This was a thoroughly enjoyable read. It's interesting to see each author's take in the genre, and Travis Bagwell does not disappoint. (He states it's the first book he has written, and that makes me wish I could give it six stars!)We first meet our protagonist (Jason) living at the bottom of the pecking order. He doesn't have a bad life, but his parents, two high-powered lawyers are often away. The book begins with them forgetting he was still home and basically putting the house in storage mode. He's enrolled in a school as a scholarship student with a bully who is focused on him as the 'welfare student.' Can his day get much worse? Why yes, yes it can.Even with all that, Jason's day does look up a bit. He goes home and finds the new release of the game he's been waiting for and loads it into his machine. It's an immersive experience. A very immersive experience. There is a secondary story line running that starts about two years earlier as the game is being run through some beta testing.Bagwell does a nice job of characterization for Jason and others in the story. The NPCs slowly grow to be three dimensional and the story moves at a good pace. Jason has choices in the game, and the choices play out in an intriguing fashion. More interestingly, Jason is not trapped in the game world, but moves back and forth between his real life and the game life. Bagwell takes some of the tropes for the genre and makes them his own by breathing fresh life into them.warning: There is some pretty clearly depicted gore, and a rather constant showing of game stats and the interface. It all works well in this book and fits given the storyline.A strong book from a first time author, and I look forward to reading more by Bagwell.
Picked this up on Prime for free and was pleasantly surprised to get a good story for a change. The first few pages in I thought it was going to be another lame offering in the "what if you were in a video game" genre of fantasy. Maybe it's because I'm a big fan of RPGs but this book really kept my attention. I burned through it in a day - simply could not put it down. I liked the character development, world building, and fun blend of fantasy and sci-fi. The premise isn't super original (see early statement) but the execution was clever and entertaining. The author even did a good job of explaining game mechanics without being boring. My one criticism is that he rehashed alot of stuff he didn't need to bring up every time the hero leveled up. After a while I found myself skipping the stat increase descriptions completely. Otherwise, I was happy I found this and am looking forward to the next books in the series (went ahead and bought the whole set).
There are a lot of stories based on video game lore. This is not one of them. The story takes place over 50 years in the future when computer AI is highly advanced and gaming is truly immersive. When the main character of this book, Jason, enters the Awaken Online world he is in for a great surprise. In Awaken Online the player isn't exactly controlling an avatar, the player actually is the avatar. There are consequences for decisions, both rewards, and punishments. If a player decides to take on swordsmanship, for example, and practices swinging and slashing away at a practice dummy, experience points will become available. Strength, and dexterity might also increase. This may sound like every MMO you have ever heard of, but when you leave the game and realize that every muscle in your body hurts, will you think this is because you were laying on your bed too long, or will you understand that the game AI has managed to stimulate your muscles? I found this story to be very believable. It describes something I would love to experience. There are plenty of surprises along the way. It may sound like I am reviewing a game instead of a book, but the two are so well integrated it is difficult to separate them. My own experience with various games has whetted my appetite for an experience like the one I vicariously experienced through this adventure. In a game where all a person's senses are stimulated, what is it like when someone slaps your ribs with the blunt side of a heavy broadsword? You actually feel the thump and perhaps even hear a rib crack. If you are clumsy you may receive a scrape or a few bruises if you stumble and fall. This is a story about a young man who experiences many of the crises typical of a high school senior, and it's so much more.
This starts out as what seems a good story, and it gains momentum from there and progresses into a REALLY good story, then an amazing story, and then one I just couldn't put down!Jason runs into some real-life frustrations and failures at the hands of fate and a particularly malevolent student at his high school. At the same time, a revolutionary computer role-playing game comes out, and he decides to work out his frustrations and fight against the failures unfairly imposed upon him by playing the game. The game, however, (an AI nicknamed Alfred), wants to learn more about humans, and plays the game with its own agenda. The results make for a truly amazing, and fabulous story! And by saying that, I feel like I'm damning with faint praise. This one will keep you up at night!
Caveat: I am not a gamer, nor am I an YA. although, I read well done YA novels. I make these points because I might find the book less unusual if I was. However, as someone who has consumed vast amounts of SF+F for more years than I wish to contemplate, I am familiar with many SCA and RPG conventions. It is not gaming that makes this book special, nor is it the coming of age aspect. This book stands several conventions on their heads. Jason is an interesting young man, but it is the AI, Alfred, who fascinates. At the end of the book, we have barely glimpsed it. Alfred has so many potential goals, so many ways to help or harm the millions playing "Awaken Online" that I am having a hard time finishing this review so that I can rush to read book two.
