The book is truly engaging and well researched. He corrected some things I thought I knew about mail order marriage, And helped explain the wide spread misconception. I think there’s a good balance here between the scholarly and the entertaining, but this is a book with footnotes so don’t expect to finish it in a single sitting. I wouldn’t recommend multitasking either, but on the wholeIt’s not very long or difficult. It’s just very informative.

My son was cited in this book on page 221-2 so I had to buy it for him! I also found it to be quite a fascinating read!

This was an excellent, well-researched, and informative book that was also really easy to read. I ended up knowing far more about the complexity of this than I knew before, and like how it unpacks the complexities of money, power, and gender in this situation. From reading this, I better realized we all make choices in the face of our specific circumstances, and sometimes those circumstances aren't readily apparent to those on the outside.

This is an interesting and balanced look at the mail order bride issue. Unlike some modern rants about mail order brides, this book actually presents facts when available and points out that many rants have no data supporting those rants.

Hands up if you thought that mail-order brides were a relatively new phenomena, restricted perhaps to some Asian and eastern European countries. You would be wrong…The author of this wonderfully engaging book looks at mail-order brides from an American perspective and it has its roots deep in history, importing ladies from many countries. In earlier times it was viewed as a form of future breeding stock and necessary to bring balance to the predominantly male pioneers. When there was difficulty attracting females to be exported, it could be time to dragoon in some convicts, trick a few people or make a very, very compelling offer and promise (that may be latterly broken).Abuse, deception, trickery and failure has accompanied each successive wave of mail-order brides over time, although through adversity and trouble has also come empowerment and opportunity for some women. The author has dug into a rich seam of long-forgotten legal cases to bring this fascinating book to life. It does not hector or judge, but highlights a broad range of problems ranging from breach of contract to human trafficking and prostitution and these issues are not things consigned solely to the history books.This is a meticulously researched book that could give much to the academic researcher whilst remaining open and accessible to the casual, interested reader. It was one of those great little finds that was hard to put down, despite it being a subject that might not have ordinarily been in the middle of this reviewer’s reading focus.There’s not a lot more to add. If you hadn’t considered this book but are open to reading something different, take a chance on it and prepare to be lost in the book for a fair few evenings!

Detailing the various experiences and accounts of mail order brides, Buying a Bride: An Engaging History of Mail-Order Matches digs deep and delivers a no-holds-barred narrative on a subject that has been left (until now) to modern documentaries and fan-fiction that barely scratches the surface. Going into this, I suppose I expected something a little more like "Birthday Girl", but was instead engrossed in a fascinating history dating back to the founding of the US. Despite sometimes reading like a textbook, Buying a Bride is a captivating study. Zug forces a conversation about the good, the bad, and the ugly, but does so with a weapon that few will be able to argue with: The truth.I'd like to thank Net Galley and the publisher, NYU Press, who furnished an ARC of this book.

This history of "mail-order brides," or matrimonial immigration, is well-written, fast-paced, and downright fascinating. Most Western minds balk at the thought of marrying a virtual stranger based on financial exchange and lifestyle compatibility rather than love, but as Marcia A. Zug points out in Buying a Bride, the love match tradition is relatively new--less than a century ago, people were marrying each other for much more pragmatic reasons. The question here is, were they right, or are we? I felt conned for buying this book. You will learn nothing from this book that you won't learn from airbnb's website or simply being a guest a few times. The front cover says "easily make up to $10,000 month" which I think is a great goal and an achievable goal but the pages therein give no plan for how to get there. Entrepreur Magazine's how to start your own travel hosting business is a much better resource.

We are all looking for ways to earn income these days or even extra income and becoming an airbnb host is a very good way of achieving that. But you can't just go into it blind, you have to know what you want to achieve what people are looking for and how to best market your accommodation. This brilliant book is fantastic at providing a really well thought out, straightforward strategy on how to do just that. It is well set out, extremely weell researched and gives you an informed and thorough guide on how to succeed at this. Very clever.

Super disappointed in what Mark has to offer. This same information can be found in about 10 minutes of research through airbnb's own site. The font is large and there is significant spacing leading me to believe this book should really only be half as thick. Was looking for some additional ways to boost my listings, but This did not provide that. I'd really question if mark has even done Airbnb or is just profiting off of reformatting what Airbnb already provides on their site. Definitely not worth the price.

Pretty much worthless. Obviously a self published "book" written by a amateur. Pages aren't even numbered! If the font wasn't so big and the margins so wide, it could be written on 7 or 8 letter size pages with standard font size and margins. Don't waste your money.

I am currently planning on starting an Air bnb. This book helped a good bit. Had some good things that help you prepare that I would not have otherwise thought of, for example... White sheets. I know, silly but they can be bleached or oxy cleaned after a fun night or just someone who may go to bed dirty. But yeah! Lots of other valuable information. Definitely worth it!

This book is what my son also picked out for Christmas. I haven't the slightest idea what it's about but all that matters is how happy he is having it. Took a while being delivered from December till March for it was in the process of being printed. I'm guessing on that part. As long as he has the book, all is well.

I love Boruto Naruto Next Generations manga! The artwork keeps improving plus the plot keeps getting better and better.

I'm very unhappy with this I bought it for my 12 year old daughter who is in love with anime I thought it was a book like the Naruto books you could read got it open it up it's nothing but pictures kind of like a uncolored comic book very disappointed they will be returning it.

It’s a pretty epic way to start an adventure compared to the way Naruto started his.

Another great volume with awesome artwork. Plus some Boruto/Sarada fluff.

Mark W. Muesse is the W. J. Millard Professor of Religious Studies at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. He earned his PhD at Harvard in the Study of Religion, working with Gordon D. Kaufman, Richard R. Niebuhr, Wilfrid Cantwell Smith, and Diana Eck. He was honored in 2008 for outstanding teaching at Rhodes College. I have struggled to digest information from numerous other sources that chronicle the evolution of the Hindu traditions. This is the first one that delivers the information with clarity, precision, and understandable language. Beautiful illustrations complement the text and enhance comprehension so that you remain engaged, no make that ENTHRALLED, throughout the entire book! Fabulous book that is recommended reading for all fans of religious studies and should be required reading for aspiring yogis.

A scholarly, but easily readable, text on the Hindu traditions. Written primarily for the college classroom, but perfectly suitable for any interested reader. Perhaps, more detail than the casual reader expects, but the detail is not overwhelming. Well illustrated.

The Hindu traditions are so vast and ancient, it is hard to be "concise", but this book does a great job without getting bound up in deep and treacherous academic language. Excellent resource for the curious and beginners in learning about religious traditions of India.

I took my time reading this book so that I could savor its contents. I enjoyed the quotations and illustrations. I have long been a devotee of Hinduism and studied it in college. This book pulled together my bits of knowledge in a really profound way. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for knowledge of Hinduism.

A good general overview of Hinduism approachable for undergrads.

The textbook format helps to breakdown certain core elements. The only complaint is the brevity, and it seems like the whole book is a race. Maybe an additional 100 pages would've helped. I would have also like to read about the three gunas which were absent in the book.Overall, this is a fantastic book to introduce you to Hinduism.

For a short introduction to Hinduism this book feels fairly comprehensive. It is well-illustrated, clearly written, and offers a fairly broad and sufficiently deep introduction to Hinduism. If you are looking for a short introduction text this will suffice, but it may not be the only one you want for the semester (because it is after all fairly short). All in all, however, I found it competent, succinct, and pass along a high recommendation.

Smoke jumpers, those that fight wildfires with specialty training and parachute jumping, is the setting for this story.The story opens with a smoke jumper and her jump partner falling from the sky on a fire. As she looks back at her partner she see's him pull his toggle in the wrong direction, which sends him into the bowels of the fire, where he is killed.The following summer, as the wildfire season begins, there is trouble between the female partner of the jumper that was killed and his dating fling, and her baby.There are several incidents where the smoke jumpers are placed in dangerous situations in and around the base camp. And then a fire is reported in a forest close to base and a murder has occurred.The story continues until the equipment used for fighting fires is tampered with and they are put in danger in a fire.The smoke jumpers continue fighting wildfires with a twist on the final fire.This author again demonstrates her ability to learn the correct language and procedures for fighting wildfires and she completes a love story between firefighting incidents and keeps the readers attention on the characters as they go through this different summer. She also interposesa secondary love story and connects the events so that the reader is rewarded with an exciting story line and is able to follow through the entire book without loosing their place and to remain enthralled with the story line.

Such a refreshing and entertaining reading:1. I've never read a book about smoke jumpers, so I loved getting immersed in their foreign-to-me world.2. The main romance between Rowan & Gull was an absolute delight to read thanks to the lack of clichés. Every now and then I have enjoyed them in romance books, but a couple who communicates their feelings and thoughts will always be a winner for me. No need to use third parties or innecessary denials to stop them from getting their HEA.3. The romance subplot didn't bore me, and it usually does when it's not about the main couple.What stops this from being a perfect reading:The long descriptions about the missions got tiresome. I get being told once or twice about them, but there were many missions, so to read the technical talk over and over and over again was exhausting. (Although thankfully not as much as the one in the Inn BoonsBoro trilogy.)***OVERALLChasing Fire is another Nora Roberts winner. Too bad it isn't part of a series, would've loved to see every one of them getting a HEA like Rowan and Gull.

3.5'Key of Valour' takes us to the last quest to find the third key. It's Zoe's turn and she's gonna have to find the courage to trust her heart and go for what she wants.I had an absolutely wonderful time getting to see Zoe and Brad falling in love even though Zoe did annoy me in the last chapters because she didn't want to accept what she felt (and what Brad felt for her). I felt it took her so long to accept her feelings and it frustrated me. But I loved Brad because he had a lot of patience with her.And speaking about Brad, he was a sweetheart! My favorite parts of this book definitely include his scenes with Simon. It was a pleasure getting to see man and boy loving each other. The only issue I had with one of the scenes is that a couple of dialogues were a copy of one of Nora Robert's books: Sea Swept. It is my favorite book from her. I've read it plenty of times so as soon as I saw the dialogues I knew where it came from. It bothered me and I wish it could've been said different.But keeping that aside, I liked there were barely sexist comments. And I liked seeing more of Flynn, Malory, Dana and Jordan, too.The climax with Kane wasn't as interesting as book 2. I was definitely expecting something bigger. But in the end, I'm just glad the villain was vanquished and Rowena and Pitte got to finally have their HEA. I even cried with that part and it was my favorite moment from the whole book.*OVERALL:The last book in the Key trilogy was an interesting and great conclusion.The series as a whole was a pleasure to read because it has the essence of Nora's oldest series. Sure, I've enjoyed her new ones but there is nothing like her old and classy. There's something about the writing and characters that stand out from the more recent ones.If you're looking for a series about love, friendship, family (and you don't mind a couple of sexist comments here and there) this is the series for you.
