My curiosity piqued, I bought this on the merits of its great title alone. And subsequently was most glad that I did, as I found this book very very interesting. It was published approximately 11 years after the end of WWII, and bears a certain attitude unique to it being so relatively recent. The author was t-h-e-r-e and expertly describes his personal view of a window into time.While there are certain passages which are definitely aimed at a reader with next to zero knowledge of submarines, they are regularly overshadowed by many fascinating pieces on topics/tactics which I had never come across before. Again, the writer’s proximity to events – both personally and temporal – gives this book a unique viewpoint. I found Mr. Gallery’s thoughts regarding aspects of the ‘bad torpedo’ problem and of the Nuremberg Trials particularly absorbing.There is a lot of action in this work, I assure you it’s far from a dry recitation on how the two Battles of the Atlantic were fought.I heartily recommend this book.

This is a really excellent book about the U-boat and anti-U-boat war in the Atlantic in WWII. Although it's focus is on how the U-505 was captured by the antisubmarine Task Group under Adm. Gallery's command and his own direct decisions which culminated in the capture, the book encompasses a lot more. It discussed the broad context and history of the submarine war in the Atlantic from both the U.S. and german points of view; discusses submarine design, weapons and tactics; antisubmarine weapons and tactics; the history, personnel and war cruises of the U-505 leading up to its capture;and the history and actions of the Task Group. Throughout the book, the people are well discussed. Ultimately, the activities of the capture are described in great detail from the U.S. Navy's and the U-boat's perspectives. The writing is clear. Overall, the book is very well researched, organized, written and exciting to read.

Rear Admiral Gallery (one of the three brothers who were discharged from the US Navy at this rank!) wrote the story of the boarding of the Nazi sub U505 during WWII. At the time of the events described by the author he was commanding a task force of an air carrier and destroyers charged with hunting German subs. It was his idea to form and train a boarding party that would be able to capture an intact Nazi sub. The main theme of the book is the history of U505, from the laying of its keel, through its lone wolf career. and up to its capture by Gallery's men, and finally its final task, serving as an exhibit in Chicago science museum. Parenthetically we get a fair description of the German submarine effort to destroy allied shipping on the Atlantic, on service and morals, on politics, war, and God. Despite being an author of ten books (five of them fiction), Gallery is no Shakespeare. His prose is full of cliches, mixed metaphors (e.g. "...the Old Man Death knocking like a lusty young giant..."), and countless repetitions. The style is in the best (or worst) of The Brady Bunch tradition and reflects the authors rather simplistic philosophy of life. Nevertheless, despite its shortcomings, it is a vivid though a mite tedious yarn of the life and (mostly) death struggle during the Battle of the Atlantic

An excellent tale recounting the actual events that led to the capture of U-505 and its final resting place in Chicago. Definitely on my to-do list. This is nothing like the move, U-571 with Matthew McConaughey, this is good. The pace is well done and the recounting of actions in the North Atlantic are superb. I would also point out, the author, Daniel V. Gallery is a man of strong, conviction and faith. He addresses the moral points of wart I’ve never read in such detail. He goes into detail when Rader and Doenitz are tried for war crimes at Nuremburg. He had no problem with the Nazis being tried, but those in the Kriegsmarine is another story. They were tried for the same actions Gallery, Nimitz and King performed-unrestricted submarine warfare. He found it a bit hypocritical to say the least. I enjoyed his analysis of the current geopolitical situation and how we viewed our enemy at the time-The USSR. Remember, this book was published in 1956. I’ve read other works that held the same sentiments and fears regarding the experimentation with nuclear subs. They would be much deadlier than the S and U-boats of World War Two. They knew they would be lethal but they could not imagine the capabilities these new weapons would carry. I didn’t mean to get off point, but that’s how moving I found the story. Gallery holds nothing back describing how Germany almost completed strangling England to death and cutting off the shipping lanes to Russia. In 1942, the situation looked bleak indeed. But as in all wars, we started to win the technological war while the Germans fell behind. And it happened literally in the nick of time! Another six months and the U-Boats would have dominated the seas, but new radar and sonar devices allowed us to hunt down the killers of the depths. Who will like this? Any World War Two buff wanting to know more about the Battle of the Atlantic.Five Stars

More than a tale, an education of war at sea. I really enjoyed the richbackround. Is there any more?

This story is one of the best world wwII books I have read. Having seen and been through the U505 in Chicago years ago I wished this book had reached me before I did so. It beats any military saga I've read thus far.

I find this book easy to understand. Terms are defined, and the author provides a lot of historical context for his presentation. Since it's the first book I've read on Patanjali's teachings, I don't know how it compares with others. I gave it four stars for its clarity, depth, and presentation.

Swami Kriyananda does a great job explaining the scriptures in a way that is clear and applicable to daily life. This translation of the scripture is excellent as well. This is a must read for anyone who would like any direction at all on their spiritual journey.

Interesting insight into patanjalis writings. One thing that is missing in many texts is that Patanjali and the other ancinet sages put a lot of stock in being at traditional vaastu built temples such as Rameswaram, Chidambaram and other ancient temples built per vaastu shastras and agamas. In face each of these ancient sages attribute their awakening to spending a great deal of time in these places. It was not due to the icon but rather the energy the building produced on its own due to orientation and special mathematics of the buildings. They become energy generators.

If you're a follower of Paramahansa Yogananda, and if you're looking for the most authentic information about Patanjali, then this is the book for you. I read this book in a day, or so, because the information was so fulfilling and easy to understand with information applicable to daily life. I recommend this read!!!

Lots of good info in the book. Look past the authors personal feelings and just pull out the golden nuggets. Well worth the money.

Their daughters Holly & Molly carry on the spirit of entrepreneurship , vision & generosity past down from their great grandfather S.F.B. Morse. Enjoy the book. I did !

Loved this book. It filled in a lot of missing history for me of the area. I also felt it is inspiring to anyone wishing to be a conservationist and developer and artist combined!

This is a great book on S.F.B. Morse and his purchase of Pebble Beach and sorrounding area. He was a dynamic person and the book gives details of his personal life, his career, and how he came to develop the Pebble Beach area.

Totally great reading if U enjoy learning of the VISIONARY Individual personality shaping our history. My Father, John Gardfiner, worked 'for the Boss' his RESORT MENTOR from 1948 till SFBM's death in 1969.

Beautifully written! A genuine page turner. A fascinating journey of discovery of an extraordinary man. Treat yourself.

The author, Samuel Morse's grandson, shares the inside scoop about so many things, including juicy tidbits about celebrities like Frank Sinatra who were guests at the resort. After reading this book, I feel like I know more about the Monterey Peninsula than ever before. A great read any time, but especially in preparation for a visit to Pebble Beach. I highly recommend it!

I enjoy the recipes and the photos, but the pages are falling out of the book as I try the recipes! Disappointing.

Such a beautiful way to make cookies. Pictures with great instructions. Loved this. Love the talent of this author and Baker. A true artist. She's helped me make my cookies more beautiful and delicious. I don't know if they could ever look like hers, but they are prettier than they've ever been. I love her recipes and techniques but made my own designs too, using her ideas and techniques. Highly recommended.

If I was looking at a hard copy- I'd give it 5 stars. The info, pics and layout is excellent -- just not in Kindle. Too small.

This is a wonderfully informative and interesting book. What surprised me most was how much fun and action there was in those days in the gay community. It was more dangerous, but perhaps more exciting than life for gays these days.A few small proofreading details in case there's a second edition: on pp. 129 and 140, the author uses "dominate" as an adjective; the adjective form is "dominant." At the top of 144, there's this slip: "When she the appeared . . .". When the author is discussing various photographers, I wish he would include at least one illustration of each man's work, though examples can often be found online. Most important, I wish that at the end of chapter 15, in which he discusses J. Edgar Hoover's attempts to disrupt, hassle and imprison gays, the author would mention Hoover's own cross-dressing, and the fact that he lived with a male companion for many years.Anyway, a great read! Thank you!

This book was most excellent – eye opening, informative, and reframing a lot of my world. When it ended, I was disappointed the book didn’t continue ad infinitum. I’m surprised by how robust the queer community was generations ago and how little things have changed – I‘m surprised to learn I’m not living in something new. A must-read for all queers, Chicagoans, and especially Chicago queers. Strongly recommended.

Prior to reading this book, I had not heard of the story of Michael Rockefeller, and his tragic fate, so this story was totally new to me, and i was really excited to read it. The story is fascinating because of the mix of cultures involved, Dutch colonial ambitions, geopolitical historical aspects, as well as the nature of the wealthy, powerful Rockefeller family. The story presents prime fodder for great characters and a great mystery. It will not spoil the story to say that the fundamental question is "how did Michael Rockefeller die?". The book tells the story by jumping back and forth from more recent times during the author's research and back to the time of Michael's time on the island, up until he disappeared, and the ensuing large search effort. The jumping back and forth in time makes some parts of the book challenging. In addition, the book is made more challenging by the difficulty I had with place names and people names. There are numerous locations of importance referred to in the book, but there is not a single map - I wish there had been at least one map (several times I used Google maps on my smart phone). With regard to people's names, particularly the names of New Guinea tribe and family names, a family tree and/or timeline of relatives would have helped the understanding, and therefore the enjoyment of reading. Coupled with the disjointed time structure, the lack of maps and challenges with place/people names/relations, this book is not as good as it could have been. However, I still enjoyed it, and glad I read it, because the coincidence of peoples in New Guinea at this time in history is really interesting. Regarding the question of Michael's actual fate, I left the book no more convinced of any proposed way in which he could have died. I will not say more on this, so I don't spoil it for others - you'll have to make up your own mind.

Thanks to the daily kindle specials I'm offered, I have read many books I wouldn't have searched for. Savage Harvest was a pleasant surprise. There are many good reviews so I won't be repetitive.There IS a map of the villages and I don't see how this book could be written without going back and forth in time. I certainly didn't find it tedious. Quite the contrary, I couldn't put it down. This kindle version doesn't have the option to find out what percentage of the book has been read/remains so I kept going as I thought I must be nearing the end...and it's now 11 am.I'll be in NYC in a couple of months and I'll have to visit the Museum of Primitive Art at MOMA. I read this on an iPad but will have it on my iPhone 6+ so will be able to refer to the book while there. This is an exciting prospect. To actually SEE the artifacts that Michael Rockefeller acquired and see his photographs will be a big thrill. I hope his journals will also be on display.The cover made me think I was getting a book written decades ago yet the book was published in 2014 and Hoffman's trips were in 2012. It was interesting to see that "ramen" is now a major part of their diet. And the references to John who lives between two villages and works elsewhere for money and has adopted a more modern lifestyle (including satellite TV and watches CNN and BBC) was fascinating.Quite poignant was the author's realization that despite the really primitive conditions he felt a sense of kinship and belonging to a community. He talks about how his father left behind his Orthodox Jewish upbringing and Carl and his sister grew up in a small insular household among families with numerous children.If you like non-fiction, travel narratives, and biographies/memoirs genres, then this has it all. Highly recommend.

Hoffman manages to come up with as close to a clear conclusion on the death of Rockefeller as can be made, half a century after others had failed to do so. His patient immersion in Asmat culture yields dividends when he gets the descendants of those who probably ritually killed Rockefeller to almost admit it.The book is particularly fascinating in the way it interweaves the history, politics, and culture of the time, to show how these all converge on an eager, bright, but unfortunate young man. For example, how the "domino theory" of Asian communism led President Kennedy to try to placate Sukarno and oppose the Dutch. How Dutch colonialists, trying to show that the Netherlands were in control of Papua, led them to murder Asmat, which in turn led the Asmat to take revenge on hapless Rockefeller.The book portrays the Asmat culture to us Westerners in a way that helps to understand their world view. I have visited other remote clans in Papua New Guinea and have some understanding of this. Hoffman gets you deep into these natives' culture.I fault Hoffman for his annoying jumping around in time, backwards and forwards over and over. Very frustrating.And the paperback deserves a more attractive cover!A brilliant study. A compelling read.

This book is a thorough investigation into the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in New Guinea in the 1960's. But much more than that it is a journey into the mind set of the local people and how they dealt with and deal with their transformation from a closely held culture where logical relations between spirits and humans buttress their way of life into a "modern" culture overlain with government, religion, and lifestyles replete with unsatisfactory contradictions. The author seeks not to judge, but to explain. Starting with a murder mystery he ends up understanding a mind set that can include headhunting and cannibalism.

It was hard to stomach the initial descriptions of the tribal rites, at first. Then, the realization of modern factual events intersecting with my own travels in that geographical vicinity made Hoffman's quest more personal. I even had to check my high school yearbook for my Dutch Indonesian boyfriend's picture to "ground" myself into Hoffman's story. Grossly riveting at times, the mystery of Rockefeller's disappearance came to a somewhat satisfying conclusion.

As a former student of his at Rutgers, I found that the opening paragraph brought me back to classroom and reminded me of his inimitable style: Fast paced, logical, emotional, deeply involved, colorful, and thought provoking. I disagreed with his politics but loved and respected him as a man and as a professional. Too bad more of you never had a chance to be his student.

This book is a classic when it comes to slave master relationships in the American South. I read this book when I was in college. I still have it in my library and go to it every now and then for reference.

Geovese's account of American slavery encompasses many aspects of daily life, and is praiseworthy for its attempt to establish the agency of enslaved individuals in shaping their own identity within the confines of their social condition. In particular, I appreciated the chapter on selecting names. However, despite being a work of ground-braking scholarship, Genovese's work remains limited. Although, Genevese pays attention to the variety and variances in slave life, too often his history seems to be floating without anchor in time and place, as if the condition of slavery was consistent and unchanged through its existence in America and in all regions. Likewise, his interpretation is focused through the lens of paternalism, which limits the motivations of both the slaves and slave owner's actions.

This is one of the most important works on the subject of slavery. I think that understanding the culture of the United States at the time of the civil war is necessary to understand the culture of violence at the present time.

This book is a very good resource for my research about the Church of Christ. Book is in very good condition and was sent in a timely manner. Excellent seller.

Known as a classic in the genre, "Roll, Jordan, Roll" is a comprehensive examination of life in the slave south. Unlike other books of its type, Genovese explores both the slave and the slave owner's life and culture. The book extensively documents rare sources recording the views of the white slave owning culture.Though comprehensive, at times "Roll, Jordan, Roll" seems to minimize the horrors of slavery by under-representing many of the powerful slave narratives and by over-representing quotations from slave owners. Genovese is best in his discussion of the religion of slaves. The use of more firsthand accounts from the enslaved Christians themselves would have been helpful to readers.Over three decades old now, there are many books available which provide a complete presentation of both sides in the slavery experience. First, readers would benefit greatly from primary source books on the topic.
