Ben's Revolution: Benjamin Russell and the Battle of Bunker Hill, by Nathaniel Philbrick Wendell Minor

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Acclaimed historian Philbrick (Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War) has penned a Revolution-era history for kids adapted from his adult title Bunker Hill. This historical narrative follows Benjamin Russell, an adolescent in Boston at the dawn of the Revolution. Readers learn about the Boston Tea Party, Isaiah Thomas's radical publications, and the eruption of armed resistance to the British. Philbrick adds nuance to the tale through, for instance, Ben's mixed sentiments about the excitement of revolution and the kindness shown to him by a local British officer. From across the harbor, Ben watches the climactic battle of Bunker Hill, where the outmatched, outnumbered Patriots hold off multiple waves of British attacks before finally withdrawing. Ben is reunited with his family after the battle, and he soon joins Isaiah Thomas as a printer's apprentice. The full-color illustrations are full of bright hues, resulting in pleasing grassy fields, morning light flashing off harbor waters, and brilliantly clad Redcoats. Minor depicts the battlefield with motion and smoky haze, yet free of carnage. A convenient map displays the Boston locales referenced. Educators should note that invented dialogue has been added by the author to move the narrative along. VERDICT A stirring account of the American Revolution, sure to resonate with elementary students.—Jeffrey Meyer, Mount Pleasant Public Library, IA

Review

* “[Philbrick] introduces Benjamin Russell, where he went to school, his part-time apprenticeship at Isaiah Thomas' newspaper, sledding down Beacon Hill, and the British officer who cleaned the cinders from the snow so the boys could sled farther and farther. It is these humanizing touches that make war its own intolerable act. Readers see Benjamin, courtesy of Minor's misty gouache-and-watercolor tableaux, as he becomes stranded outside Boston Neck and becomes a clerk for the patriots. Significant characters are introduced, as is the geography of pre-landfilled Boston, to gain a good sense of why certain actions took place where they did. The final encounter at Breed's Hill demonstrates how a battle can be won by retreating. A crisp historical vignette.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review“Acclaimed historian Philbrick (Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War) has penned a Revolution-era history for kids adapted from his adult title Bunker Hill. . . . Younger advanced readers and budding history buffs will enjoy this account of Benjamin Russell’s youthful exploits.”—Booklist “In one-to-two page chapters, interspersed with Minor’s luxuriant gouache and watercolor illustrations, Philbrick skillfully summarizes the events . . . and effectively contrasts printer Isaiah Thomas’s patriotic fervor with Ben’s boyish preoccupations. . . . Recreates the tension of the hard-fought Battle of Bunker Hill, as seen through Ben’s eyes, and provides a satisfying reunion with his family. . . . I gave this as a gift to my grandson and his parents who own a business near the Bunker Hill Monument. They were excited to receive it, and tell me it has given them a good history lesson

I found it contrived. And I thought it was a terrible example to suggest - not notifying his parents that he was OK. Surely he could have figured a way. Disappointed because I like Philbrick's adult books so much.

It's no secret that I love Revolutionary War history, so it was with a certain amount of delight that I opened up a package from Penguin to discover Ben's Revolution. It's a beautifully written book by Nathaniel Philbrick, which details the life of Benjamin Russell, a real-life figure of the Revolutionary War era. Philbrick walks us through the phases of young Ben's life, beginning with realization that war has occurred, and inadvertently finding his own place within the conflict. Philbrick follows him throughout several key events of the war - e.g. Bunker Hill - until the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the birth of a nation. What's great about Ben's Revolution, is that it's an easily digestible look at a timely and complex piece of American history. By centering the events of the American Revolution around Ben's observation and recognition of them, Philbrick instantly makes the events feel more relatable, particularly for the young reader who may be learning about the Revolutionary War for the first time.Philbrick is also careful to use short sentences and third person omniscient as a narration style, which allows him to not only include references to Ben's personal life, but to also help provide readers looks into what the British are thinking on the eve of war, as well. Though the interludes are brief, it's a nice reminder that there are multiple sides to historical events, and helps reinforce the mentality and need to study those sides, early.Though it is no easy task to parse through several years of battles and conflict, Philbrick manages to do so in a way that is cohesive, and helps draw a definitive line from the beginning of the conflict to the end. With beautiful illustrations that bring history vibrantly to life, this is a book that can't be missed.Highly recommend, and Ben's Revolution will be an asset on bookshelves for any eager young reader.

Benjamin Russell lived in Boston as a boy, witnessed the Boston Tea Party, and helped with the war effort when the British took over Boston. The story is historically accurate and focuses on New England grit when faced with oppression, but more than that I like how the "enemy" was humanized. For example, "The boys cheered when most of the British soldiers fell down, but there were also tears in Ben's eyes. He remembered that winter day when a British officer had kindly fixed the boys' sledding run, and Ben didn't want that officer to die."His apprenticeship with a newspaper was more interesting to me, though, especially since he became one of the leading newspapermen of his time. Children today might not realize that newspapers and letters were the only way people got their news, so newspapers were of vital importance.Wendell Minor's art adds rich detail to the story and I love his dedication: "To every young reader who discovers that the pen is mightier than the sword."

Kids 3, 5, and 7 loved seeing Ben figure out how to get by and fight for his freedom in a world or war and confusion. Great historical story telling.

Amish Christmas at North Star contains four Amish Christmas stories set in North Star, Pennsylvania. The stories are written by Cindy Woodsmall, Amanda Flower, Katie Ganshert, and Emily Clark and Mindy Starns Clark. On November 30, 1990 a blizzard is coming through the area and midwife, Rebekah Schlabach delivers four babies. Twenty-five years later Chase Wellington discovers an article in his mother’s attic on what were called Rebekah’s Babies. Chase believes a follow-up story would make a good article for the North Star Tribune where he is a part-time reporter. Guiding Star by Katie Ganshert takes Chase on a search for the child that disappeared after its birth. It will take Chase and Noelle “Elle” McAllister on a journey to find out what happened twenty-five years ago.Mourning Star by Amanda Flower is an Amish Mystery. Eden Hochstetler is living Sugarcreek, Ohio with her parents. They moved there from North Star, PA. A friend of Eden’s, Isaac Yoder passed away at Yoder Stables. Eden wants to find out what happened to Isaac. She does not believe his death was an accident. Eden with the help of Jesse Yoder, Isaac’s nephew, sets out to find out what happened to her friend.Cindy Woodsmall’s In the Stars is about lost love. Savilla Beiler rejected Kore Detweiler. So Kore moved away to Virginia. He works with Esther and Jacob King on their salvage and decorating business. Business takes him back to North Star and a family emergency keeps him there. Mammi D is injured and she needs someone to watch the Adler kids while she is laid up (their parents are in Uganda adopting a child). Savilla and Kore end up working together to take care of the kids. Will Kore be able to find out why Savilla turned him away?Star of Grace by Mindy Starns Clark and Emily Clark is the last story in the book. Andy Danner left North Star after Nellie Umble broke up with him. Andy has been working in construction in Mississippi. Andy’s little brother, Sam misses Andy and works out a way to bring him home for Christmas. Nellie is very sorry that she broke up with Andy and wants him back. Can Sam get Andy back to town in time for Christmas and keep him there? There is an enjoyable epilogue that ties up all the storylines in the book. All four stories are just wonderful. I loved this book. It will help put you in the mood for Christmas. Amanda Flower’s Mourning Star had a good mystery, enjoyable characters, and some delicious descriptions of fudge. Amish Christmas at North Star is a heartwarming and well-written book. You will not go wrong in reading Amish Christmas at North Star. I give Amish Christmas at North Star 5 out of 5 stars. I liked how all these stories were written by different authors by you would never know it. They all tied together beautifully.I received a complimentary copy of Amish Christmas at North Star from Blogging for Books (and the publisher) in exchange for an honest review.

Guiding Star by Katie GanshertCuriosity gets the best of Englischer Chase Wellington when he investigates the twenty-five-year-old disappearance of an Amish baby. When he finds adventurous Elle McAllister in Iowa will his discoveries upend her world? My thoughts: This was a very sweet romance. I loved Chase. He was a dear, kind, considerate, and smart. Elle was a dear, and as much as she and her adoptive mother imagined where she came from she had never guessed the truth. Beautiful story. Unfinished- but maybe it will be wrapped up at the end of the book...Mourning Star by Amanda FlowerEden Hochstetler slips from her parents’ fudge shop to investigate the death of her friend Isaac. Who is guilty? Isaac’s handsome great nephew Jesse, an angry Englischer, or someone else?My thoughts: This is the first story I ever read by Ms. Flower's. It is a cozy mystery, where Eden and her friend Gina investigates a murder of an Amish man - the story was good. Not what I expected, but very good. I suspected who-dun-it, but hadn't made the connection between suspect to yeah, "he" did it by the time the story ended so it was a bit of surprise to me.In the Stars by Cindy WoodsmallHeartbroken Kore Detweiler avoids North Star after Savilla Beiler rejects his love. But when he is unexpectedly called to return home, he and Savilla must join forces to keep a family together. My thoughts: It was interesting reading Kore and Savilla's story. While a romance it took some cunexpected twists and a lot of anger for these characters to find themselves. I did skim this story a lot, but enjoyed getting reacquainted with characters from another one of Ms. Woodsmall's books.Star of Grace by Mindy Starns Clark and Emily ClarkAndy Danner left North Star to join a new Amish settlement in Mississippi. His little brother devises a scheme to bring Andy home for Christmas and unwittingly unleashes the power of forgiveness in a reclusive widower’s life.My thoughts: This was my favorite story in the collection. I loved Sam and how dedicated he was to t he family and people he loved and how determined he was to reach his goals. And how unselfishly he gave when the need arose. A very sweet story, the best one in this collection. Loved it.My thoughts: First, the disclaimer. "I was bought this book. All opinions are my own." That done, I enjoyed this collection of four Amish stories centered around one birthing center and four babies born the same day, twenty-five years prior. I liked find out how all those babies turned out -- and the first story's strings that were left untied were neatly tied and trimmed by the end of the book.

I enjoyed this YA story. Sure, the plot is a little predictable but it still gets the job done. If you love horses, it’ll be easy to put yourself in Lucy’s shoes and you’ll want the horse saved. The author captured the emotions that come with it: the horse’s fear of humans and enclosures, the MC’s thrill of slowly overriding them, the doubts of the outcome and the worries for the horse’s future to name just a few. In addition, there’s the young cowboy who wants to help both Lucy and Chance and the ones who may get in their way. A light and quick read that I would recommend for all family members (from middle grade to their grandparents and beyond) who share their love of horses.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a fan of similar series, such as Showjumping Dreams and the Loxwood books, I found I really enjoyed a young adult book that featured a Western riding aspect. The plot was believable and the twists kept me interested, and I found I could relate to the characters, especially Lucy, the main protagonist. Who of us hasn't fallen in love with a troubled horse, worried that we would never develop a relationship with them, but continuing to hope that we would one day find ourselves galloping together through the mountains? Highly recommend this book to any who have a love of horses, Western riding, or just plain good ol' storytelling.

For all you horse lovers, this book won't disappoint. Lucy, is a lucky young gal who gets to work on a ranch for the summer. I can totally relate with the characters, they were well developed and interesting. There's an wily horse who needs a touch of love, cowboys, a dash of romance, and great adventure in terms of a horse race. I look forward to and hope there will be more adventures at Red Rock Ranch in the future!

The action starts on page one and doesn't slow down. This author knows how to engage a young adult horse crazy reader from start to finish. You will admire Lucy's determination to follow her heart despite all the risk involved. Throw in a wild horse, a smoking hot guy who lives to ride and a blonde adversary who lives to irritate and you've got a book that's hard to put down.

Loved this book! Read it all in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. From the first few pages I was sixteen again, reliving those wonderful days when my whole world revolved around horses. Great pace, great characters, and plenty of fun plot twists to keep the story moving. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

This is a fun read with a likeable protagonist and supporting cast. I appreciated that the antagonist was not all bad - as characters in YA novels so often can be. A good page-turner and enjoyable read that I have added to my list of recommended horsy books.

I wanted more on this story. It was written well and I really got involved with the characters. I hope there is going to be a sequel to this sweet story. I would love to see Casey and Lucy's future as they become adults and hopefully have a happily ever after.

I lliked this book very much. T errific story line which help my attention. Made it hard to put down. This is a book I would read again.

Brill’s is one of a gazillion recent books that addresses the question, what happened to America? That it’s broken, we all know, even if we don’t always admit it to ourselves. This book, however, really is different. Brill is one of the few authors who has the legal and financial expertise to really get it right. And that he does. The problem is not social, political, racial, or patriarchal (although the latter two are real problems that must be addressed). The problem is economic. In short, the new American aristocracy are the wealthy who continue to elevate themselves above the rest of society financially and who have successfully dug moats around themselves and their children to protect their elite status. It is, in my own words, the commercialization of America. The wealthy in America have successfully constructed a false meritocracy where ‘merit without means’ has grown increasingly difficult. Class mobility, as a result, has declined and fewer and fewer of our youth can expect to live better than their parents. It’s the universal law of unintended consequences. We replaced the old-boy, inherited wealth aristocracy with a true meritocracy. The meritorious among us, however, used their newfound mobility to create a world where class mobility has been commercialized. The children of the already wealthy, as a result, who have access to private schools, tutors, SAT prep classes, violin lessons, and the latest technology, have a material advantage in climbing their own ladder of merit. What distinguishes Brill’s book is that he works harder than most authors on providing solutions, or at least finding and revealing people and institutions who have already made a difference (no, not Trump) and who offer a template for moving forward.Brill is informed across a wide spectrum of topics. He is, first and foremost, however, a journalist and it shows. The prose is easy to read but always backed up with plenty of data. At times, perhaps, just a tad too much. But that’s okay. He, more than most, makes it clear why we are all so disillusioned. This book will make you mad. And it should. Our politicians are dialing for dollars while Washington burns. And Brill has the connections and the writing skills to bring the heat into your living room.A very good book that no one will want to pick up a second time. But that’s okay. Sometimes we need a good whack to make sure we’re still awake.

By the time they reach the end of this excellent book, readers may wonder that anything is still working in America for anyone other than the well-educated, the well-connected, and those wealthy enough to retreat to their financial and gated enclaves. (For examples, read the real estate section of the Friday edition of the Wall Street Journal.) After cataloging the depressing and interlocking shortcomings of American society over the last 50 years, Brill is still optimistic about the future, and includes many examples of people taking personal responsibility to foster the fading common good. Those who are more pessimistic than the author will recall that it took a vestigial socialist tradition, a Great Depression, and the Second World War to move America away from earlier tailspins. More recently, the organized opposition of millions of Americans to the Vietnam war failed to end that senseless conflict. Today millions of people are shocked by the level of gun violence in our country, but cannot organize around this issue to effect real change. I applaud the efforts of Brill and the many people who are challenging the system with real alternatives, but I fear that it will take a seismic cataclysm to relieve the present persistent nightmare.

A fantastic account of every court battle, regulation, and congressional act since the 50s that's lead America to where it is today; the country with the most most wealth inequality in the developed world. Reading this, it's clear how my generation of millenials was left with nothing but the scraps of a dying nation.

In this extensively researched book, Steve Brill concludes that “the country has gone into a tailspin since the post-war era” with, among other things, increased income inequality, a deteriorating infrastructure, a high poverty rate, mediocre health care and student achievement and a dysfunctional and money corrupted Congress. He then goes into great detail to describe how this has come about and what some people are trying to do about it.One of his key findings is that meritocracy has become the new aristocracy. In other words, top students from the top law schools began to enjoy enormous incomes by working with big businesses to generate favorable legislation and regulations and devise ways to work around tax and other laws.Brill devotes several pages to what he calls the Greening of the First Amendment which has enabled businesses to spend considerable money in political campaign and requires legislators to spend substantial time raising campaign funds. He describes instances where the enormous amount spent on lobbying has prevented appropriate regulation and legislation.Brill laments that businesses that have been found to be serious law breakers are able to get by with fines that for many are just considered a cost of doing business while no action is taken against the executives who authorized or were aware of the unlawful activities.Overall, I found most of Brill’s comments to be appropriate.Brill notes organizations trying to change things for the better, including the Bipartisan Policy Center, Better Markets, Open Secrets and Peter Edelman with Georgetown’s poverty and inequality center.Brill ends with surprising optimism. “Things may get worse before they get better,” he says. But “Americans …are going to decide enough is enough.”

Steven Brill is a brilliant man & a superb writer - I have read everything he has written. I like to get up early & read when it is nice & quiet, but I must say this book was difficult to read more than a chapter at a time because it is so depressing. It set the tone for my day as negative. Brill delineates the greed & corruption of our congress & the business world. His facts are true & that makes it all the more disheartening. And most disheartening of all is that the only hope he provides are in the last 3 pages of the book! How I wish it was not so.

I can imagine this book took a lot of courage to write! So if I see one more review saying that it doesn't go into enough detail I will die! Also she had a only 5th grade education and was living in a backyard for 18 years so excuse her for not having the best grammar or writing skills. I personally liked that it was written in her own words. I felt I was hearing the story as told by 11 year old Jaycee. It makes me see her perspective on what happened through an 11 year old's eyes. If one is reading the book and actually comprehending what Jaycee talks about, animals were what kept her going. So if all she talks about is cats it's because that's all she had for so long.A few reviews claimed the book was repetitive, there are times that's true but instead of thinking of that negatively and bashing Jaycee's writing abilities, I see it as a recovering woman trying to piece together a story of 18 years of captivity. A story in which people begged and pried into her privacy just to get. This book also aided in her healing she wanted to write in her own words she explains why if you read the preface!!!!This book was a hard read but an excellent insight on Jaycee's perseverance, strength and her unbelievable ability to survive and overcome a horrific event. I never went into reading this book thinking it would contain superior grammar and writing style. I applaud her for sharing her story. (She also isn't a bad writer) I recommend this book for sure!

The last week or so I've been on a kick of reading either true crime novels about girls that have been kidnapped or in the case of, this book, when the victims themselves have written their own story in the form of memoirs or a book. I find that I prefer the accounts that are written by the survivors of the kidnappings; they seem more honest and you know what your reading actually happened to the author. Sometimes true crime novels just feel like they are listing all the facts they can find to include in their books. While I do value accuracy reading the same thing three times throughout the book and knowing its the same fact just worded differently gets really frustrating and boring to be honest. This book follows the life of Jaycee Dugard starting around the time she was first taken from her parents. And follows her throughout the next 18 years as Philip and his wife Nancy make her change her name, as well as Philip raping her every two to three days. They tell her that they took her so that Philip can use her for his pedophilic urges and in this way he won't have to kill or rape someone else to fulfill his twisted needs. He (Philip) also gets Jaycee pregnant twice both times she has girls and when she becomes a Mother it strengthens something in her because now she has two little lives depending on her to protect them and keep them safe.It also really struck me how the abductor's wife Nancy was so involved in taking Jaycee who was only eleven at the time; I mean what kind of female would do that to another woman much less a pre-teen girl; I cannot even imagine being that evil. This story kept me enthralled and interested for the entire book; it does have some graphic details so if that would bother you or if bringing up unwanted abuse from your own past then although its a good book I would not recommend you read it.Jaycee definitely has her own style of writing; she even hints in the beginning of the book that her writing style is vastly different from the norm. I love that she has her own voice and she deserves so much more than what that evil couple did to her. I gave the book four stars instead of five because at places it was really jumpy, and things got repeated a lot...other than that I really enjoyed the book. (Maybe enjoyment isn't the right word;) I'll just say I respect that Jaycee had the courage to write it, and to continue to try to live a normal happy life with her girls. If you like true crime novels or are just looking for a change of pace; and something that will really rock you to your core than I would definitely recommend this book.

I cried. A lot. As a victim of teenage abduction this really touched my heart knowing I am not alone. You are an amazing and strong woman, Jaycee. Thank you for sharing this with us. I can imagine it was not easy.

Wow!! Thanks to Kindle, I was able to download the book at about one in the morning, and it's now seven in the morning. I have not read a book in one sitting, or in one night for years!People who saw the ABC interview with Diane Sawyer saw how warm and lovely this young lady is, and her book is like the interview but a hundred times warmer and more personal.Jaycee's story is refreshing in that it's written by her, and not from a co-author. Much of the book are pages and pages taken from the actual journal entries she wrote while in her backyard prison. You can tell that her journal entries read in much same way as the rest of the book, so in a sense, the entire book is a continuation of her journaling and her ongoing mission in life to help others. For example, it's hard to tell when you're reading from her old journal entries from her more current writings of when she's authoring this book. It's really all one voice, and you definitely get a feel for how her voice resonates through. Some readers on comment sections of news sites have mentioned they don't want to read the book due to graphic scenes being portrayed. Yes, these scenes are there, but written in a very mature way that I think people should really read. The book doesn't focus on these scenes, as rather the book focuses on simply sharing her story and conveying her sense of hope that's still beaming today. But the sexual abuse scenes are important to all of America as they describe horrifying sexual acts that often go by generic terms like 'rape' and 'molestation.' But what do those mean? Jaycee paints a much clearer picture, and in doing so, acts as the voice for all the victims of sexual abuse that can't share their story. In America, sexual abuse is something that gets pushed under the rug, or punished. It's like there's no in between. Jaycee didn't know what the word rape meant while the act was being done to her, and I remember when I was 11 (I was also born in 1980 like Jaycee), I didn't know what the word rape meant either. I don't think I learned what the word meant until I was 13 or 14. Perhaps if more people learn about sexual abuse, and what it actually entails, then more can be done to protect innocent victims. And more importantly, when people realize what goes on behind closed doors of rapists, perhaps there won't be parole after just a few years for somebody who had already raped a woman for eight hours straight in a warehouse. Jaycee does an excellent job showing how her captor is a repeat offender, one that therapy cannot solve. Jaycee goes on to describe the failure of the therapists that her captor visited, and how they enabled him more than anything by allowing him to make excuses rather than be accountable for his behavior. With all this being said, this book is probably not for young teenagers to read by themselves, as Jaycee shares vivid accounts of sexual abuses that happened to her; abuses she didn't even know the names for at the time. Cautiously I note, the entire book would be a great one for a parent and teenager to read and discuss together, with parental guidance on parts of the book that are tough to read or perhaps need proper perspective put into place. (Parents, you must read the book first, as you're the one to judge if the book is appropriate or not for your teenager). In my opinion, I think it's a subject that needs to be talked about more, even if it's difficult to read, but of course, that's up to parental discretion. The only part I found that was hard to read in the book were the journal entries that talk about her thoughts and reactions to her captor's ongoing talk about Angels and how her captor believed the Angels control people. I don't know how many pages in the regular book, but it was a few pages on the Kindle. While it's tough to read, it illuminates just how unimaginably tougher it would be to live in that kind of manipulative situation on a daily basis. What's also tough but enlightening to read is how much compassion she has for all the animals she cared for. Through all the events taking place upon her rescue, she even asks a couple officers if they can check on her animals and make sure they're okay, at which time the officers made sure to find them and get them temporary foster homes. The irony that develops through her selfless caring often mirrored her own reality: For example, Jaycee starts feeling really badly about one of her cats being locked up with her all the time, and feeling guilty for wanting the cat's company, she shares how a shed is no place for a cat. Yet she never shows any kind of self-pity on her own situation...all you see is your strength and courage.I just can't believe these things happened to an 11 year old girl. You really get a sense into the manipulation of the captors (I refuse to say their names) and how through the horror of everything, Jaycee completely shines light throughout her memoir. It's like there's not even a 'hate' bone in her body -- she's an inspiration to us all; that love and hope conquers no matter. And the best thing is that the entire memoir is written so warmly, it's like Jaycee is sharing her story with you directly at the dinner table. And she goes on to share, now that she and her family are free, something very important to her: The simple daily act of cooking great foods and eating at the dinner table. One last thing, in her journal entries she mentions her goals and plans for her future once she becomes free -- so many of them she's actually doing!
