As a former student of his at Rutgers, I found that the opening paragraph brought me back to classroom and reminded me of his inimitable style: Fast paced, logical, emotional, deeply involved, colorful, and thought provoking. I disagreed with his politics but loved and respected him as a man and as a professional. Too bad more of you never had a chance to be his student.

This book is a classic when it comes to slave master relationships in the American South. I read this book when I was in college. I still have it in my library and go to it every now and then for reference.

Geovese's account of American slavery encompasses many aspects of daily life, and is praiseworthy for its attempt to establish the agency of enslaved individuals in shaping their own identity within the confines of their social condition. In particular, I appreciated the chapter on selecting names. However, despite being a work of ground-braking scholarship, Genovese's work remains limited. Although, Genevese pays attention to the variety and variances in slave life, too often his history seems to be floating without anchor in time and place, as if the condition of slavery was consistent and unchanged through its existence in America and in all regions. Likewise, his interpretation is focused through the lens of paternalism, which limits the motivations of both the slaves and slave owner's actions.

This is one of the most important works on the subject of slavery. I think that understanding the culture of the United States at the time of the civil war is necessary to understand the culture of violence at the present time.

This book is a very good resource for my research about the Church of Christ. Book is in very good condition and was sent in a timely manner. Excellent seller.

Known as a classic in the genre, "Roll, Jordan, Roll" is a comprehensive examination of life in the slave south. Unlike other books of its type, Genovese explores both the slave and the slave owner's life and culture. The book extensively documents rare sources recording the views of the white slave owning culture.Though comprehensive, at times "Roll, Jordan, Roll" seems to minimize the horrors of slavery by under-representing many of the powerful slave narratives and by over-representing quotations from slave owners. Genovese is best in his discussion of the religion of slaves. The use of more firsthand accounts from the enslaved Christians themselves would have been helpful to readers.Over three decades old now, there are many books available which provide a complete presentation of both sides in the slavery experience. First, readers would benefit greatly from primary source books on the topic. I have been reading on this book for a very long time. It has worked well for me to read a few pages daily. I suggest this if you want to stay with the project. It is a readable, fascinating book, first published in 1678. This version has been updated and made more easily read, and it takes away nothing from the narrative. Christian leaves his family and the City of Destruction in search of Mt Zion and glory. Wow, he has a HARD time but he makes it. Christian's wife, children and a companion decide to follow him. This has been a long struggle for me too. I am so gladto get most of the travelers to their destination and I to mine----The End.

I love this book, it is a classic and well worth the read whether you consider yourself a "christian" or not, so when I saw this version for 99¢, including the audio narration, I was thrilled and purchased it right away. Then I started to read it, in the prologue there is a note from some priest who has taken it upon himself to pare down the book by removing all of the "sermons" that he believes slow the story down. While that is fine for some people who may prefer this pared down version, it should be advertised up front as "abridged", which it is not. Had I known I was getting a much less meaningful version of the book, I would never have purchased it, which is why I rated it as 1 star.

Pilgrim's Progress is a classic that is just as powerful today as it was when it was first written in 1678. If you are like me though, you have struggled with the reading of this beloved book. The way we speak now has changed a lot through the years and sometimes picking up a book from a different time period can be challenging to read.I am excited to tell you about the new publication of Pilgrim's Progress. It is updated, in Modern English, but still has the original illustrations. This made such a huge difference for me. What an enjoyable read it was! I did find myself, especially at the beginning, comparing it to the original text. I wanted to see for myself how much it was changed and amazingly, very little. It's tweaked just enough to make it easy to read for today's readers.Another very unique feature about this new publication is the Bible verses that are added to the text. I'm not talking about just a Bible reference either. Entire verses including where they are found in the Bible are throughout the whole book. For example:In my dream, I saw a man clothed with rags standing in a certain place, with his face turned from his own house. In his hand he held a book, and he bore a great burden upon his back. (For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. -Psalm 38:4)This was such an amazing aspect for me. It enriched the reading in such a spiritual way. I applaud whoever came up with the idea to do this. I'm sure it took a lot of work and study, but it was well worth it.Pilgrim's Progress is not a quick read. It is something to be savored. To be meditated upon. I found myself reading some of the lines/paragraphs more than once. Then I would sit and close my eyes and think on it. If you allow it, it can speak volumes to your heart. What an encouragement for the Child of God! I would highly recommend reading this account of Pilgrim's Progress and feel your life will be enriched deeply in doing so.***This book was provided to me by Aneko Press in exchange for my honest review.

This is a great story with a picture on every page! It is an allegorical story following the character named Christian. Christian meets lots of people along his way to try to get rid of the burden on his back representing his sin. He cannot remove the burden on his own. Some people lead him astray and some people point him back to the right path towards Jesus and Salvation. Christian eventually reaches the cross and gives his life to Jesus. Jesus forgives his sins and the burden falls off his back into a bottomless pit and he is made new with a new identity in Christ! That is only the beginning of the story however and Christian goes on to learn what it means to live a life for God. He also eventually equips himself with the armor of God. It's a great story and one I recommend to every parent with young children! When my mother read this to me at 4 years old I gave my heart to Jesus. When Christian reached the cross I told my mom, "Mommy I want to give my burden to jesus too!" I pray this story will continue to share the gospel with many more people for years to come!

This is one of the better versions of the Pilgrim's Progress. The version is written in clear modern language. The Bible Verses are conveniently located so one can easily read and compare them to the way John Bunyan uses them in the story. (The Bible verses are actually written out not just marked) I have several versions of the Pilgrim's Progress, so I have read this story over and over many times. I would highly recommend this version and the one written by Barry Horner. Both of the books have their advantages. If you have read this story before and you really didn't get anything out of it, I would suggest you buying this version and trying it again. I have gained different insights with each and every reading.

I had high hopes for this book, and it exceeded my expectations even more. The stories and one-liners in this book...you could build your business on it. I highly recommend this book! One of the most impressive books I've read in a while.

I appreciate Mr. Schulze’s emphasis on being a servant leader. He has obviously been successful, and in this book he shares his secrets of delivering excellence. He goes into great detail about serving with true love while inspiring others to work towards a common goal.

Long ago, Voltaire observed: “The best is the enemy of the good." More recently Jim Collins suggested, “Good is the enemy of great." I was reminded of those admonitions as I began to read Excellence Wins. With the assistance of Dean Merrill, Horst Schulze shares the most valuable business lessons he has learned thus far during one of the most interesting careers I have as yet encountered. Born and raised in a German village that had neither a hotel nor a restaurant, he eventually became one of the most highly admired world leaders in the hospitality industry. The details that Schulze cites have a secular rather than a religious significance. They serve as examples of ladies and gentlemen throughout the Ritz-Carlton organization serving the guests, other ladies and gentlemen, who are entrusted to their care.Long ago, Caesar Ritz said that he and his associates were committed to providing superior service to hotel guests that is "invisible." That is only possible when rigorous attention is paid to the details. It all begins with the process of creating great employees: "first, [begin italics] selection [end italics]; next, inspiring [begin italics] orientation [end italics]; then, initial [begin italics] teaching [end italics] of specific job functions; finally, [begin italics] sustaining [end italics] what has been taught." In order to strengthen this process, Schulze wrote 24 "Service Standards" (see pages 121-127) and every day before each of the three staff shifts begins, the leader "reads one standard, makes comments about what it means, and maybe tells a story or reads a relevant customer comment to show the standard in action."I am deeply grateful to Horst Schulze for sharing this account of his personal growth and professional development. As he would be among the first to point out, an organization is only as great as its people, at all levels and in all areas of the given enterprise. Bill Gardner does it again! If you’ve been lucky enough (like me) to come across Logolounge, Bill’s other amazing series and website/community, Logo Creed is all that and more! Tons of great logos, but a much deeper dive into what makes a great logo and how to create one that really communicates what you’re trying to say. Ultimately logos are these simple marks that have to say so much with so little (not an easy thing), so knowing what visual elements (color, shape, effect…) say to a viewer is really important to being able to communicate the right message. Bill breaks all that down. It’s like the curtain has been pulled back! This book is a must have and has brought a new lens of clarity to my design! It is also filled with eye candy that inspires on its own. Bravo!AND, congratulations Mr. Gardner, I just read that the AIGA (the most respected design organization in America!!) has just chosen you as a Fellow! For those of you not familiar with this, it is among the highest of honors, if not THE highest of honors for a graphic designer today. Well deserved. : )

Logo Creed is a must-have for both the professional and the unseasoned designer alike, as well as the fledgling student designer whose interest in logo design has only just been piqued. I believe this book could be an alternative to firewood in your chimney, and probably it would not last for few minutes.The most dangerous about such books, is when an author pushes his/her personal opinion, personal terminology and blurred vision into novice readers. Imagine that some design student or a fresh design graduate would use some of the misleading ideas and concepts here and hold to it as a rule, method or a bylaw; can you imagine the outcome?The funny part is that it combines facts extracted from solid resources and somehow blended with the author's twisted view of design. Imagine it this view, if someone decides to categorize clocks and finds one in a 1$ with a built in light, he decides to name it a "Clocklite", and moves on to his grandmother's house to find a dusty one and egoistically renames it as "DustHour" ... Now all vintage & antique clocks become "DustHour". (The book embeds such descriptions of logos - chapter 12)Last but not least, how in the name of hell you could accept that "A Spherical logo icon" suggests "Illusion", also "A pixelated logo" suggests "working together" and the funniest is that a blurred logo suggests "an invitation to come closer" & "deep thinking" ... Come on !!!Finally, there are a lot of advices in the book, some may work, but the most are disastrous, or even corruptible, especially to the young minds. DO NOT TAKE THIS BOOK SERIOUSLY !

I expected more excursions and sites to see. I thought there would be more description about each area. I did enjoy the maps and they seemed helpful.

This guide is short, concise and very helpful. It summarizes everything I need to know about my upcoming vacation to Jamaica!

We used it constantly and had a great vacation! Only wish it was divided by location instead of activity theme.

The map was great in helping us get a feel where we were traveling. All information seemed to be current and very helpful.

I am a huge fan of Alexa Riley books. They have every element that makes me love reading. The alpha and over the top Lucas is truly swoon-worthy. Ava or Petal (as Lucas calls her) is just trying to make her boss proud and not fall hopelessly in love with her boss’s brother—Lucas. Unfortunately, it’s already too late. She has loved him from a far, but he doesn’t know she exists.Ava is a strong, curvy woman who is helplessly in love with a man who doesn’t know she exists. She loves her job and her boss is amazing, but something is missing from her life.Lucas is a busy businessman and he has no time for dating or a romantic life. He is content in his lonely life, but his mom is pushing for grand babies and if she sets him up with one more woman, he is gonna lose it. He gets out of another terrible blind date by promising his mother that he already has a date, but he doesn’t until he sees her...Petal—Ava. When he sees her, he knows that she’s the perfect solution to his little fib, but she is also something more and he is going to do whatever it takes to keep her in his life.Lucas and Ava are so sweet together. Lucas is an over the top, caveman, alpha when he meets Ava, he is going to do whatever is necessary to make her his. Ava is smart, kind, sweet, and headstrong. She won’t let anyone push her around, but she wants Lucas to be part of her life and she is willing to let him into her life if it means that the one piece of her that was missing can be filled.AR did it again with another great story and those epilogues...they were amazing! Some were sweet, some were sexy, but all of them were just what we (as AR readers) needed to end another great read.

There is always a compelling moment taking place in CLOSER because of the abundance of heartfelt emotions and lusty passion. When two people from very different worlds meet, the attraction between them is immediate. Neither has ever felt the desire to be with another person so strongly, and I could practically feel this great need because of the author’s descriptive way with words. Alexa Riley definitely knows how to add realism to a scene and make me want to believe.Since Ava may not have been totally qualified to work for the lingerie company where she was hired, she has done her best at all times to prove no mistake was made in choosing her. When the business has a new line coming out and needs someone different to represent the product, the brother of her boss insists Ava should be used for the photos. With Lucas Caldwell being a silent partner in the company, his wish is heeded. He also wants Ava for himself and is determined to make this goal come true, too.With a man devoted to making a particular woman his in every way, the story is highly passionate throughout. I could feel just how much Lucas wanted Ava, and I smiled because of the way in which she affected him like no other woman before her. Their reactions are genuine along with what remarks are made, and they put their hearts on the line at times. When Alexa Riley creates a romantic couple, I know sparks can fly and emotions will be overwhelming. There are several epilogues told from each of their views, and every one is very informative.

I first listened to Closer via the Read Me Romance Podcast hosted by Alexa Riley and Tessa Bailey. This podcast is so much fun. It provides readers with free and short audiobooks written by our favorite authors.I'm a huge fan of Alexa Riley's insta love and sexy Alphas. With Closer, it was hard for me to get through the narration when I first listened, so I decided to wait for the ebook version instead. I found that this e-book just didn't do it for me. Lucas was too over the top for my tastes. I loved Ava though, and the epilogues were definitely the sweet cherries on top 🍒

I got so caught up in this book that I was so surprised to find myself at the end of the story... I am like OMG!!! Lucas is quite the gentleman beneath all his protective and possessive alpha personality. But when he laid eyes on Ava, everything in his head just flew out the window and he becomes this fumbling imbecile that rubs her the wrong way. Even after all that mess, he refuses to let her out of his sights because no other woman has been able to bring out these feelings and emotions in him like Ava. While he loves what he is seeing in Ava and craving to be near her and the ability to hold on to her curves, she is a bit insecure about her figure and unsure about her capabilities to hold the interest of someone like Lucas and is just not sure about them starting anything.All of that is not stopping Lucas from pursuing her and aiming for something permanent with her.

I didn’t know anything about the podcast, before reading this book, but I have to get in on that! How have I missed listening to my favorite duo?!Even though I didn’t listen to the story, I was so glad I got to read it at least. I adored both Lucas and Ava. She is so super sweet and innocent, while he is definitely all alpha male from the moment he sees her. In the beginning, Ava is a little cautious of Lucas, but he is determined to change her mind, showing her that she is his everything.You can’t go wrong with an AR book. It’s just not possible. It’s always sugary sweet with tons of passion, and an over the top alpha who loves his woman something fierce. My favorite part of this book was the bonus epilogues. Ah, so perfect!

This is my honest and voluntary review.This updated and expanded version of Closer is exactly why I've preordered ebook copies of all of the Read Me Romance books that I've loved so far - it added so much more to the story and made Ava and Lucas' road to HEA that much more well rounded and dreamy and FUN! When I listened to the story originally, I enjoyed it but it felt like something was missing... what ever that enigmatic element was is definitely present in this version and I couldn't be happier about it! It's definitely worth the .99 cents to add it to your library and revisit their story. 3.5 out of 5 wine glasses.
