From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up. Intended to place the history of Native North American cultures into the context of world affairs, this book uses a split-page format, listing, side by side, benchmarks in both areas between 28,000 B.C. and late 1996. The juxtapositions point up a few intriguing parallels, such as the presence of pyramids on both sides of the Atlantic, but are in general more effective as a tool for helping students of history to think globally, and as a graphic way to link contemporaneous events on different continents. Nies lists incidents by year, not specifying exact days or months, focusing only on the indigenous cultures of Mexico and the continental U.S. (mentioning Captain Cook, for instance, only in connection with his claims on the Pacific Northwest) and is very selective of "outside" happenings?so much so that the "World History" column is occasionally blank for a page or more. On the other hand, the author's political, social, religious, and military analyses are lucid and specific, and she breaks the limitations of the format for longer boxed essays when necessary. Several maps and plenty of dark but revealing black-and-white photos enhance this eye-opening survey. A good choice for collections needing an economical alternative to A Chronology of Native North American History (Gale, 1994).?John Peters, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Publisher
This book is a great resource for students and history buffs alike. It stands out from other books of its kind for several reasons: First, it's a lot more accessible than lengthy historical 'tomes' that take hours to search through just to find a quick fact or piece of information. Because of the chronological way that it's organized and the concise, yet information-packed entries, it's easy to find exactly what you're looking for right off the bat. Second, this book puts Native American history in context with other key events going on in the world, which gives the reader perspective on how events on both sides of the Atlantic influenced each other. Lastly, it's totally comprehensive in scope. Whereas many books treat the subject with an ethnocentric approach and only cover events taking place after the Europeans set foot on American soil, this one goes all the way back to the very origins of these indigenous people around 28,000 B.C.--- truly ancient history! And it also covers events right up to modern times, highlighting the issues and concerns faced by today's Native Americans. -------J. Rendon, Editorial Assistant

I bought this book after skimming it at a friend's home. As an author, an American, and someone fascinated by history, I love this book. Ms. Nies has very cleverly divided the book into split pages and by year with Native American History on one side, and World History on the other. In the beginning she quotes Barbara Tuchman, one of my favorite historians, who wrote: 'Events do not happen in categories - economic, intellectual, military - they happen in sequence. When they are arranged in sequence as strictly as possible ... cause and effect that may have been previously obscure, will often become clear, like secret ink.' Ms. Nies displays this in abundance in this book.
I bought this book because it was written by a writer new to me. Recently I read " The Girl I Left Behind". I was so impressed by that book; I Googled the writer. Then, ordered her other books. "Native American History" is set up in a very unusual format, which may prove difficult for readers of novels or historical fiction, or even history. My family members are lined up behind me, waiting their turns to study this publication. This Spring I had read "Caleb's Crossing" and was fascinated by the historical references in a work of fiction, especially because only recently some local Native American language from Massachusetts has been translated by a young woman. I live in south central Mass. Within the "Bay Path", a route traversed by several native American groups. This adds another perspective to my interest.
Filled with a plethora of information on how these great peoples contributed, affected and have been a main part of our heritage. Kudos to Judith Nies for this chronology of the indigenous American peoples! This is a must have if you want to experience a well rounded perspective of American history.
With a life long interest in the native people of this continent and a deep compassion for the injustices they have suffered, I found this publication to be accurate and enlightening. The way the chronology tracks the activities of the native people concurrently in parallel format with world wide history makes it a prized resource on my bookshelf. As a freelance writer currently writing a historical novel, I go to this reference often and continue to find new information that supports my writing. And the detailed bibliography makes this reference all the more valuable
I purchased this book from Amazon as my husband wanted to read it. He is interested in early history. He is so glad he got this book, he is loving every page. He has shared some of what he has read with me and I agree that it is a really interesting and informative book. A great read! Thanks,
It is great to read about how Native American history connects to world history. This book illustrates the injustices experienced by the Native Americans after European invaders and conquerors came to the Americas. Should be a must reading for all students.
If you want to learn about what was going on in the world of Native American Indians this has a timeline that contrasts world history and Native American History. This book is good but I would have liked more detail in the discriptions of the timeline. Perhaps a reference companion to this book be a helpful asset.
Informative/heartbreaking accounts of native America. Everyone should read this.
