As a bilingual speaker of French and someone who spends a considerable amount of time in France, including Provence, I was eager to see what Keith Van Sickle would choose to write about. So many books out there about "the French life." What I found was not only a delightful read in each chapter but a real capture of the essence of what the French excel at: Life. His style is down to earth and very witty. But I loved his depictions of everyday interactions; he captured the magic of those daily happenings and the people themselves. I have spent time in St. Remy too but what he writes about could be true in any Provencal town. The discussion with the butcher, time spent making sure the meat was cooked the way it should be cooked, brought a smile to me. Been there. It's true. I share his admiration for the French's ability to debate vigorously, even hotly, political ideas and then in the next breath, ask someone to pass the wine. Discussion over. I would add that often these discussions occur with three and four generations at the table, all participating! My favorite parts had to do with language of course. Van Sickle again captured the unique wit of the French. I won't spoil the stories by repeating them here but my favorites include the quick retort of the physical therapist regarding a squirrel that caused an accident (hysterical). He also captured the way the French use in everyday parlance, the unique picturesque sayings in French. We say "my glass is empty. Can you pour me a little wine please?" The French say "les mouches ont pieds" or " la mer est basse" again funny and fun. The essence of Provencal life is the sheer enjoyment of the moment. This too van Sickle captured beautifully. In a little town called Pelisanne, I sat on the terrace at the table of a friend's home one evening. After dinner, this sweet woman simply turned to all of us (her family, my husband me) and said simply "on est bien icic. On n'est pas bien Jacqueline?" That's it. Pure contentment with what one has. The cigales were singing, dinner finished, the food excellent and everyone was together. Yes on est bien ici and that is exactly what Keith Van Sickle captured in his book. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed this book, the author's second about learning to live in France. His gentle, self-deprecating style gradually draws you into his and his wife's deep love of their French friends and the French way of life. As I followed their adventures I came to understand and appreciate the author's insights into what it takes to really know a foreign culture and country. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.

This second book from Keith Van SIckle was a wonderful, happy and funny read. I loved his first book "One Sip At A Time" and this one is even better. Keith is very observant about his interactions with people (maybe most so with the French!), and he has such a humorous and witty way of putting it in words. This book describes his and Val's time in Provence in some more depth than the first book, and left me laughing or smiling many times. We need books like these. This book is about Keith's love for Provence and also for his wife, Val. Read it and enjoy! Even if you are not a Francophile or a Provence-lover.

This book truly captures the challenges of living in France--not that I've lived there. But we've traveled a lot in France with the longest stay of three months. The chapter on the 1968 "manifestations" is so 2018-19 "gilets jaunes." The friendship theme throughout marks the most significant difference between my French visiting and the author's longer stays--for which I am envious. I, too, work at my French--every day through reading and watching French t.v. I totally understand the challenge. Each time I go, I'm more comfortable, so my efforts have been rewarded manyfold. I recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in visiting France--especially to the parts of France outside Paris. Well done, Keith Van Sickle.

I got a big kick out "One Sip at a Time," in which the same well-intentioned, goofy American couple tries to make a go out of living in France. In this new book, Keith and Val are back for a second season. They've learned more French. They've made a delightful new set of French friends. They start their next Provence adventure full of optimism about what might go right. But . . . but . . . but -- it doesn't take long to realize that they've promoted themselves into a whole new set of zany adventures, all of which require a bit more savoir faire than they happen to possess at the moment. Two pages into the book, a new calamity is already brewing. Yet their optimism is never crushed, regardless of whether they're making a mess of a French breathalyzer test -- or watching helplessly as as gung-ho French butcher turns their simple order into a staggering mass of flesh. And every now and then, Keith does get the last word. His deadpan account of a small-town misadventure involving an experimental theater troupe is hilarious. "The grand finale started with the lady in the fur coat crumpling up a paper and eating it. Mr. Burger King burned the other papers, one by one. Meanwhile, the lady in the wedding dress stroked a ceramic cow skull . . ."This book enters that wonderful zone of travel writing where we get all the excitement, without ever being obliged to leap to our feet and scream "Bravo" when tonight's show comes to an end. Instead, we can quietly toast the author's skill in making it all come alive in the relative safety of our own homes.

I enjoyed Keith’s first book, both for its laugh-out-loud humor and for its personal touch, helping one feel almost there. This new book still has his personal touch and its humor but he goes into his and Val’s adventures in greater depth. He explores how having one’s mind and reactions in two places has sometimes proved difficult to reconcile. He does not suggest one country is better than another, rather that they are simply different, each having their own delights. This is an ideal book for the traveler or the wannabe traveler!

Review

After over 100 years of mandatory schooling in the U.S., literacy rates have dropped, families are fragmented, learning "disabilities" are skyrocketing, and children and youth are increasingly disaffected. Thirty years of teaching in the public school system led John Taylor Gatto to the sad conclusion that compulsory governmental schooling is to blame, accomplishing little but to teach young people to follow orders like cogs in an industrial machine. He became a fierce advocate of families and young people taking back education and learning, arguing that "genius is as common as dirt," but that conventional schooling is driving out the natural curiosity and problem-solving skills we're born with, replacing it with rule-following, fragmented time, and disillusionment.Gatto's radical treatise on public education, a New Society Publishers bestseller for 25 years, continues to bang the drum for an unshackling of children and learning from formal schooling. Now, in an ever-more-rapidly changing world with an explosion of alternative routes to learning, it's poised to continue to shake the world of institutional education for many more years.Featuring a new foreword from Zachary Slayback, an Ivy League dropout and cofounder of tech start-up career foundry Praxis, this 25th anniversary edition will inspire new generations of parents and students to take control of learning and kickstart an empowered society of self-directed lifetime-learners.

This short book (~100 pages) is a compilation of about 5 speeches and essays given by the author, supplemented by prefaces, introductions, and afterwords. The book rails against compulsory institutionalized education at its most focused, but also spirals out into railing against "networked" society in general. Along the way, Gatto reveals that he seems to be a creationist of some sort--at least to the degree that he finds an issue with evolution being taught as a "fact" instead of a "theory *cough*--and that TV is bad. Very bad. In fact, escapism of any kind seems to be bad, really. You could apply his theory to meaning that all fiction, all video gaming, all fantasy, sci fi, etc is all bad. To me, this seems like a decidedly old fashioned attitude rooted more in a disdain of change than any profound argument. But when Gatto critiques institutionalized education, he is right on point. I've ordered his next book about A Different Kind of Teacher: Solving the Crisis of American Schooling. Basically, if you can get past the kind of antique-elitism that colors the vision of many of the "old generation," you'll find relevant critique here.

John Taylor Gatto is an award winning teacher that isn’t afraid to buck the trend.Dumbing Us Down – The Hidden Curriculum Of Compulsory Schooling by John Taylor Gatto is a masterly an in-depth view into how public schooling really works.Sampling many of his best personal essays, Dumbing Us Down features the true reasons why education in our modern day system is failing: because it’s meant to be that way.Gatto reinforces his main premise with a thorough examination of public schooling in America. He carries this out rather incisively given his no holds barred approach to the matter, and this is very refreshing. While many others have tippy toed their way around the issue, Gatto harpoons the heart of the matter with statements such as:“…schools and schooling are increasingly irrelevant to the great enterprises of the planet. No one believes anymore that scientists are trained in science classes or politicians in civics classes or poets in English classes. The truth is that schools don’t really teach anything except how to obey orders.”[1][Bold Emphasis Added]“Schools are intended to produce, through the application of formulas, formulaic human beings whose behavior can be predicted and controlled.”[2][Bold Emphasis Added]“It is absurd and anti-life to be part of the system that compels you to sit in confinement with people of exactly the same age and social class. That system effectively cuts you off from the immense diversity of life and the synergy of variety; indeed it cuts you off from your own past and future, sealing you in a continuous present much the same way television does.”[3][Bold Emphasis Added]Such scathing statements leave no question to Gatto’s courageous stance, and helps the reader understand the plight we face rather cogently.Another component of this ongoing public schooling issue is how vital the community is, and more importantly, the family unit, in helping foster a healthier, more independent, more curious, and ultimately more self-sufficient individuals through proper education. While this might seem obvious in hindsight, it isn’t being employed that much at all in our modern environs.Throughout the length of the book, Gatto fiercely touches upon the many different factors that have helped cause this growing dilemma. Some of these include the overwhelming amount of television being watched by society in general, and more specifically by children, while other components have to deal with the inherent designs of schooling such as the fragmentation of education, the removal of the family from an individual’s education, the poor life tenets individuals are taught, and much more. One of the best parts of the book is what Gatto calls ‘The 7-Lesson School Teacher’, where the author shows what teachers are truly expected to inculcate into students. Once read, this particular lesson to the reader might seem facetious, but it’s really not. When one views what Gatto is stating with an open mind – while keeping cognizance of the fact that he worked decades for the system – then one completely gets to be aware of why failure in schooling isn’t the exception, but the rule.In fact, more specifically, Gatto gets at the heart of why public schooling is destined to fail:“Mass education cannot work to produce a fair society because its daily practice is practice in rigged competition, suppression and intimidation. The schools we’ve allowed to develop can’t work to teach nonmaterial values, the values which give meaning to everyone’s life, rich or poor, because the structure of schooling is held together by a Byzantine tapestry of reward and threat, of carrots and sticks. Official favor, grades, and other trinkets of subordination have no connection with education; they are the paraphernalia of servitude, not of freedom.”[69][Bold Emphasis Added]Gatto has unbounded a phenomenal book in the field of public schooling and more importantly, what true education should encompass. Please keep in mind, schooling and education are not the same thing. Particularly, this differentiation and what each means is one of the main gems of this book.To finalize, this book is a veritable fountain of information that is intense in precision and thought-provoking in its implications given that they filter into all aspects of our lives, and ultimately seep into the future. This is why it’s vitally important for individuals to become autodidacts, and help others become so through our interactions with our families and communities. Self-teaching is more important now than ever, especially with the deteriorating effects of public schooling.Because of all the reasons mentioned above, and myriad more, this book is definitely a must read for everyone. As the author saliently notes:“Aristotle saw, a long time ago, that fully participating in a complex range of human affairs was the only way to become fully human…”[47][Bold Emphasis Added]____________________________________________________Sources & References:[1] John Taylor Gatto, Dumbing Us Down – The Hidden Curriculum Of Compulsory Schooling, pg. 21.[2] Ibid., pg. 23.[3] Ibid., pg. 24.[4] Ibid., pg. 69.[5] Ibid., pg. 47.____________________________________________________Suggested resources reviewed below for those seeking ideas to self-teach and become autodidacts:Socratic Logic V3.1 by Peter Kreeft Ph.D.The Trivium – The Liberal Arts Of Grammar & Rhetoric by Sister Miriam Joseph Ph.D.How To Read A Book – The Classic Guide To Intelligent Reading by Mortimer J. I didn't enjoy reading this book. We homeschool with a mostly "unschooling" or interest-driven methodology slant so I would have expected this book to be affirming. Instead I found it unsettling. The way the arguments and opinions were presented made it feel like a series of loosely justified, angry rants. I felt I was reading propaganda from a divisive and militant speaker intent on proving a massive and deliberate conspiracy. The state of schools today (I think) is more likely linked to apathy and top-heavy centralized management of the organization. That was formed less or if some manic desire to rubber stamp children and more out of a realization that the unequality in substance and resources from one school to another boilled down to cruelty drawn along socioeconomic and racial lines. We continue to smooth away the curriculum into easier to teach and quick to understand lumps because it's easier to measure. If you take out coverage of topics that could create controversy, there's less complaint from those masses that participate. Industrialized schooling is not borne from a calculated elitist conspiracy but the mundane ease of generalized application to a large population.

Good book. I have spent almost twenty years in college education. Colleges had to adjust their material to the watered down curriculum that gets passed on to it from high schools. At one point I had attempted teaching in the high school system but it is poisoned. They are more oriented to social indoctrination than education. There is still safety in Mathematics and the physical sciences if you can make it to upper division classes.

John Taylor Gatto, upon winning the award for teacher of the year after 30 years in the classroom, delivered a speech that was so shocking that the reverberation is still being felt today. This speech is the first chapter of Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling and it is honest, insightful, and scathing. Essentially, he is an education whistleblower.“School is a twelve-year jail sentence where bad habits are the only curriculum truly learned. I teach schools and win awards doing it. I should know.”Those “bad habits” he is referring to are what he outlines in the first chapter as being the true lessons taught in schools: confusion, class position, indifference, emotional dependency, intellectual dependency, provisional self-esteem, one can’t hide (constant surveillance). This book does not leave you feeling inspired – it leaves you outraged. But sometimes, that’s exactly what is needed to spur change (and it’s why the Sage Homeschooling book begins with our experience exiting the school system).Read the book. Face the truth. Create a better path.

The Oxford Guide to The Book of Common Prayer: A Worldwide Survey

From Publishers Weekly

This new reference work, edited by Boston College professor Hefling and Church Publishing v-p Shattuck, traces the many revisions that the Anglican Book of Common Prayer has undergone and examines the sundry versions of the prayer book used in different countries. (After the American Revolution, for example, Episcopalians in the new United States omitted the prayers for the British king.) Varied liturgies for weddings, argues Gillian Varcoe, show how Anglicans in different times and places responded to culturally specific pressures and changing social understandings about marriage. Throughout, the contributors underscore that "Anglicans do their theology in the context of worship." Given the current energy swirling around the concept of a worldwide Anglican communion, and the West's increased attention to churches in the southern hemisphere, the essays on prayer books in Africa and Asia are especially welcome. Concluding pieces hazard some guesses—sometimes a tad whimsically—about the future of common prayer. What do technological changes mean for the prayer book? Word processors have allowed churches to produce Sunday bulletins, rendering actual books unnecessary. Maybe one day soon, Sunday worshippers will read the liturgy from Palm Pilots or BlackBerry devices. This rich volume is sure to become the definitive source for studies of the Book of Common Prayer. Review

"It is well conceived physically, graced with both illustrations of historic prayer books and text boxes from the liturgies being discussed, which are a significant help to the reader. This authoritative guide to the Book of Common Prayer as it once was and has now become will well serve anyone interested in Anglicanism or the prayer book tradition." --Christian Century"To understand the phenomenon of Anglicanism we need to understand the Prayer Book -- in its original setting and in its many transformations. I cannot think of a better and more comprehensive resource than this collection of expert discussions in helping us learn more of what Anglicanism has given to the literary heritage of Christianity and culture alike." --from the Foreword by the Most Reverend Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury"Monumental and magnificent! This Guide makes clear why the Book of Common Prayer is both a religious and a literary masterpiece. To say any less than that of this volume would be to misrepresent it; to say more would be to diminish its stature." --Phyllis Tickle"Through the beauty of language, the Book of Common Prayer has nurtured a spirituality that has defined our very unity of faith and worship. The Oxford Guide is both timely and welcome. It takes us to the root of our common life and gives us a living word as we learn about liturgy, language, culture, tradition, and revision. I heartily commend it." --The Most Reverend Andrew S. Hutchinson, Archbishop and Primate, The Anglican Church of Canada"While the essays vary in length, all are thorough. The general quality of the writing and editing has made every page worth reading. It is a book that both teaches well and reads well." --Richard J. Anderson in Historiographer

This is an excellent history of the BCP and includes an overview of the history behind the revisions. It also gives a good background on various Prayer Books found throughout the Anglican Communion.

Terrific reference work.

This is a wonderful (if now somewhat dated by a few years--Prayer Book revision does go on) reference work about the history of the Prayer Book and about editions thereof. Reading it has expanded greatly my knowledge of my chosen religious tradition and of my denomination's siblings around the world.

This is the classic, and it is a thorough examination of prayer books throughout the Anglican Communion. A must-have reference for those seeking in-depth knowledge of their prayer book or a comparison among prayer books.

This is a very ambitious project and you get a bargain for your buck. The print is small and there is a lot of information packed into these fine print pages, but I was disappointed by the lack of detail concerning the Prayer Books of 1549, 1552, 1559, 1604 and 1662. I would have preferred some indepth discussions of the significant theological developments in these versions before launching into the variations of the BCP in the worldwide Anglican communion.

Excellent purchase. Arrived on time, and it's a fantastic resource when studying the Common Book of Prayer. I am so glad I bought it.

The book itself is wonderful on its own on content but the one I received was just perfect, just like the ad. Loved it and the vendor.

From one Book of Common Prayer to many over five centuries, this text provides an outstanding and excellent analysis of the historical and functional evolution of the current Books of Common Prayer currently in use. This Oxford Guide stands out as a primary reference for all.Richard W. Wheeler

I bought this book for my daughter to read, on her request. She had read another book by this same author and really enjoyed it. That book was called Hatchet. She didn't get into this book like she did the other. We ended up donating it to the school library.

A lively memoir for all ages/levels, and one of the most successful books I've found for ESL with adults, especially those who know something about sailing. What I didn't expect, though probably should have, was that because Paulsen's prose is so direct, and lyrical at just the right moments, it inspired enthusiastic writing from students who'd otherwise been reluctant to pen anything.

Paulsen's non-fiction rivals his outstanding fiction! All his books range from good to outstanding. I can't stop reading his work!

Wonderful but not as much depth as the Hatchet Series or Winter Dance. To me, it seemed like a filler book without much meat. Still it was an enjoyable read from an author that has a true gift for writing. His words move like butter over warm toast.

Very short book by a great author about his own experience learning to sail. A copy should come with every sailboat.

What's not to like about a Gary Paulsen story, unless you wanted more length to the book! He is a fantastic writer that makes you feel like you're right there with him as he shares his extraordinary adventures.

As a sailor, I found it be an easy fun read. Some laugh out loud segments.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel.
