But even before a prototype of the Sonic Cruiser takes to the skies, tens of thousands of hours will have been spent on design, planning, testing, legal, administrative, and other tasks.The product development scenario for information technology and information security is radically different. Corporate networks are being rolled out with planning and design that is not on par with that of our counterparts in the aviation and construction industries. In fact, already complex corporate networks are continuously becoming more byzantine. Take an average MIS department and add up all their hardware vendors, network topologies and protocols, operating systems, software add-ons, and custom-written applications. Now try to securely integrate them. If security was not designed into the original system architecture, how can these security products be expected to work? Despite the fact that companies are spending more and more money on information systems security, the systems are growing more and more complex -- and complex systems are much harder to protect.Security Architecture: Design, Deployment and Operations, is intended to help readers design and deploy better security technologies. The authors believe that security architecture must be comprehensive, because a network that is 98% secure is actually 100% insecure. This is especially true, given that -- contrary to popular belief -- information security is not a pure science, but a mixture of art and science.Effective information security must encompass every aspect of the enterprise. Security Architecture shows how to design a secure infrastructure. It addresses all of the major security products and provides details on how to deploy them.The authors incisively write that it is not enough for security professionals to understand the theory behind information security; unless they are able to insert security controls in the proper places within an application (data flows, storage and processing), the security solution will not be effective. A security product that is implemented incorrectly is like medicine that is taken improperly: great in potential, but futile in reality.In addition, if the inserted security solution is not managed with the proper processes in place (e.g., change management, separation of duties, notification, and escalation), the level of security provided will degrade with time until the control becomes ineffective.The book covers all of the fundamentals of information security. Particularly noteworthy is Chapter 3, "Information Classification and Access Control Plan." As companies place more of their corporate data jewels on often-untrusted public networks, the lack of an information classification scheme can have significant negative security consequences. Also, access control is critical in that many organizations -- and even the media -- are busy obsessing about remote hackers from foreign countries and have become oblivious to the real threats to information security: insiders. While it is much more romantic to think about foreigners hacking into your system in the middle of the night, the reality is that most breaches occur via insiders during normal business hours.The authors of Security Architecture discuss the elements needed to design and deploy effective information security architecture. Critical security products such as PKI, firewalls, VPN, IDS, and others are discussed, but cryptographic accelerators are not mentioned.This book highlights best practices and security standards and guidelines for effectively securing an enterprise. The book is well organized and easy to read. Many chapters have additional references and URL's for further research.The inclusion of numerous case studies, combined with the authors' real-world experience, makes Security Architecture a valuable reference. No one would ever want to get on a plane that had not been properly designed and tested. Neither should we want to use networks that have not been adequately designed and tested from a security standpoint. Security Architecture is intended to make sure that doesn't happen.

The first 5 chapters are really about Security Architecture. The rest of the book has a more technical angle. The author totally, in my view, gets lost in words like: Requirements, Services and Controls. He uses these words sometimes at random. Since these definitions are crucial to a good and understandable built-up of any ICT architecture, the reader might get lost.Under design guidelines he talks about the services offered by the a team: Authentication, Authorizaton...etc. etc. Part of those services are Logical Access Controls which he calls "these controls". Under Technical Security Requirements we focus on controls that....The main focus of technical security controls is to protect C.A.I, which are at the same time technical security requirements. At the same time: Controls are designed to gover the following actions: again we find confidentiality, integrity..etc.All are requirements, actions, controls and services. Not clear enough in my opinion.The technical part is good.

While this book didn't light a raging intellectual fire within my gray matter it certainly was a well-crafted and thorough explanation of various security techniques. And although I found some of the chapters a bit bloated and at times confusing the price of the volume was completely justified on the basis of Chapter 12 alone. "PKI: Components and Applications" was by far the most clear and concise treatise I have ever encountered during my months of research covering PKI -- a challenging and almost arcane security method. With envious ease the author managed to delineate complicated and intricate methodolgies using a common-sense approach that's a pleasurable derivation from standard computer book narrative.If you are interested in learning about PKI I suggest no better a place to start or end than "Security Architecture: Design, Deployment and Operations".

I have gotten sucked into reading more than one book that was supposedly comparable to the incomparable Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. I have decided, however, that a wacky heroine with crazy situations doesn't always make her an equal to Stephanie, who is one of my very favorite book characters. When I saw, though, that Queen Janet had written an endorsement of Gretchen Archer's Davis Way books, I decided that it was worthy of a read, and I'm so glad I did. Davis Way is a Southern girl and former cop who gets a job working security at the Belissimo casino in Biloxi. An offshoot of this job is being a body double for the casino owner's spoiled brat of a wife. Davis is surrounded with a great cast of supporting characters, who have made me laugh out loud. A lot. Which is my acid test for a comparison to Stephanie. I have read all the books in this series, and they get better & better. And you learn something as well about the gaming industry and cop stuff. Archer obviously has done her research. Looking forward to the next Davis book, and I think you will enjoy this series!

Gretchen Archer has become my favorite "cozy mystery" author, and I read a LOT. I've read her Davis Way Crime Caper series up through her 5th book Double Knot, and I'm anxiously awaiting Double Up, due out in March 2017. if you are looking for a series that will knock your socks off you are in the right place! Seriously, her books are like crack to me. Davis Way is a hilarious laugh-out-loud heroine who kicks ass and takes names. The witty dialogue is in a class by itself, the characters such unique individuals, and the mystery is not one that you will figure out during the first half of the book -- I promise! My sister and I were on vacation together and I loaned her my Kindle as I was going to bed early one night -- I heard her laughing well into the night and I knew another fan had been born... Long live Davis Way!

First it was Janet Evanovich, then Laura Levine. More recently Barbara Allan. And now Gretchen Archer has joined my very special list of authors to whom I owe an unpayable, incalculable debt of gratitude for being 100% GUARANTEED to make me laugh, whether times are dreadful, fabulous, or anywhere in between. Double Whammy is not only funny, but over-the-top clever, and a terrific plot. Charmed one minute, howling with laughter the next, and deeply touched the minute after that. Repeat!It's that good. Give it a try. Have some laughs and enjoy the cleverness. Fall in love with Davis Way.It's a fun ride.And hey, are those pineapple recipes?

I'm having a hard time rating this one, somewhere between a 3 1/2 and 4 star. What bothered me was the flashbacks and too many extra stories, it got a little overwhelming at times. Also when Davis was in the Pokey, I had a hard time with a few things there, I don't want to say what to avoid spoilers, but I found it a bit too much. Now what I did like was Davis is a jump in there kind of woman. She gets a job in security to figure out slot machines jackpotting too often. She is also sent to other areas to figure out problems (the extra stories that I mentioned). They were interesting and entertaining but a bit much with the main story going on. I will say that this book is non stop, and keeps you guessing to what is going to happen next, because a few things I just didn't see coming. I had quite a few laughs while reading, her father seems to be the most stable character, and I loved George the cab driver. I will continue on with this series and hope that it tones down just a little, to concentrate on the main story, this was a fun read and different from the usual cozies I read.

Davis Way has the most unbelieveable life. That being said, most of it was very believeable. This is a story that needs to be read by anyone who likes action and great characters. There are so many disguises and changes for Davis I had a hard time keeping up and loved trying to guess which character she would be next. Bradley was a surprise. I had a harder time with the reality of his reaction to everything from Davis, her predicament and her use of the apartment she leased from him. By the time he came in though, I was ready to see someone wearing a white hat.Great book. I'm on to getting the next book in the series!

I loved this book! Gretchen Archer has created a character I want to hang out with often. Davis Way is witty and smart, and while she's gotten herself into trouble rather spectacularly, Archer does an excellent job of showing us the layers of the character and what makes her tick.The casino setting is well drawn and interesting, and Archer weaves it into the story well so that the plot moves along at a fast clip.I'm eagerly awaiting the next Davis Way mystery

It was a disjointed story line in the beginning. And is often the case with mystery writers, the gun references and characteristics were off the mark. I just wish authors would consult gun people before eluding to a Glock safety not being on, when in fact they have no safeties as such. And no prison guard would be carrying a puny Sig P238 in .380 caliber. Just saying......

Excellent! Fast paced, a nicely twisting plot-line, and LOL fun! I promised myself I wasn't buying any more books until I get through some of my backlog, but by the time I'd reached the midway point of the third chapter from the sample, I'd bought not only this book but the entire series. (Sigh.) I just hope Gretchen doesn't come out with a new series for a while. (Kidding. If she does, I suspect I'll be buying them as fast as she can write them, too.)

My wife and I used the book to go on three hikes during our recent stay in Santa Fe. The book was informative and helped us make selection of the hikes we took.

We have already done almost half of the hikes in this book and they are all really nice and well described.

This is an extremely small book - about 4x7 inches, 97 pages To be honest, if I had seen it in a store (rather than on-line) I would have rejected it as overpriced. It describes 24 hikes. Since I am not native to the area, I don't know if they are the "best" in the area, but I'm sure many others were omitted in the interest of brevity.We purchased the book from Amazon in preparation for a week-long trip to the area in July. The contents are useful, but limited. Directions to trail heads, maps and text for finding your way along the trail vary in quality and are quite brief. The maps are small and do not have topo lines. One useful aspect of the book is seasonal and terrain advice, which seemed to be quite accurate. The geographical range of the book extends in a radius about 50 miles from Santa Fe, but does not cover Taos or ABQ.

He pioneered a whole area of psychology focussed on willpower and self control. He has a NY Times bestseller entitled Willpower. Self control is a primary predictor of success, health, happiness, incarceration, effectiveness, etc.This book on evil is built on Baumeister’s work on self control. Those that claim the book makes unsubstantiated claims failed to look at the bibliography and source material this foremost academic psychologist brings to bear on the subject of evil. Tje idea that evil is caused by a failure of self control is nuanced, actionable, and supported widely in studies on the subject (eg, such as the Stanford Prison study).I have had contact with evil in my life, and there is a scale as discussed in the book. The book is an effective look into the causes of evil actors in our world. If we betternunderstood these ideas, perhaps we could do a better job at identifying them to stop some of their harm. For example, the root causes of most gun violence in the US is explained in this book.

Instead of making metaphysical claims as to the causes of evil, Dr. Baumeister instead suggests that we know evil by the validity of the claims of victims, which he isn't shy of saying are designed to distort reality, for a variety of reasons, but still have merit as such. He highlights four Root Causes of evil, which any reader would recognize from a cursory glance of history or contemporary politics and the motivations of leaders and politicians who we imagine have wronged us in some way, or those idealistic ideologues who would if only their bad ideas were enacted as policy.

This book has helped me expand my understanding of how people commit and rationalize violent / harmful acts. The darker part is turning it in on my own misdeeds in life and figuring what my thought processes were at the time.

I liked the book so much I bought it again when someone borrowed it and didn't return. I first read the book several years ago, but is timely reading now.

I picked up this book thinking it would be a study of serial killers or something. I was happily surprised to find a well written book about the myth of evil. Baumiester does a good job of introducing difficult concepts that challenge our belief systems. One particularly interesting facet of his theory is the "perception gap" between the victims of evil and the perpetrators of evil. Baumiester uses both scientific research and real-life examples (O.J., Sadaam Hussien, Bosnia) to illustrate his points, making the information very accessible. As a writer, I found the information on what causes people to commit evil actions fascinating and helpful in creating fictional characters with dimension. As a someone who works in the prevention field, I applied his theory about egotism and violence to school bullies. This book is a must read for writers, teachers, law enforcement, prevention specialist, counselors and so forth. This book will definately make you think.

The laboratory manual is what you would expect. The language can sometimes be confusing, making the procedures hard to follow, but the introduction to the lab is often very help and allows you recall formulas and knowledge from reading the chapters in your text book. A lot of the problems are better worded than in the previous 9th edition as well. This makes it easier to understand what the book is asking. However, sometimes some questions are just to vague and yahoo answers will be a great resource if you cannot find what exactly is being asked. Overall, a better chemistry manual than I have dealt with before, but still has its shortcomings. The reference appendix is by far the most helpful resource.

Do not make my poor mistake and buy a used lab manual. Coming from a low income family with just enough scholarships to cover everything but books, hear me out. The lab pages you need to actually record your answers, won't be there. All you have is lab procedures. I basically bought a $100 used lab manual that just tells me what to do and I have no way of seeing the questions or recording my answers, and I have no idea what to do. Don't be me. Be smart!

It's ok. I used this for my Gen. Chem class. The set up is ok, it does explain how to set up the experiment. Homework and calculation part was kind of tricky. Kind of pricey, but no matter what the reviews are, we know these kinds of books are mandatory for the lab class.

My daughter is using this book this semester and has found pages missing. She is having to get copies of the book from a friend. Very disappointed!!

I made the mistake of throwing down $62 for the Kindle version on this book, and now I am going to have to pay for the actual book. The reason is that you cannot print, or even cut and paste, any of the lab sheets for the experiments. Since Chem professors actually want you to turn in the assignments, this means that there is no way for you to do the experiments in this book, if you have the Kindle version.

It costs me $107 to buy it NEW just so I can receive it with missing pages.. I noticed 2 experiemnts so far because we went through them in lab, really it jumped from page n. 62 to page 65. and so for the other one.. This is unexceptionable.

DO NOT RENT VIA KINDLE!!!! You cannot print pages making this lab manual essentially worthless!!

Because of this, I recommend getting one of the various DVD instructional sets for "The Expert at the Card Table."I still need to watch my DVD set, but I wanted to read the book first. It's easy to get through if you don't worry too much about visualizing the moves exactly. Get a general idea of what he's describing, and what each move does, and remind yourself that you'll be able to see them in action when you watch video instruction.Just having that basic understanding of what was possible, of what the various slights could produce, keep me interested. I mean, I know how Three Card Monte works now, and why it's so tough to beat!If you want to learn card magic, at some point, you will need to study Erdnase.

This edition contains the classic, original text, improved with larger pictures, while maintaining the first edition's pagebreaks. Add to this a comprehensive index, and what's not to love? An indispensable reference for any card worker, and as valuable today as ever!

My 14 year-old grandson is fascinated by slight of hand and card tricks. He's gotten quite good at it, but I thought this book might help him get even better. He devoured the book after receiving it for Christmas and his skills have already really improved.

What can you say about this book that hasn't been said 100 times before? In just 130 short pages (under half of which are specifically devoted to magic), S. W. Erdnase redefined card magic. I am very much an amateur, but am familiar enough to recognize nearly everything in the book, including some entire routines (Ricky Jay, for instance, does a version of "The Exclusive Coterie" in which he recites the pages-long patter from this book word for word). Further starting to practice some of the many moves presented in the book has revealed their beauty and potential.The book is divided into two sections, "Card table artifice", dealing with cheating at draw poker (false shuffles, false cuts, bottom dealing, palming, etc.) , and "Legerdemain", dealing with card magic. The entire book is written in a very engaging and amusing style, and although describing complex hand movements in words is notoriously difficult, it is fairly easy to follow the instructions for the various moves described, with the aid of the provided drawings. And the moves are many. A performer could easily make a career strictly by mastering the slights contained in this gem.It is hard to pick favorites from everything described in this book, but I wanted to try. The "Mexican Three Card Monte" move is one of my favorites, because it is so simple (you can master it in about 5 minutes), yet looks so smooth and is very hard to detect. Probably overall, my favorite move I have ever seen is described in this book -- the "Diagonal Palm-Shift". It is hard to put into words how elegant this move is; when I first saw a video clip of Dai Vernon performing it, I rewatched the same 5 seconds about 20 times in a row, because it is so amazing and unbelievable to see.Anyway, this book is a classic, and remains useful today, more than 100 years after its publication. It is great. Really great.

Beautiful book, but extremely hard for me to master. I have small hands and I am a bit clumsy, but it gives me something to shoot for and to try to master anyway.

This is it. There is a reason it has been in print since 1902. Yes, it does talk about cheating at cards but the same moves are the basic staples of card magic. Don't think this is an introductory textbook though. It's graduate level work. (For an intro level book for a good price, go get Royal Road to Card Magic by Hugard and Braue.) Pay close attention to every single word, and study the somewhat difficult to understand drawings.Take a few years to digest and practice. And, if you are serious, go find yourself a good teacher.

The Expert at the Card Table - Classic Treatise on Card Manipulation by S.W. Erdnase - has been hailed at the Bible for Close-up Card Magicians and Gamblers alike. For the longest time I was strictly using The Royal Road to Card Magic DVD Set taught by R. Paul Wilson, along with the book Expert Card Technique. Both of those were great learning tools, but I was very exciting when I purchased a Hardcover copy of Expert at the Card Table for a reasonable price. The book has a nice medium, dark wooden color to it with just regular black letters for the title of the book. My copy has a scratch down the back, but it isn't noticeable while looking at it, only when you run your hand down the back of the book.Now even though a majority of these sleights and some effects are out-dated, but if it were not for these specific sleights and card routines, then we wouldn't have nearly as many creative Magicians who really pour their heart and soul into their work. Which is the exact same feeling that I get whenever I am reading Expert at the Card Table, and there have been a few occasions when the author refers to himself as "we" so it could very well be more than just one person writing such a revolutionary book on cards. So I highly suggest any Magicians, Gambler or just the curious to pick up a copy because you're bound to find a sleight/trick/etc that will fit your own personal routine, perfectly.

The book's illustrations are a bit dated, but for what the book is, it's fine.
