There are nights in which I look at the moon and can scarcely believe what we achieved by going there in the 1960s. The voyages of Apollo were an astounding technological and human achievement. In "Amazing Stories of the Space Age," I have sought to not only recapture some of those incredible feats of the space age, but to also detail some of the plans that were never carried out, but were eminently doable given healthy doses of daring and funding. There were other projects that would likely have resulted in failure, as they were outlandish given what we know today. But many would have been glorious had they been undertaken-and successful. The space age was an era of boundless optimism, bold thinking and boundless innovation. It is my fondest hope that by revisiting this era we can capture some of that bold thinking and apply it to the adventures we are about to embark upon in the new space age we are entering today.

This book was reviewed in Smithsonian's Air And Space Magazine, with a very good review. I am glad that I purchased it. I would have given it another star if it had been longer. At 68 (and having followed the space program since I was 8 years old) I know a little bit about many of these stories. However, Mr. Pyle gives a great deal of additional details that make them fascinating. To many, it is absurd to consider that our military actually considered a rocket propelled by nuclear bombs. We're not talking about bombs exploding in deep space (this is still being considered in the future.) As Mr. Pyle notes, this is from liftoff on earth. No one stopped to consider the radiation hazards of such a rocket. Once they did, the program was shelved. There are other examples of ideas that are amazing, some which actually worked - at least in some form, and often years later. If you are interested in the Space Age, this book is truly fascinating.

"...Nazis in Orbit..." provides an "inside baseball" view of mainstream missions readers have heard of and missions and space hardware which are more obscure. An informitive and entertaining read.

Very interesting recount of the development of rockets starting before Von Braun. I recall the rivalry of the services and NASA to get launch and orbiting hardware designed and online...was unaware of some programs like Blue Gemini. Great read..

A fun and informative book. A few of the stories aren't so "amazing" but it's still an interesting read.

A well written guide to a difficult problem. On the one hand, urbanization and affluence lead to less localized pollution, as a more affluent electorate becomes able to afford the costs of regulation, and new technologies limit pollution at bearable costs. Kahn points out that deindustrialization and the reduced pollution that it causes is not limited to the USA.But Kahn adds that such affluence also increases pollution that spreads across boundaries, such as that caused by greenhouse gases. Because such pollution occurs slowly and is hard to detect, democratic processes have not addressed it well.Although I occasionally wished Kahn's data sets had been more detailed, he makes his key points skillfully.

Ecological planning of cities is now assumed by many regulators to be a win-win proposition and numerous initiatives on the "greening of cities" are taking shape across the world. No longer are Curitiba in Brazil or Chatanooga in Tennessee the outlier case studies that frequented so many conference presentations. Cities are greening through multiple pathways and Matthew Kahn's new book Green Cities, attempts to understand this trajectory through the lens of economic analysis. The book's theoretical core revolves around the concept of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) - an economic hypothesis that gained much currency in the nineteen nineties by suggesting that economic prosperity initially leads to environmental decline but that eventually a self-correction mechanism then leads to environmental controls. Kahn notes that he was led to write this book after reading the Danish statistician Bjorn Lomborg's bestseller The Skeptical Environmentalist in which data that indirectly supported the EKC hypothesis was presented.The author is, however, quite nuanced in his analysis and does not blithely support the Cornucopian view that self-correction will take place in all circumstances. He first delineates the key attributes of environmental quality in urban areas, based on a review of environmental economics literature. In particular, air quality, gasoline consumption and use of public transit are given prominence. The data suggests a compelling case for the EKC hypothesis for air and noise pollution. Cities that have passed a certain threshold of income tend to have more clean and less noisy surroundings per capita.Kahn also acknowledges that the EKC analysis has its limitations since the spatial quality of growth of cities and migration demographics are not adequately captured in this analysis. While acknowledging this limitation, Kahn also misses some of the most salient attributes of "Green Planning," in terms of parks and pedestrian space or ecosystem-based water and drainage infrastructure that have been known to planners, at least since Ian McHarg's Design with Nature (1967).As an economist, Kahn is perhaps too preoccupied with the aggregate trends and less concerned with understanding what has worked in the greening process itself in terms of community acceptance. This is where, Kahn would have been better served by venturing beyond urban economics and also exploring the vast literature on environmental planning and consumer psychology. Indeed, the true mark of sustainability in cities is that the well-intentioned efforts at pollution reduction and green design can in fact be sustained through changes in political office.Some of the chapters in the book hint at this integrative analysis by providing some data on consumer preferences and voting behavior such as the analysis of Proposition 185 ( a tax increase on gasoline) as a function residential distance form the business center. However, the confluence of political factors, social pathologies, and planning constraints that can lead to such behavior are not adequately considered. The literature on Green Urbanist movements would also have been important to consider in this regard (Beatley, 2000).There is also a significant temporal disconnect between greening efforts that follow the path of economic development and the planning process itself. Plans for greening are often developed several years in advance of implementation and whether or not economic development is synchronous with that planning horizon is not clearly presented in the book.Referring to the planning literature, Kahn would find that even some of the indicators for sustainability have been studied in great detail by planners as well and might be quite useful for his own quantitative analyses (Berke and Conroy, 2000). Furthermore, the quiet success stories in the developing world can often get missed in macro analysis of this kind. For example, what would explain the relatively green policies in Bogota, Colombia that also defy the conventional EKC trajectory.Despite these shortcomings, Kahn has provided an important contribution to the analytical discourse on the greening of cities. He has successfully managed to present relatively esoteric economic methods for an informed policy audience within the span of a short paperback book, which is itself an achievement.

Advocates run the gamut from Plato to Scott Peck and include an array of philosophies from atheism to Zionism, with stops at humanism, Ayn Rand, Billy Graham, Teilhard de Chardin, Benjamin Franklin, Machiavelli and others. Censorship includes essays on freedom of speech and its questionable limits in the new media, advertising, national security, pornography and schools and libraries. Major proponents from most opposing viewpoints are well represented, including David S. Broder, Patrick J. Buchanan, Phyllis Schlafly and Jerry Falwell, Andrea Dworkin and the ALA. The format of both volumes is identical. Each essay is preceded by short introductory remarks and a list of three or four provocative questions to keep in mind while reading. At the end of each section of grouped essays is an exercise in critical thinking skills and a periodical bibliography. I listeded to this on Audio and appreciate the fact that the author read it herself. Unfortunately I found it to be slow-moving and ultimately not very interesting. It was nice to learn that Kennedy was a warm, kind person who treated her well and that his wife Carolyn was also a kindhearted girl's girl who loved to plop down on the couch for a chat. Maybe this felt a bit flat to me because I had just finished the poetic and beautifully written book What Remains by Carole Radziwell and this could not compare. If you are interested in learning about John and Carolyn from an insider, and you appreciate a well-written book, I encourage you to give that one a try.

While exact, word-for-word conversations from so many years ago would be difficult for anyone to recall, with Ms Terenzio you get the idea. John and Carolyn were fascinating and tragic. This book will tell you just enough without delving into any of the grittier details that are none of our business (and frankly, make them more human and relatable to me). As a kid on the cusp of adulthood when they died, I still see John as a perfect if not typically imperfect man, and Carolyn, well...I wanted to emulate her style then and would have loved to watch it evolve to today (I imagine her with full brows teaching all of us victims of the skinny 90s brow trend what's what...)One gets the sense that the author is a bit of a Forrest Gump-type character in the lives of John and Carolyn. Most notable in times like how they were on the phone consulting with her in their apartment just before John famously asked the paparazzi to leave his new wife alone. But hey, I wasn't there so who am I to say it didn't happen. There is no doubt that the author was close to John, and positively adored him, so if you are looking for an affirming testament to his roguish, charming character, with flaws and all, this is your book. Carolyn by all accounts (all two of them that I have read by people who actually knew her), seems to have been warm and friendly and frankly, looking for allies in John's crazy world- and more comfortable with less fancy folks...folks with humbler upbringings like her own. If their problems were as ugly as you might read in other books, you won't get any dirty here. No amount of dirt, at any rate, can erase what a tragedy it for them to go so unexpectedly, and while they were so young and full of promise.

Hated this; a poorly written tale by a hanger on with little detail and insight. More about the author and her needs and ambitions than about the couple. Frankly I am embarrassed I bought such a book designed only to make money for the author. We need to stay out of this late couple's life.

I not only loved this book, I also needed this book. It was incredibly cathartic. I'm a professional writer, and I disagree with everyone who said it wasn't well written. It is. For people who say there is too much about the author: she's the protagonist! The book is about her journey. I've been in show biz for many years, and I know what it's like when you're the nobody standing next to the person everyone worships. It's a complicated thing to try to live with, and that is what the book is about. The pictures we get of John and Carolyn are so honest and frank, I feel like I now know them. I read this book in two sittings, and it's going to stay with me for a long long time.

Before ordering this book, other reviews had expressed disappointment in the fact that the book is about the author - not the life of John Kennedy. It ends up capturing a 5-year period of Kennedy's life when he headed up "George" magazine in NY. However, the literal day to day description of those 5 years from the perspective of his personal "admin. assistant" tells you more about the "person" of John Kennedy and his wife Carolyn than any media story ever has - in my opinion. I couldn't put this book down - didn't get much done in my daily life until I finished it!!! I felt that she beautifully captured the "real" guy JFK Jr. and gives the reader a candid view of the private persona versus the world's perception. I was completely fascinated because I've always believed that there is a real person behind all of the "HYPE".

You ought to know who Chris Date is. Return with me now to those thrilling days of yesteryear (the late 1970's, early 1980's) when RDBMS has just been created by Dr. E. F. Codd. The problem was that Dr. Codd was a mathematician whose earlier work was with self-reproducing cellular automata. He wrote and thought like a mathematician, not a programmer. His notation was abstract and mathematical. He used standard set operators for Union, Intersect, Set Difference, membership and so forth. Projections (SELECT in SQL) was shown with a letter pi (ð) with subscript parameters, the selection (FROM in SQL) was shown with a letter sigma (ó) with subscript parameters and he invented the butterfly or bow ties for joins. In short, nobody could read it unless they were a math major. We did a lot of work with this notation and if you like curling up with a glass of sherry and a warm calculus book, the best mathematical book on RDBMS is still Theory of Relational Databases by David Maier (Mar 1983, ISBN: 978-0914894421).But the real problem was not that the early papers were academic. When the first SQL products came out, RDBMS was like pre-teen sex. Everyone claimed that they knew what it was and that they were good at it. Yeah. Right. Chris Date and Dr. Codd formed a consultancy to educate the world. Dr. Codd was the brains and the big name; Chris Date was the "Great Explainer" who wrote magazine articles and gave lectures. People could understand Chris Date! His INTRODUCTION TO DATABASES was a standard college textbook in the early days of RDBMS. His collections of columns in DBMS and DATABASE PROGRAMMING & DESIGN should be part of any RDBMS library.Date has since written a lot of books on databases for many different publishers. But even today, his sample database of Suppliers who provide Parts for Jobs is referred to by the name "SPJ" in the literature. Chris Date does not like SQL and writes his books in a language called Tutorial D. This language is directly based on Relational Algebra and Relational Calculus. You can find more about it at [...]. But you do not need to know this language to read the book; the code used is obvious and can quickly map into SQL when an equivalent SQL code is not given.If you think you know enough about Normal Forms and all that jazz, then you are wrong. I was. Date is back to being "The Great Explainer" again. He has a running examples thru the whole book that use simple, small data base schemas. He does not assume you are a math major, but just a working programmer who needs to be grounded in real work to get to the theory.The chapters come in pairs; the first is an informal look at the topic, the second is more formal explanation. For example: Chapter 4 is "FDS and BCNF (Informal)" then Chapter 5 is "FDs and BCNF (Formal)" and that pattern continues in the rest of the book. When you get bogged down in the formal stuff, go back to the previous section. Each chapter ends with exercises; do not worry, there are answers in the back of the book. Chris has written too many textbooks, and a lot of his exercises are really discussion questions.Keys are discussed in detail and he demolishes the surrogate key concept. Then he spends all of chapter 8 debunking the myths of denormalization. Yes, people still do it after all this time.Do you know the two purposes Normalization serves? I think of it as a method (not the only one) to reduce redundancy in a schema. But it can also correct a bad design. These are two distinct problems, but people get them confused. I am now thinking of which normal form I need from the hierarchy before I design a schema instead of a clean up after the first design.Seeing the current Normal Form Hierarchy made me feel like I had not kept up with my reading. The few SQL programmers that even know what a Normal Form is at all, think that it is "First Normal Form (1NF) is flat files", they have no idea about Second Normal Form (2NF), think that "Third Normal Form (3NF) is when I declare some column as PRIMARY KEY, and I am done" and they have no idea about other normal forms at all.Date gives a list of the following nine Normal Forms. Then he shows how something can be in one Normal Form and is by implication in all the lesser Normal Forms, but not in any of the higher Normal Forms.1NF = First Normal Form2NF = Second Normal Form3NF = Third Normal FormBCNF = Boyce-Codd Normal Form4NF = Fourth Normal FormRFNF = Redundancy Free Normal FormSKNF = Superkey Normal Form5NF = Fifth Normal Form6NF = Sixth Normal FormBut this is not all of them! We also have Elementary Key Normal Form (EKNF), Complete Key Normal Form (CKNF) and Domain Key Normal form (DKNF) as well.You get a simple introduction to Functional Dependencies (FD) and Multi-Valued Dependencies (MVD) and the algebra that goes with them. There are four possible ways to handle this.1) Ignore the problem and do not write the constraint. You see this "solution" all too often. And then someone tries to fix it in the application layers of the system.2) Declare the constraint. This happens to be harder in T-SQL because we do not have a CREATE ASSERTION statement. You might try using Triggers, but what happens when someone monkeys with the Customer_Accounts directly without waiting for a trigger to fire in the Payments table?3) Create a VIEW. But the user has to know that he cannot touch the Customer_Accounts4) Create a snapshot. Now the user can touch the Customer_Accounts, but that this is dangerous for data integrity.So, how would you fix it? And why?

I was hoping for a set of explanations and practical guides for designing a database in the same way a professional would have done it.But not exactly. This book focuses on database design under a quasi-mathematical model (borrowing from discrete mathematics) and provides valuable insight into database design without being limited by any database system. If you're trying to get into the database industry with your own fancy pants database model, then this would be a good read.Otherwise, this book isn't very helpful. It teaches you how to develop the logical design, but it stops there. You have to figure out how to derive the physical design, i.e. implement the design on an existing database management system. And thats what really counts if you're out there doing this for a living.I guess it would be great for students in academia, but no student can afford a book this expensive. : /

I recommend this work to anyone who is required to architect database solutions, especially complex ones. This book deals with rather dry topics in a clear and helpful manner. Other than vendor specific database references, this book and SQL Antipatterns (Karwin) are the two most referenced database books on my shelf.The only caveat is the book is typeset in a fairly small font which may prove tiring over long reading session. If small fonts are an issue I highly recommend the electronic edition.

This book is very in depth. I will admit that I am finding it to be difficult. In my opinion, I am a fairly good SQL "programmer". However this book is more theoritical that have I am used to. Which may be why I am finding it difficult. It is definitely expanding my knowledge of _why_ I do some of the things that I do (picked up from other, more "how to" books and experience).

Masterful. Anyone wanting to understand relational algebra and database design should read this book.

A very nicely done treatment of relational theory and database design. Mr. Date is the world-renowned expert on the topic and he treats the material with his usual attention to details and precision.

Brilliant! Alot of twists and turns to hold your interest. Writing style was different from the past Patterson books. But a great story. Loved the way the Detective and the Professor worked together to catch a serial killer who leaves a playing card as a clue to his next victim. Throw in a mayor who's trying to get reelected, and a police chief that wants this solved yesterday. A really good read.

Another thriller from James Patterson. The twists and turns in the story line were what kept me reading for a day and a half to finish the book. Excellent book

Dylan is my new favorite Patterson character, second only to Alex Cross. He is hilarious, smart and so wee-developed I expect him to walk right off the pages into my living room. I also fell in love with Elizabeth. She and Dylan work together peefectly. The plot was amazing, fast-paced and kept me turning pages into the early morning hours. LOVE this book and I hope this is the first in a series.

I don't generally leave customer reviews but with this book I felt the need to. James Patterson is, and has been, one of my favorite authors. There are a few surprises with character dynamics and the finale keeps you on the edge of your seat. I stayed up past midnight to finish because I had to know who done it. I highly recommend this whether you are a Patterson fan or new to his books. Mr. Patterson, please write more books with these characters.

One of Patterson's best collaborations. I enjoyed it immensely. I had read some reviews so homophobic they were laughable. I would read a follow up of these characters in a New York minute.

Definitely one of the better always moving mysteries. Very rarely was their full in information that didn't pertain to the main story line. Hard to put down since one moment of action went right to the next. Would recommend reading.

This is the first book in a long time that I have read in one sitting. I am bleary eyed and stiff,but it was so worth it. Loved it! There is also a series coming based on the boom. Can't wait!

I loved the book and enjoyed it even more when I accidently saw an ad for the new fall shows . The question I have now is what came first the book or the idea for the show lol. I was half way through the book when I saw this and then read the rest with the picture of the actor that will play the professor's part in the TV series . The only thing is I bet they will use this story and all of us who have read book will know what is coming.
