Review

"The narrative feels ripped from the headlines, a contemporary cautionary tale with enough wrinkles to make all four boys seem like likely suspects... Kate's efforts to solve the case highlight the duality of the human soul, the ways technology can twist the truth, and the difficulty of knowing who to trust."―Publishers Weekly"Absorbing, haunting, and memorable.... a slow-burning mystery/love story that ratchets up the tension with each chapter. By the time you reach the end you will be breathless!"―Colleen Houck, New York Times best-selling author of Tiger's Curse "Elston spins out a solid mystery... She sustains a high level of tension. For teens who enjoy watching the heedless-but-good girl take on a crew of privileged bad boys to exonerate her guy, this is their story."―BCCB"Intrigue and suspense, drugs and partying, social media, budding romance, mounting clues, and characters who embody good and bad--some evil--make this incredibly crafted novel impossible to set aside. It is a stellar summer reading or book discussion group choice... This novel will circulate among all readers."―VOYA"The characters are believable and well developed in this stimulating and intriguing plot. This mesmerizing romantic mystery is bursting with plot twists and turns that will leave the reader highly satisfied and wishing they had not yet finished the book."―School Library Council, starred review"The plot build cleverly, interspersed with text messages, mistaken identities, whiffs of political corruption, and mysterious narrations from someone who knows what happened... impossible to put down."―Booklist"Chilling and suspenseful, with just the right number of twists."―Kirkus

This book started off strong, lost steam in the middle, and landed flat on its face at the end. The only thing that kept me reading to the end was my curiosity; I wanted to know who the killer was. The things that bothered me might seem insignificant, but they prevented me from becoming fully absorbed.I never felt like I had a clear picture of Kate, and I don't just mean what she looks like. I know what she likes to do for fun... but I don't really know who she is. That made it very hard for me to connect with her. It was frustrating because I know Elston had it in her to write a fully fleshed-out character; I have a very clear picture of each of the River Point Boys.I really didn't like the way Elston wrote the adult characters. It turns me off when parents are written in a way that makes it obvious the author didn't want them to be part of the story but couldn't think of a plausible reason to completely leave them out. That, to me, is lazy. Kate's mom is present throughout but never really *there*. She's always taking a smoke break, stuck working late, and tossing her car keys at Kate so Kate can drive around and get caught spying on people. Mr. Stone, on the other hand, was very much a part of the story. And he was interesting and likeable until he did something that was out of character and clearly just meant to service the plot. Another turnoff. Then there's the ending. The killer wasn't who I thought it was... but the reveal wasn't that exciting. But perhaps that's mostly because I just didn't care at that point and wanted to be done with the book so I could start a new one.One thing I really liked about this book: dual perspective. Most of the story is told from Kate's point of view, but there are short sections told from the killer's perspective. It really added interest to the story and kept me reading even when I was feeling bored by Kate. This book was an entertaining quick read, but I'm not rushing to recommend it to anyone.

It took me only two days to finish this book, working a full time job, and still coming home to make dinner and spend time with my loved ones.. That’s how good it was. This cover of this novel is what captivated me at first (let’s be honest, we all judge a book by it’s cover) well this one is gorgeous. I’m so glad i made the purchase, this novel captivated me from the very first page until the very last page. The story begins with a narration of what takes place out in the woods, on a Sunday morning while five friends go out shooting in the woods, which is normal of them to do. Only this time, only four came back, Grant Perkins what shot by one of his own friends, was it intentional or was it an accident? The novel takes us through many different theories and possible scenarios, and we get to know the friends..Through the narration of Kate who works for the DA’s office, the same one who happens to have Grants case, so Kate happens to have a direct insight on the happenings of this case.We also learn that Kate is close to one of the boys, but she soon discovers truths that change everything. She learns how essential she is to this case, little does she know what a big part she will play in finding the answers that everyone is desperate to have. There were plot twists that had me in shock, and I loved that!Only one of the boys knows the truth, but why keep it hidden, because it was an accident and he is scared that he will face murder charges regardless, or because it was absolutely intentional and he does;t want to go down where there’s three other boys that this can be pinned on?In this novel we learn hard truths, and I can assure you that this novel will keep you wanting justice, answers and to know what really happened on that Sunday morning, when the town was shook with a death and became divided. It’s a worthwhile read, with a gorgeous cover! Read it, check it out from the library, download it on your reader.. whatever the method, get your hands on this book! ❤️Ellie RG

What I Thought...• I could not put down This Is Our Story. It had me from the get go and wouldn't let go of it's hold on me.• I love the way the story was told. There were chapter's from Kate's POV and also interludes from the killer's POV, only we don't know who it is.• Nothing is as it seems. There are five boys in the group, one of them is killed and the other four agree to this pact to "protect" themselves. It's absolutely crazy, but I could totally see this being a real story.• Kate was pretty awesome. I loved her job in the courthouse and that she was fiercer than I thought she would be.• There were quite a few plots twists. Some I saw coming, some I didn't. It was really hard to know what was true and what was a lie.• Belle Terre is a small town and I loved the mix of small town politics combined with rich people politics. It added another delicious element to the story.• I was pleasantly surprised that there was a little romance in Belle Terre. I picked up This Is Our Story because of how intriguing the mystery was, and given that half the characters are suspects to a murder I just assumed no romance.• Kate's BFF Reagan was the kind of best friend everyone should have in high school. She calls it like it is, but is also supportive.Overall you should read This Is Our Story. Now. Seriously. The mystery has so many twists and turns - you won't regret it.

“Diane Ackerman’s vivid writing, inexhaustible stock of insights, and unquenchable optimism have established her as a national treasure, and as one of our great authors. If you’ve read any of her previous books, you already know why you’ll love this latest one. If you haven’t read her previous books, you’re now about to become addicted to Diane Ackerman.” - Jared Diamond, professor of geography at UCLA and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse“Splendidly prismatic…[N]early every page holds surprises.” - Andrew C. Revkin, New York Times“Ackerman is a gorgeous writer and perceptive observer.” - Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe“Ferociously inspiring.” - Alan Moores, Seattle Times“Amazingly illuminating…Ackerman reaches into the past to understand and explain our future…with her typically intoxicating blend of scholarship, wisdom, grace, and humor.” - Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies“Ackerman has established herself over the last quarter of a century as one of our most adventurous, charismatic and engrossing public science writers…[S]he has demonstrated a rare versatility, a contagious curiosity and a gift for painting quick, memorable tableaus drawn from research across a panoply of disciplines…The Human Age is a dazzling achievement: immensely readable, lively, polymathic, audacious.” - Rob Nixon, New York Times Book Review“Fascinating…Ackerman offers a cross-cultural tour of human ingenuity…Her words invite us to feel the hope she feels.” - Barbara J. King, Washington Post“What a hopeful book! We can feel many things at the start of the Anthropocene, this new geological age that we have brought on―or brought down on ourselves. Diane Ackerman, for one, is optimistic, even cheerful, singing the praises of those individuals among us who are helping to find the way forward. And she writes with brilliance, zest, and high style. We need to hear this voice of human affirmation. It’s important. It matters. I read The Human Age and thought, Yes! This is the way to look ahead.” - Jonathan Weiner, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Beak of the Finch and Long for this World“With graceful intelligence, Ackerman calls for an enlightened guardianship for the planet. I cannot imagine a richer text of image and insight.” - Terry Tempest Williams, author of When Women Were Birds“A humdinger of a book…Ackerman is optimistic, even exhilarated, and frequently giddy about the future of humanity.” - Jon Christensen, San Francisco Chronicle

While this book purports to be about 'the ways that humans are working with nature to try to save the planet,' a more realistic description of the contents of this book might read, 'speculation about the outcomes of very preliminary research and projects that would help humans work with nature to save the planet.' That isn't to say that I didn't get a lot out of this book; it's just more science-fictional nonfiction than it is concrete nonfiction. Ackerman definitely starts from projects that are going on right now, but the majority of the book is her speculation about how those projects and findings could go forward, and what they could mean. This book was beautifully written, but if you're looking for just what's going on right now and nothing else, this may not be the right book for you, as it was not for me. I'm giving it four stars because it is well-written, even if I misjudged what it was about.

The book should be read slowly and as a series of short vignettes or short essays instead of a conventional book. The ideas are worth reflecting on at a leisurely pace. The writing at times was quite beautiful with wonderful descriptions and lush images. The book presents some important ideas and probably merits another star but I was alittle turned off by a certain repetition of Ms. Ackerman's world view of the human impact on our planet. I probably should have read it more slowly than I did. I suggest you read it and savor it.

In line with a growing number of scientists, the author argues that humans are changing the earth on a scale too grand to underestimate. The breadth of her argument is encyclopedic. A wake up call by a naturalist who knows her science but never forgets her humanity. Written in accessible and engaging language. She obviously loves her work and imparts her excitement to the reader.

I love Diane Ackerman and the way she skates on the clouds giving us the most supreme overview of the world we have created so far as well as the world we are creating bit by bit in every corner. I love the poetic way she points out how we have trampled our mother and all the people she finds that are making miracles, both large and small, that are curing the ills we have created. This is an honest look at this new world, how we got here and the myriad ways we are making it better. She holds the most optimistic view of the mess we have made and how we will find our way back into our mother's good graces. I hope she's right!

Diane Ackerman has a way with descriptive adjectives that enlivens her writing. But the real pleasure in this book lies in her broad scope of examining the age we live in. She has a strong command of the major impacts that humans have had on the earth and its inhabitants, from climate change to 3D printing to artificial intelligence to nano-engineering to biology. This is an important and deeply satisfying survey that will surprise and enlighten and entertain. Read it!

As usual, Diane Ackerman has written a book that is informative, easy to read and a keeper. She offers us hope and gives examples of how people around the world are working to save our planet. Unfortunately, we in North American have to search to find this kind of information, when in fact, it should be a daily news item. We need hope and courage to face and deal with the new age that is certainly here. Well done Ms. Ackerman.

Great writing, lyrical and carefully worded prose. I like her realistic approach. We have changed the world a lot. When we acknowledge mistakes, we can make changes and 'recycle' them in positive ways. We are on a never-ending learning curve that is part and parcel on being human. As much as fellow creatures share some of basic human attributes, humans are unique and only we have the ability and responsibility to set a direction.

i'm a diane devotee and this book does not disappoint! her imaginative adjectives poetically lead the reader down an adventurous path of learning. Lyrical metaphors paint a brilliant picture of life in the anthropocene era, The Human Age. Covering topics from nanotechnology, biomimicry, vertical gardening this tome is cause for deliberation and encourages hope in our future through the thoughtful management of technology.

Mary Berry does not assume that I know the best way to assemble and cut my tea sandwiches and that's what I really enjoyed about this book. It was like having an aunt who says, "by the way..." She discusses all kinds of things like Harissa and acorn fed pigs. Loved it!

This is a really useful cookery book packed with delicious recipes for all occasions. The directions are clear and really foolproof and all the extra tips and ingredient explanations most useful. I have many cookery books but this one is a joy to cook from.

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to upgrade their culinary skills. Mary describes steps clearly and gives all the needed information to complete the recipe successfully. There is much, much, much valuable information in her "Kitchen Wisdom" section. Well worth the price.

You can't go wrong with Mary. Brilliant, easy and delicious.

Great book by a great lady

Considering the "must have" ingredients discussed at the beginning -- I mean, anchovies! capers!! -- I'm a bit put off. However, it's a beautiful book and I'm sure I'll find a whole lot that I can work with very happily.

Unfortunately the print is too small and overuse of color print on coloured background made it difficult to read recipes. I am not happy with the book

Lovely book clearly and concisely written .I am English so love Mary Berry .
