I love this new book about one of my all time, heroes, Nadia! As a child of the 1970s, I remember her flying around on the uneven bars - defying gravity - and wanting to be just like her. Now, as the mother of a young gymnast, it is great to be able to share with her this story of someone so pivotal in her sport, and in my own childhood. The messages expressed by the book - that young Nadia channeled her natural energy and abilities into athletics, but that she still had to work hard and overcome setbacks to win those perfect scores - are important ones in today's highly competitive world of youth sports. Great timing with the Rio Olympics around the corner! The words are engaging and easy for young readers to grasp, and the illustrations are beautiful.

My kids are 7 and 5! We have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book over and over! The story line is interesting, exciting and engaging! Their full attention was captured through out the entire book....leaving them wanting to know more about this incredible gymnast! I know this will be a favorite, especially with the Rio Olympics approaching! Kudos to the author and illustrator on a job well done!

As a Romanian and the mother of a daughter I am proud to read Nadia's story in this format: children book ..or any other. I will buy one for every little girl in my family! The illustrations are so nice and accurate, depicting Romania just as it is. The story like is amazing.

This book is fantastic! I have 7 year old b/g twins and a 4 year old little boy who loved reading about Nadia! This book is very well written & and the artwork is great! I highly recommend this book for preschool and elementary age kids.

Love that it's a gymnastics book and love that it's based on a real gymnast! My 6 year old likes it doesn't keep her attention now as much as it did when we read it the first time.

This book gets a great deal of credit as being the book that began the cottage industry of wrestling biographies. And Mick Foley is a talented writer with a lot of personality in his writing, and he has a fascinating story to tell.The main problem with this book is that it’s published by WWE, so you never feel you’re getting the full story, but rather the WWE-sanitized version of the truth.The first 200 or so pages, dealing with Mick’s early years breaking into the business, are easily the best part of the book. The middle of the book, dealing with his years in WCW, are also interesting, but clearly written with bias. This was written in 1999 when WCW was still a competitor to WWE, and Foley takes every chance to trash the competition. He gives Vince McMahon a pass for ignoring him all those years, instead focusing his anger on JJ Dillon, who was with WWE in the early 90s but by 1997 had moved on to WCW.The last part of the book dealing with his 1996-99 WWE career is little more than a synopsis of his appearances on Raw and WWE ppv’s. Very little insight or backstage tales from this period. Mick writes of Vince McMahon as a genius and benevolent father figure.This was a great book in its time, but it hasn’t aged well when compared to all the other wrestler biographies not published by WWE, this one falls a bit short.

Mick Foley was better known as Mankind and Cactus Jack, the "hardcore legend" as he calls himself tongue-in-cheek.Have A Nice Day, or as he preferred, Blood and Sweatsocks, was a bestseller in '99 in the middle of the attitude era.Foley was not a typical pro wrestler, if there is such a thing. Most were either muscular, or agile high-flyers, or giantsuper heavyweights. Foley wasn't the strongest or the most skilled technically, but he was among the toughest, andwas able to take punishment, "bumps" or dangerous falls like few others. Many pro wrestlers are bright-Kevin "Diesel"Nash comes to mind, but Foley surprised the world with his literary ability. He not only wrote the book himself, hewrote over 700 pages by hand in a series of notebooks over the course of a couple of months.He was specifically hoping to reach non-fans baffled by this industry, which was popular especially in the '80s and '90s.Apparently he did, but it's amazing for fans of the '80s and '90s, for whom all the old names come back. They beginwith Abdullah the Butcher, who in every way seems like ancient history from another era, as well as Terry Funk,Foley's great mentor in the hardcore ways.There is a brief section on childhood and youth, but fairly early on he gets to the business. Other than discussionsof his wife Colette and children, most of the book focuses there, while his sequels go on to other topics. He spentyears in World Championship Wrestling (WCW, the South) and had tension with Ric Flair despite his unmatchedability. As a booker, Flair was responsible for promoting wrestlers and the storylines. There were legendary battleswith Vader, as well as Sting, Ron Simmons, and Steve Austin was also in WCW before going to WWF/E. Austin wasinsanely popular in the mid to late 90s, and Foley is candid about his envy several times. There are also jokesand insults about Al Snow, a performer of some ability who never made it quite as big, but was good attrading roasts.The 80s and 90s developed into the "attitude" era of wrestling. Like that product, this book is at least PG 13 orTV 14. One of the controversies was when wrestling returned from TV 14 to PG. Foley was part of this era butself-critical of it, thinking of its effects on his family with the portrayal of sex and violence. But it was an excitingera. The highlight of the book is my senior year of high school. The most controversial matches in history wereBret vs. Shawn in 11/97, and Mankind vs. Undertaker in 6/98, the weekend that I graduated.

When I was in engineering school in Asia, that summer, I had to travel back and forth is the most rickety bus.One day on the way to school I found this guy reselling books on the street. None of what he sold were of any interest to me as I passed by but on something strange caught my eye, under an adult novel was a book with a picture of Mick Foley...This was the book. The was selling it for a few rupees....5 rupees to be precise. He had no idea what he was selling!I bought it and it was my companion on those bus rides for the next few weeks.So many good anecdotes....you will cry and laugh as you read through. What makes Mick such a great author is that his writing style makes it seem like he is your best buddy. It feels like he is talking to you directly. like each page is meant for you to find and read.I have read several other autobiographical books before and since, none of them come close.Give it a read to see how the business worksGive it a read to see how Wrestling used to be, how folks paid their dues. Seems like a solid electronic version of United Methodist denominational rules. Contrary to a prior review, it does have a table of contents. It is searchable. Excerpts can be copied and pasted (send your favorite or hated paragraphs to unsuspecting colleagues and parishioners!). Read it anywhere -- say, on vacation with a good strong drink at your fingertips or in that committee meeting that should have ended an hour ago. Ponder the mysteries on interesting sections that nobody else reads, like Our Theological Task, or prooftext with church organization trivia. As far as I know, it has no hidden code to truth, but I haven't tried reading it backwards. Useful for Twitter arguments. A seminarian must-have. My prior version made it through UM polity class with relatively few battle scars; I'm sure this version will be as reliable. Recommended.

This 2016 edition is perfectly adapted to the Kindle user. Well indexed and easily searchable, contrary to the ill-informed review which gave this one star, complaining of being unable to use such a digital reference. WIth two screen strokes you can arrive immediately at the contents page. There, with one keystroke, arrive instantly at the ¶ number pertinent to your search. Then, while studying that subject, if there is a reference to another ¶ number, you can glance at it with one keystroke to the hot-link contained there, then pop back to the original location. Then, you can cut and past a sub-paragraph relevant to some discussion and distribute it by email to the interested parties: meanwhile, you can bookmark it for your future reference.... In sum, I feel sympathy for those restricted to the limitations of analog when living in a digital world.

Moreover, its historic and present instructions and guidance are to help guide anyone that is a member of United Methodism about living in true discipleship of Jesus Christ. In so doing, both a congregation--as a community--and it's individual members produce the loving fruit of God's holy spirit. They do so by loving their neighbors, their selves, and even those whom they may perceive as enemies. Thereby, the purpose of United Methodist instruction and organization is to be a present and powerful example and invitation to all people of our loving, generous, gracious, sacrificial, and constant creative God.

It's really difficult to rate this book since it is meant to be a reference tool to be consulted when necessary rather than read from cover to cover. It is only of value to United Methodists or those who want to know what United Methodists believe and how their church functions. That being said, every United Methodist pastor should have this book on hand. As other reviewers have pointed out, this electronic version is well indexed and easily navigable.

This review is for the Kindle version. Required reading for United Methodist clergy. While the Index has always been a bit of struggle to navigate in the hard copy, it's made easier via the digital edition. The content, though, is unparalleled.

If you know how to use this volume and its purpose, it is not really as bad as it may look. I found the Amazon e-book format to not only be less expensive but in some ways easier to use than the hard copy, It also allow the ability to copy and paste limited portions for inclusion in a PowerPoint presentation I was asked to facilitate.

Thorough but could be easier to navigate. Needed to understand the Methodist beliefs on major concern prior to joining a Methodist church.

GORGEOUS book! This is seriously a beautiful book. And if only...I am pretty crafty/artsy and I am going to try a couple of these, but I have my doubts LOL. Most of these are very complex. The book description says "easy-to-follow guide" mmmmm, not really. There are lots of pictures, but they are really small and are not by any means a step-by-step which is what I really wanted. So if you are looking for an instructional book - this is not that. It, however is a book with beautiful pictures and ideas for inspiration. If you can look closely you might be able to figure out how to draw them.I am a little disappointed that there is no real step-by-step but I am not really disappointed in the book as a whole. It is still a beautiful book and I can look at it over and over. It does have a lot fo great ideas in it! Now if only I can duplicate them :-) I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Dover Crafts - Thank You!

I welcome any chance to see more photos by Gary Winogrand. And Geoff Dyer''s mini-essays on the photos are wonderful. But the book's design and photo quality is unsatisfying. The pictures are unnecessarily small! If the designer had thought to turn the book sideways---with the spine on the short edge---the (mostly landscape format) photos could have filled the whole page, and thus have DOUBLE the area. It's an egregious design error. My sense is also that the reproduction quality on the photos is inferior to the quality in the MOMA New York and the SFMOMA Winogrand books. The images in the present volume seem a bit grayed out, with insufficient contrast and sharpness. Hardly what I'd expected from a deluxe, expensive photo book that's very heavy to hold...and annoying that about half that weight is blank white paper around the small photos. But, with all this said, after spending a few days with the book, I am getting to like it. In certain lights and angles the photos are readable. And the cascade of Dyers's text is king of hypnotic. After an hour or so, everything around me started to look like a Winogrand photo. I was in that world, where everything is interesting.

This book, as described in the author's intro, is based on a template that has been used before on other photographer's work. That is, a sample of work (100 images), one photo on one page and on the facing page a written narrative by the author related to the photo.The photos span much of Winogrand's career, so this could be a good introduction the younger photo aficionados to this photographer's work. Additionally, a good amount of information is presented in the back of the book as to the general dates that the photos were taken (with the limitations of non-digital data in the film capture) and locations. There is also a listing of all of Winogrand's previously released books, for those that may wish to dive deeper.There will never be a set of photos from a prolific shooter like Winogrand that makes everyone happy... only one hundred out of thousands, but this is a good sampling of the many projects he shot over many decades. I was surprised by several color images, and a couple obviously shot with telephoto lenses, since Winogrand and his wide-angle lensed Leica is well known to street photography fans.The narratives from Dyer range from very specific to the photo observations, to thoughts about the general subject. The thing is, they may or may not have anything to do with Winogrand's thoughts while actually taking the said photo. Nothing in the book indicates that Dyer ever actually met or worked with Winogrand, so you can give the narrative whatever value you wish.Physically, this is a very impressive book. The quality makes the price well worth to cost.

I'm a fan of Winogrand and street photography in general, so I was interested in seeing a 'deeper cut' of his works, beyond the many photos we typically see from him. I ended up being pretty disappointed with this book for a number of reasons. In its defense, this book does not contain a lot of the usual shots you may associate with the artist. However even with this in mind, I was not impressed with the curation of photos, many of them are not particularly interesting. This is made all the more painful by the format of the book which is to place a single, fairly small (5x7-ish) sized photo on one page of the spread, with the other page filled with arrogant philosophical paragraphs trying to analyze the work. The writing drones on in paragraph after paragraph, sometimes with elitist tangents about society in general, which seem very incongruous with the photos of Winogrand. Some books you don't love, but you take some pride in keeping them on the shelf for their photos and content, but this one I wish I had not purchased.

It's a decent book with some good info and I'm glad I got it. That being said, I personally do not like explications, explanations and "the meaning" of photos or any other art presented to me. I'd rather just have details on Winogrand's life and shooting style, rather than what this or that might represent in each photo. That's all subjective.

I like Dyer and I appreciate this collection, but in this book some of the essays feel as if he ran out of interesting things to say and thus felt the need to jazz things up with flights of fancy. The essays are not, in my opinion, going to be of much interest to most visual artists or street photographers. He also often comes off as a horndog in discussing images of women, for example stating (paraphrasing from memory) that in a given image it is obvious which of several woman is the real beauty (it is not) which I found to be more about Dyer than about the actual photographs and a little alienating.

...some times he has really interesting things to say, other times he just rambles, (but still, with interesting stuff to say.) Great book, with scads of pictures I’d never seen before. So tune in or tune out that guy on the bar stool beside you, you’ll probably learn something, and either way, have a great time.

Geoff Dyer is one of my favorite writers. I am not a photographer but I appreciate the art of taking interesting photos. This book has dual narratives: the short essays by Dyer and the street narratives exposed by Winogrand's brilliant photographs. I have read and re-read each essay numerous times and absorbed the wonder of each photo. The book is stunning and marvelous, greta gift from Dyer.

Good match here. Dyer is insightful and interesting (maybe even right a few times, who knows?). Winogrand's insistence is always there in a cranky personal way that still manages to resonate decades later now. Nice book.
