A very helpful and well documented resource for those readers looking for something good to read. Divided into categories, thereis something for everyone; I used it to list more than 3 dozen possible books to explore, and I return to it from time to time asmy tastes change. There is always a book around the corner that you hadn't known about. All three of her recommended booklistsare well worth getting.

Nancy Pearl never disappoints. I've found and loved more books than I ever could have on my own, and her brief, tantalizing description of each is usually enough to send me on a search for them. I could spend the rest of my life just ignoring the bestseller lists and having a much more varied and satisfying reading life, wandering down little-known roads than those who rely on the Top Ten lists to guide their reading.

This is an outstanding collection of recommendations to fit the readers taste as well as that of the author. She does a great job of packing an enormous amount of information into a necessarily limited space. A great companion for the book lover. The book is nicely organized for browsing.

This was a nice little follow-up to Book Lust and yielded a number of recommendations. Nancy Pearl is well-read in a wide range of subjects and genres and the two Book Lust books are great companions for any lover of reading.

I would recommend this book for booklovers of all types. It offers a wide variety of books from many different genres. My wishlist grew to large proportions because of it.

Excellent reference book.

This was an okay list. I read a lot (or at least thought I did before learning of Nancy Pearl's addiction), but "there's so much to read, and so little time", that I want absolutely page-turning books, whether they be fiction or n.f. This list was inclusive of too many "meh" books, and many of the better recommendations i've already read. Even so, I'll try the first edition of Nancy Pearl's suggestions.

I bought this book when first published and have bought more copies for friends. Nancy Pearl demonstrates a broad and deep knowledge of books and has a light enjoyable writing style that heightens her readers' desire to follow her recommendations.

I bought all the Contemporary Asian Books Series and all of them were great. My primary purpose is to get new design ideas and this book delivers it well with impressive photography and good selections!

I have not received this book. I have only received the New Asian Home. Obviously I don't hate something I have not seen but this is the only way I can submit this

This is an undeniably beautiful coffee table book, which shows plenty of photos for bathroom design in Asian countries (Japan, China, Thailand, etc). If what you want is an overview demonstrating how gorgeous a bathroom can be, given an unlimited budget and (often) a lot of space, then you'll probably find this a five-star book.That wasn't what I was hoping for, however, so I'm personaly a little disappointed. First, when you can buy the finest (such as lots of marble) then it's easy to create something beautiful. For my purposes... as a new homeowner, I've been considering doing one of my bathrooms with an Asian theme. This book didn't give me much in the way of ideas for that. On the other hand, it's so pretty that I don't really mind.

Loved all the wonderful ideas. Great photos of ideas that could actually be used in a contemporary home. A worthwhile read.

This book contains many exciting designs of Asian bathrooms.Every page delights the eye and is inspirational for those looking for ideas to create a zen space.

Should have looked more closely at the publish date, this book obviously came out before American Heart Association took oils and fats into more thorough consideration as the pastry items in here, are just too loaded with butter etc.

I bought this dessert cookbook because I like desserts. But I need to watch my diet so when I started using this specialized dessert book I was in for a wonderful surprise. There is such a wide variety of choices it makes for a tough time of deciding what to make. The recipies are welll laid out and easy to follow, even for a clutz like me!I think you will enjoy it as much s I do.

My husband had a heart attack recently and I wanted recipes for desserts he could enjoy at special occasions, that the rest of the family would too. There is no scrimping of flavor in the recipes I have tried so far! And it's great for the whole family to be eating desserts that not only taste wonderful but have some added nutrition without unnecessary fats. Highly recommend!

My Mother just recently recovered from a heart attack and a quadruple bypass. She is also diabetic so this book is a great way to help her heart and sugar levels:) Definitely Recommended!

Reading this fine book on Kindle at the same time able to access baseball player info on Wikipedia and additional internet stat sites is almost as good as being at the ballpark for the grand experience. The only missing item is a video link to the game described in the book

I love baseball books--this is one of the best I've read since Keith Hernandez's classic Pure Baseball. The fan will want to think about how the game has declined since Hernandez wrote his book back in the early 90's. Money has mostly been the culprit, but Meyer shows how pitching and pitching specialists (we now have the opener thanks to the Rays), the ubiquitous strikeout (no one throws more than five innings so everyone throws 95 mph), and the home run have replaced fundamental parts of the game like base running, bunting, pitchers who throw complete games, contact hitting, and the hit and run (remember the hit and run?). The analysis of post-modern baseball in Power Ball is brilliant. I've felt that the game was dying for years now; the author shows us why this is true, but how we can still enjoy what is a pale imitation of what once was our National Pasttime.

If you love baseball, even if you just like baseball and understand the game, this is a must read. The entire book takes place during one Oakland A’s/Houston Astros game in 2017. While the action is described, one half inning per chapter, Neyer digresses into velocity, launch angles and a hundred other topics that sound dull but aren’t. I knew the use of Bill James-style sabermetics had changed the game, but I had no idea it had been taken so far.

In writing "Power Ball," author Rob Neyer has very cleverly, and very effectively, chosen to dissect the details of a single baseball game as a way of examining the state of Major League Baseball as a whole. The result is an inning-by-inning, sometimes a pitch-by-pitch,, chronicle of a game that was played late in the 2017 season between the Houston Astros and the Oakland A's. This book stands of the shoulders of Michael Lewis's iconic "Moneyball." In choosing to examine one game as a microcosm of baseball, Neyer also follows in the footsteps of Arnold Hano, who wrote "A Day In The Bleachers," and Dan Okrent, who authored "Nine Innings."This is simply one of the most engaging baseball books I have read in recent memory. The author uses specific situations in the unfolding game between the Astros and the A's to highlight significant changes in baseball: the emergence of a whole generation of power pitchers who can hurl over 100 MPH, the role of the defensive shift, the disappearance of the bunt, the changing perception of strikeouts by batters, the pace of the game, the out sized dominance of players of short stature, the new generation of super statistics, launch angle, exit velocity, etc.Having attended literally thousands of baseball games in my lifetime, and having taken in thousands more via radio and TV, I am more than a casual fan of the game, Yet each chapter of this book offered me new insights into aspects of the game I had not previously considered.If you love baseball, then this book is a MUST READ!Enjoy!

'Powerball' is a fun, detail-rich analysis of modern day baseball. What exactly that entails is a pretty random slew of thoughts and passages. Well it's not entirely random. At the center of the book is the game between the Astro's and the A's. The chapters are divided up by the innings. Visitors First, Home First, Etc. Each chapter gives a little info on what is happening in the game. This is where the author is able to break off into the different subjects encompassing the book. For example, the book may mention a play the catcher makes and continue talking about catchers for a while. This seems like an interesting premise but it felt like it wasn't the best way to go and made the book feel quite tangential. I wish it had been more straightforward with the chapters divided by subject. It's strange reading a book where the author is constantly changing subjects in a train of thought sort of way. It kind of makes it feel like there really isn't a point to the whole thing but rather just a collection of random thoughts.Having said that though, I quite enjoyed the book. If you love baseball, you'll finds lots to like here. There are countless subjects explored in this book. They range from a few paragraphs to a few pages. But don't think of this as another 'Moneyball.' You won't be recommending it to your non-baseball friends. But that's OK. It offers plenty of interesting insights into the post-Moneyball game. Particularly interesting is the thought that 'Moneyball' didn't change baseball as much as we might assume. Or at least not in the way we think. Maybe we should have gathered this based on the fact that the A's haven't exactly been rolling in the championships post-2001. Lots of things have changed over the past couple of decades though and that is all covered here. The book is bursting with interesting facts.For some reason I went into this book thinking it would be very serious. But actually it is quite lighthearted and fun. This was a bit of a relief as it can be quite boring reading someone that is too full of their own ideas. Luckily, that is not the case here. While I don't think this is a must read by any means, it's certainly entertaining while it lasts. If you're a die-hard fan it's worth picking up. If you're searching for your first baseball book, you could do better elsewhere.

I've been a baseball fan my entire life...I'm 51...And it's books like this that a true baseball fan can relate to. The details and intricacies of today's game are detailed so that not only can a serious fan appreciate the game more, but the casual fan can get a deeper understanding of why Baseball is the best sport in spite of itself.I would recommend this book to all levels of fans. I look forward to next season after having read this book. This book proves that there is always another level to this sport...it's constantly evolving, yet in so many ways it still the same game that I loved when I was a kid.

Probably not breaking news but any content that Rob Neyer creates is essential to digest if you're a fan of baseball. In "Power Ball" we get his master work, a wonderfully written survey of the game today.

Not a great map for trying to find streets. Not a real grid to look things up. Very small print also and it would be nice to have a larger metro map. Wish someone would make more maps like the penguin map guided by Michael Middleditch. His map guides for Paris, London and Amsterdam are fabulous. Don't know why other cities don't have similar maps.

A convenient sturdy map. Out of necessity the print is very small, which makes it tough for me, but if you need a map, I think this is a good one.

Having staggered through the 1940s, however, the company retained its fanatically loyal clientele in the cities while formidable new rivals (Big Boy, Gino's, Hardee's, Howard Johnson, McDonald's, et al.) preempted fast-growing suburban markets. This book is very well researched, informative, and an interesting read. I loved reading how White Castle evolved over the years. A lot of hard work went into this book and it's well worth your time. It is the definitive history of how the fast-food industry began. It also alludes to other fast-food chains & the markets in which they competed for the consumer dollar, particularly against White Castle.

Still reading this book but so far is very good.

SELLING `EM BY THE SACK can be perceived and read for any one or more of several reasons. As an informal textbook on business management, or maybe marketing. As a social commentary on the rise of fast food, or possibly what defines America to the rest of the world. Or, as just a history of the hamburger from a culinary standpoint.The author, David Hogan, effectively makes the case that White Castle and its founders, Billy Ingram and Walt Anderson (especially the former), were the originators of the fast food "carryout" concept, and that they established the humble hamburger as the distinctive ethnic cuisine of the USA. The evolutionary history of White Castle from the early part of the 20th century to the present is described, from its founding in Wichita in 1921, through the Depression and two wars (W.W.II and Korea), to the era of the big chains (like McDonald's and Burger King), which, miraculously, have not brought about its demise. Along the way, Billy Ingram and his successors have successfully coped with an endless series of challenges, the first of which was to make the hamburger perceived as a sanitary and healthy food at all. Then came standardization of the product, national expansion, gaining credibility with and acceptance from the middle class, coping with war rationing, the hiring of women, surviving the rise of the superchains, adapting to suburbanization of the cities, defending against rising urban crime, facing increasing government regulations, and answering the health-conscious critics' attacks on the fast food lifestyle.Today, White Castle survives as a barely medium-sized chain in the north-central and northeast regions of the United States. It has kept alive the guiding principles of its founders, has acquired a fanatical following, and remains profitable at a time when even larger chains, like Burger Chef and White Tower, have since disappeared from the American landscape.SELLING `EM BY THE SACK is not a "thriller", offers no high drama, is written with no humor whatsoever, and is actually a little dry. Had it been about a brand of toothpaste or bread, I wouldn't have bothered. But, it's about hamburgers. (Oddly enough, cheeseburgers are never mentioned in any context.) So, I read it, was entertained, and learned a lot.I've never eaten a White Castle. Where I live, in Southern California, the brand is represented only by its frozen burgers that one can buy in the supermarkets. I've seen them in packages of a dozen. They seem ridiculously small when compared with McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Jack-In-the-Box, Carl's, or In-`n'-Out. I think I'll buy a "sack".

This is a straightforward history of the "White Castle System." It won't win any awards for writing style. But Dr. Hogan knows his subject and to Castle fans the subject doesn't need any trimmings. Consider this the definitive book on the oldest extant fast food chain and sheds an interesting point of view on broad historical events the company manages to survive including the depression, WWII (when substitutes for ration-constrained hamburgers included: baked beans, fried egg sandwiches, spaghetti, and 'cod cakes'), and the post-war rise of the suburbs. This is not a book on food and barely a book on business -- put it in the history section.

This is a great book. It very nicely documents the rise of the hamburger and White Castle in 1920's America. Hogan follows White Castle through the early times, when a man could work there and make enough to support a family, through the depression, the rough war years, and more recent competition with the fast food giants. I'm not sure why he waited until the last two pages to tell readers what makes White Castle special and has enabled it to persist for so long....but this is a minor complaint. Excellent!
