About the Author

Emile de Bruijn studied Japanese and museology at the universities of Leiden and Essex. He worked in the Japanese and Chinese departments of the auctioneers Sotheby's in London before joining the National Trust, where he is now a member of the central collections management team. Emile has lectured and published on many different aspects of chinoiserie in historic houses and gardens. He was a co-author (with Andrew Bush and Helen Clifford) of the catalogue Chinese Wallpaper in National Trust Houses (National Trust, 2014).

As an avid reader of Emile de Bruijin's blog for the National Trust Collections, I was excitedly waiting for this book and I cannot think of anyone more qualified to write it. At last now there is a book that features this beautiful and singular style of wallpaper, which has been an enduring force in interior design for centuries. The photos are clear and colorful, the writing is likewise beautiful. Not since French Scenic Wallpaper 1795-1865 have I treasured a book this much!

How someone who is looked up to and respected could manipulate a young man like this person did is incomprehensible. This book is a must read for every parent and young adult. The more we understand how these people operate, the more we can prevent this abuse from ever happening again.

Chicago's De La Salle Institute was a typical school for two young Irish Catholic boys like Arny and Chris Alberts to attend. It was a Christian Brothers school, a Burr Ridge based religious order. Arny was a talented athlete while Chris had been blessed with the brains in the family. Basketball, baseball, football . . . you name it, the kid was there, but Coach Cap was also there watching them. The surreptitious watch came from practice. He was a man who knew just what to do to unsuspecting young men. He had a script, an insidious script he would play out many times in the years to come.No one knew about Arny's past. He was careful to hide his seizure activity, something his mother helped him with. He knew just what to do when they occurred. It was a dark secret he didn't want to reveal. He began to drink when he became an adult and learn to mix his booze with extra Dilantin, a potentially lethal combination. Alcohol neutralized his meds, but deadened his pain. Arny casually admitted to himself saying, I was no stranger to the drink." (p. 21) He wanted to dull his raging pain, a dull aching throb of a "monster" that could, would, and did strike him when he least suspected. The "monster" was a series of repressed memories. They began and ended with a man named Phillip Cappelleri.Arny's wonderful wife Paula, with whom he had two children, oftentimes became the brunt of his anger, had no idea of the demons her husband carried inside his soul. It wasn't until an old high school friend Pat Sierzega phoned and asked to speak to him about Coach Cap. The candid dialogue began to eat at him because "Old memories had been buried for fear of discovery, placed intentionally deep so that they would have no chance of being found." (p. 41) Cappelleri had sexually molested Arny, his brother Chris, and Patrick, but how many others had he destroyed?Arny began to feel like a whirlgig-beetle uncertain where his life would take him. Yes, there were many positive things in his life, but the demons of his past began to overtake him. He was soon diagnosed with depression and given Lexapro, but that couldn't take away his past, a past Coach Cap had stolen from him. The monster was still inside the school system many years after he'd left. Arny "wanted to cry and scream from the depths of [his] soul." (p. 80). This heinous dreg of the Earth had to be stopped. Would the men be able to do it? The statue of limitations had gone by . . . what could they do to save other young men who might fall into the clutches of a serial sexual predator?This jarring, candid exposé of a man who came to terms with the sexual abuse at the hands a trusted mentor will stun the reader. This is not a "cute" memoir, nor is it one in which a man probes the psychological and psychiatric motivation of someone who molested him. Arny Alberts memoir is raw and, in some sections, very graphic in his description of the abuse. At first the tale appeared to ramble, yet it was clearly a reflection of the distressed psyche of a man suddenly forced to confront a horrifying past, a past not of his choice or making. We're not looking at a book that will ever end up being a best seller, but this book simply reached out and touched my heart. This memoir provided a cathartic opportunity for one man, but also speaks to us of something that should never happen, but continues to haunt our young people. It seems like we read newspaper articles about young men and women being sexually abused by authority figures all too often these days but they don't even touch the surface of what actually happens behind the scenes. I originally thought this was going to be just a work of fiction, a story about a young man who was abused, but once I started reading I realized it was the true account of a young athlete who was sexually abused by his trusted coach over a period of years. He wasn't the only boy. There were several others, but nobody came forward. The coach was still coaching and probably still is today. Just like in the newspapers, these people get moved from one job to another, nobody stops them. And each time, more children are damaged.The author, Arny Alberts, takes us into the dark world of sexual child abuse and answers the questions about how this kind of thing can occur, how it starts in a seemingly innocent way, right under the noses of parents and school administrators. It also asks disturbing questions about whether or not parents or people in charge at some point suspected something and chose to sweep it under the rug because they were too afraid or embarrassed to confront it and the horrifying result of that kind of thinking.I've never known anyone who was abused and I guess have only thought about it when reading news articles about religious figures or school figures being arrested and then it was difficult to think of it much beyond the punishment (if any) the abuser was facing. This book opens up the raw emotions that the young person experiences and the effects of the abuse that last a lifetime. It is a story that needs to be told because people need to know how easily this can happen. Every parent and every school, church or anyone involved in youth activities needs to be aware of how this type of thing starts, how these abusers cover their actions, and how the abuse escalates and continues.This isn't a neat, easy to read story with a happy ending. Life of sexually abused victims doesn't work that way. There were times that I had to skim over parts of the book, some of the agonizing details were just too emotional and painful to read. But this is an important story, one the author had a lot of courage in publishing. It's a book that everyone with children or who has responsibility for people with authority over children should read.

It showed me the strength victims possess and it dared me to hope again for our future. Burnt Cookies helped me to see the inner strength even I have. I was very frustrated.After all, I still had never heard of pentatonic patterns, intervals, flat vs major 7ths... and when I did hear about something like a "perfect fifth", my brain would get stuck in why it's called a fifth, and what makes it perfect. (I found myself trying to read about Pythagoras late one night...)My wife found these podcasts and they were everything I needed: - A fundamental approach to the Theory of music, rather than a sheet of chords - Well paced - An Intellectually curious approach - Accurate and solid and deep - Serna tells what he's going to demonstrate, demonstrates it succinctly, then reviews what he just demonstrated - I know most of the songs he references well2 weeks in, I've purchased both Fretboard Theory books, one in paper and one on Kindle. I'm on podcast 12. And I'm boring everyone at parties telling them excitedly about all the magical things I've learned.Every day now I play my lovely bass and my new semi hollow body and my acoustic. But I can hardly hear the wonderful new sounds I'm making, for all the clicking in my head as everything falls into place.I've been a teacher all my life, so I can see appreciate Desi Serna's gifts as a teacher. Praise and thanks for this amazing guidebook into music theory.I just wish I lived in Nashville so I could come take lessons.

I have collected many different music theory books and pdf books over time. I go in and out of using or really trying to apply it. when I do I am always pleased with the results. this is a great read that gives you info you can use right away and describes things in a way giving you a nice look at real things, not the usualy explanations of theory. after you look at 5 plus different books, they all do look the same. I am looking for stuff beyond beginner and before super advanced. I have been playing guitar more off than on for almost 30 years (ouch), so it becomes easy to keep finding stuff that is explaining things from a never played before point. that is frustrating cause these usually end right around where I want them to begin!THAT SAID, Desi manages to explain things in a way that you can think of differently and cut through the fat. he also doesn't bother with learning to read music, there are plenty of books on that, so that is a welcome thing as well. I enjoy what I have read so far, feel like it is really sticking in my brain better than the dry theory books I have plenty of. is it a magic bullet? maybe not, but you will enjoy it more than the other theory books you have read. it works well for people that know something as well as the beginner, and that is a feat in and of itself. I've been playing for about three years and highly recommend this book. It's written with clarity and is very comprehensive in its coverage of the fretboard topics. The book is well-organized has given me an understanding of the fretboard. If I can draw a Mapquest analogy, it's almost like the difference between reading a list of steps (turn right, go 20 miles, take exit 321) and seeing the map image itself. Fretboard Theory is giving me the big picture and a more understandable view of playing the guitar.One of my frustrations has been going to a musical show - and these days I always focus on the guitarist - and being in awe of how he moves up and down the neck of the guitar. My reaction is usually to say to myself "Oh man, I'll never be able to do that." Fretboard takes the mystery out of how those flying fingers know exactly where to go. There actually is a road map to the neck of the guitar.This is not to say that it's filled with shortcuts and "secrets." But it is comprehensive enough that I'm confident I'll make good use of it for years to come.By the way, I'm 74 years old and took up the guitar as a retirement hobby. A number of the suggested songs to play along with are a bit too contemporary for me (i.e., heavy metal, punk), but Desi Serna gives enough information for me to go to the library and get CDs that suit my generation (early R&R, Doo-wop, etc.).I bought the Kindle version because I like to access my books when I'm out of the house (in waiting rooms, etc.)To sum it up, this book is worth buying if you are past the very beginner stage. Just what I needed for classes. Sadly, like most Rio abridged books, this one isn't organized well and finding information is tedious. The font is tiny and can be hard to read at times, but it was what the class needed and I was thrilled to find it second hand.

The book got here before the estimated shipping date which was good because I added this class late. The only reason im giving this book 3 stars is because the CD didn't work. It did not play any files and my laptop is new so I don't think the problem was on my end. I didnt need the CD I just thought I'd check it out and might use some study tools.

I loved having the digital copy of the book, i was able to use it on my phone, iPad, and laptop! This made it soo easy for me to study and do my homework anywhere I went without having to drag along a huge textbook!

Many grammar & spelling mistakes, perhaps the Kindle reader doesn't transfer accurately? Jarring to a picky bibliophilic etymologist who cringes at grammatical errors, left me wondering "where are the editors?"

I would be lying if I wrote that I didn’t enjoy reading this book. However, I think all those stars and characters from long ago in Hollywood would be turning in their graves if they knew what is being written about them. Even Hollywood must surely have had some characters who had a moral compass, according to this book it did not exist and the accused can't defend themselves.

If you've read Hollywood Warts and All volume 1 and 2 DO NOT waste your money on this book!!! It's the same thing repeated just in a different format. The spelling errors are annoying!!! Very disappointing

This book started off strong, lost steam in the middle, and landed flat on its face at the end. The only thing that kept me reading to the end was my curiosity; I wanted to know who the killer was. The things that bothered me might seem insignificant, but they prevented me from becoming fully absorbed.I never felt like I had a clear picture of Kate, and I don't just mean what she looks like. I know what she likes to do for fun... but I don't really know who she is. That made it very hard for me to connect with her. It was frustrating because I know Elston had it in her to write a fully fleshed-out character; I have a very clear picture of each of the River Point Boys.I really didn't like the way Elston wrote the adult characters. It turns me off when parents are written in a way that makes it obvious the author didn't want them to be part of the story but couldn't think of a plausible reason to completely leave them out. That, to me, is lazy. Kate's mom is present throughout but never really *there*. She's always taking a smoke break, stuck working late, and tossing her car keys at Kate so Kate can drive around and get caught spying on people. Mr. Stone, on the other hand, was very much a part of the story. And he was interesting and likeable until he did something that was out of character and clearly just meant to service the plot. Another turnoff.Then there's the ending. The killer wasn't who I thought it was... but the reveal wasn't that exciting. But perhaps that's mostly because I just didn't care at that point and wanted to be done with the book so I could start a new one.One thing I really liked about this book: dual perspective. Most of the story is told from Kate's point of view, but there are short sections told from the killer's perspective. It really added interest to the story and kept me reading even when I was feeling bored by Kate.This book was an entertaining quick read, but I'm not rushing to recommend it to anyone.

It took me only two days to finish this book, working a full time job, and still coming home to make dinner and spend time with my loved ones.. That’s how good it was. This cover of this novel is what captivated me at first (let’s be honest, we all judge a book by it’s cover) well this one is gorgeous. I’m so glad i made the purchase, this novel captivated me from the very first page until the very last page.The story begins with a narration of what takes place out in the woods, on a Sunday morning while five friends go out shooting in the woods, which is normal of them to do. Only this time, only four came back, Grant Perkins what shot by one of his own friends, was it intentional or was it an accident?The novel takes us through many different theories and possible scenarios, and we get to know the friends..Through the narration of Kate who works for the DA’s office, the same one who happens to have Grants case, so Kate happens to have a direct insight on the happenings of this case.We also learn that Kate is close to one of the boys, but she soon discovers truths that change everything.She learns how essential she is to this case, little does she know what a big part she will play in finding the answers that everyone is desperate to have.There were plot twists that had me in shock, and I loved that!Only one of the boys knows the truth, but why keep it hidden, because it was an accident and he is scared that he will face murder charges regardless, or because it was absolutely intentional and he does;t want to go down where there’s three other boys that this can be pinned on?In this novel we learn hard truths, and I can assure you that this novel will keep you wanting justice, answers and to know what really happened on that Sunday morning, when the town was shook with a death and became divided. What I Thought...• I could not put down This Is Our Story. It had me from the get go and wouldn't let go of it's hold on me.• I love the way the story was told. There were chapter's from Kate's POV and also interludes from the killer's POV, only we don't know who it is.• Nothing is as it seems. There are five boys in the group, one of them is killed and the other four agree to this pact to "protect" themselves. It's absolutely crazy, but I could totally see this being a real story.• Kate was pretty awesome. I loved her job in the courthouse and that she was fiercer than I thought she would be.• There were quite a few plots twists. Some I saw coming, some I didn't. It was really hard to know what was true and what was a lie.• Belle Terre is a small town and I loved the mix of small town politics combined with rich people politics. It added another delicious element to the story.• I was pleasantly surprised that there was a little romance in Belle Terre. I picked up This Is Our Story because of how intriguing the mystery was, and given that half the characters are suspects to a murder I just assumed no romance.• Kate's BFF Reagan was the kind of best friend everyone should have in high school. She calls it like it is, but is also supportive.Overall you should read This Is Our Story. Now. Seriously. The mystery has so many twists and turns - you won't regret it.
