Beautiful, well put together book. Larger than I expected, this is a coffee table book. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in this book either for themselves or received as a gift. It's very informative and absorbing to look at. Highly recommend.

Best book I have ever seen on the design of an extraordinarily wide range of works from 1850 to the present! Extraordinary photos, wonderful biographies of key designers, clear and intelligent grouping of works into eras and styles. Awesome diversity, including almost every aspect of items shaping our lives: furniture, lights, appliances, tableware, transportation, decorative pottery, cameras, clocks, fabrics, wallpaper, posters, typewriters, jewelry, radios, coffee/tea kettles, and on and on seemingly endlessly. All are clearly documented by time and designer, with a wonderful separate A to Z compendium of designer biographies at the very end of the book. If you like design of everyday objects, you will love this book.

The book is so well organized and pictures are delightful! Definitely a must for anyone interested in the history of design. Most enjoyable coffee table book.

If you love the styles of the 20th century, this book is an amazing visual trip!! Great pictures, so much color, interesting info!! I love it!

The dates on some of these movements are a bit off. Art Deco is a very French style - it originated in France around 1909 - yet much of the Art Deco section is dominated by the German inspired streamline design which was promoted heavily by American Designers. Also the dates 1919 - 1939 should be 1909 or 1910 - 1939. Alastair Duncan's book "Art Deco furniture" describe this perfectly - " The First World War is generally seen to be the dividing line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco furniture styles, but the latter was in fact conceived in the pre - war transitional years of 1905 to 1910. Many furniture pieces accepted as pure Art Deco - especially pieces by Gray, Ruhlmann, Iribe and Follot- were designed before the outbreak of the war (WW1).... The movement cannot therefore be rigidly defined within the years 1920 and 1930, as it usually is. Its inception was earlier as was its decline". Also 1880 is a bit too early for Art Nouveau - it wasn't a unified movement till the early 1890s . Better dates to describe mid century modern would be 1945 to 1965, ending it at 1960 is too early. I know it's not an in depth book , but I think these dates - especially for Art Deco - are very important in terms of understanding these movements or styles.

Gave this to my daughter-in-law for Hanukkah. She loved it!

I have just started reading this book, and am already fascinated by it. I am, by nature, always curious about ancient history and/or myths/legends such as Prester John. Whether or not he actually ever existed is anyones guess. However, this will definitely be a 'good read'. The author, Nicholas Jubber, shows his own incredibly wonderful sense of humor from the beginning. I would highly recommend this for anyone who has an inquisitive mind and enjoys exploring, via books, a long ago mysterious person who, whether in fact of myth, sparked the interest of all and sundry including Pope Alexander III in 1177.

Many interesting facts, told in an entertaining and engaging manner! Most people don't know much about Prester John, but he was an immensely significant figure in the middle ages, even though there is little proof that he ever existed. His mythical existence influenced history quite remarkably.

Yes, the syntax can be so twisted up as to strangle any presumably intended meaning, and yes the similes and metaphors can be obscure, impossible to comprehend, or just plain below par, and yes it does really help if one knows a LOT about the Crusades, and has travelled in Turkey, Syria, and Ethiopia, but Jubber does come up with some quite funny bon mots, and the section on the Sudan  is great.  And the whole read is worth it for the section on the Palestinians vs the Israelies which he gets spot on.  It will linger, the scenes and well painted characters, in your mind.  Lots of fascinating historical anecdote.  Along with a very sympathetic narrator.  Recommended.

Funny and informative about halfway through. After that it was just more of the same. Don't buy unless your idea of fun is watching grass grow!

The participants in this mission, Nicholas Jubber and Mike Hirst set out to deliver a letter written by Pope Alexander III in 1177 to Prester John.On their journey to deliver (albeit 824 years late) Nicholas Jubber manages to combine historical knowledge and legend with contemporary reality in a way which is simultaneously eccentric, amusing and highly informative.There are a number of different journeys being depicted in this novel, and they are each worth reading about. Read it as a contemporary travelogue on a medieval mission, read it as a commentary on some of the issues that are as topical today as they were when the original 12th century missive was written. You choose!I recommend this to anyone with an interest in the legendary Prester John, as well as to anyone who likes reading about the travails of travel.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

This is a terrible book that could be a good book. The IDEA for the book was solid, and some of the historical tidbits are interesting.It COULD have been an entertaining quest, but there is one enormous problem: the author is a pretentious, self-centered, pseudo-intellecutal child with a very high opinion of himself and the most irritating writing style known to man. Don't waste your time with this book unless you enjoy being patronized.Shame.

An excellent book concerning the story of the quest to find the fabled Prestor John and the Garden of Eden. Great book at a great price with fast ship, thanks.

Like all of Brad Whisnant's books, this one makes a complex system easy to grasp. If you want to learn Master Tung points and be using them this week in your clinic, this is the book for you. Brad gives great clinical experience about the points and how to use them for the issues we see regularly as opposed to some of the old indications for the points like scrofula or leprosy. If you could only use the points in this book you could successfully treat many many of the usual issues we see in our clinics. Highly recommended!

This is an essential guide, containing much otherwise hard-to-obtain information about visiting the park, e.g., whether and where cellphones work there, tips on how to score a room in the busy season, etc. Get it and consult it before you go. It will make your stay a lot easier in a place about 5 million visit each year. This 2018 edition has important new material, such as changes in place names. Thus the former Curry Village is now Half-Dome Village.

Bought this book on the recommendation of others. it is the "essential" guidebook for Yosemite. You will find the book sold in the bookstores in the park but it's much wiser to get it ahead of time so you can plan your trip more carefully before you go. Yosemite Valley is an hour from the south entrance and you need to understand how to manage your time, your driving and the places you want to visit. This guidebook will do it very well for you. If you only have room for one book in your belongings, this is the one to take. I got an earlier version that was still very relevant. A must have for first time visitors to Yosemite.

This is a tiny book and I feel like they try to cover too much. The book has a little information on trails, has some very nice charts, a little information on activities (last revised 1997), a little information on history, a little information on weather, and a little information on native species but none of it is very complete. Because of it's small size they're unable to go into detail in any of the sections and as a result you're following many of the articles to other pages across the book. I was lured in by the low price of the book second hand but I feel like it was too much given the amount and quality of the information I received.

I am a native Californian and have gone to Yosemite many times. This is the best guidebook for the national park. One Amazon review wrote that it was "all over the place" but they must not know that the park is HUGE so the guidebook is categorized by south, middle and north. Besides lodging in the national park, it also lists exclusive (almost secret) lodging that is available just outside the park as well as more common places to stay for which ever direction you are driving from. The "Best Bets" tips for hikes, places to see, etc. are truly accurate and great advice. I highly recommend this book for anyone traveling to Yosemite - don't leave home without it! It also has detailed information on the wildlife and history and even little things like comparisons of the worlds tallest waterfalls and where Yosemite's fall on that list. The book is compact and easily packable, even in a backpack. (For a definitive "hikers guide" with topography of each trail, etc. then that would be another book.)

Hi All, I read this book from cover to cover and highlighted the entire time. I went with my friends Amy and Dave to Yosemite in May 2001. We had my son (3 at the time) and their two kids (2 and 8 months at the time) in tow. I wanted to be ready with information which I never really did get to give out a tour guide as I had planned(funny thing about kids, they have other ideas of what to do in the car other than hear all about Yosemite and John Muir).The book came with a sheet of updated info which I did copy into my copy of the guide. I was directed to write for a better map than is provided in the book. Well, I never received it...ever! That was my only disappointment. I would like to see the Yosemite with kids section expanded for future travelers with small kids. I recommend you get this guide!

This is the best guidebook to Yosemite I've seen. The guide is well written, easy to read and full of useful and interesting facts about visiting the park. Mr. Medley obviously knows his subject, and his insightful and humorous observations make this an enjoyable read. Not only does it include how-to information for visiting the park, but also sections on Yosemite history, geology and wildlife. If you are planning to visit Yosemite, make this your first purchase.

Jonathan Gennick is an O'Reilly & Associates editor specializing in database and programming titles. Prior to joining O'Reilly, Jonathan amassed some 17 years of programming and database management experience. During the latter part of his career he specialized in relational database programming, and more recently in database management. Jonathan got his start with relational database systems in 1990, first working with Ingres, and later with Digital's Rdb software. In 1994 Jonathan made the leap to Oracle, and is now often found writing about it. I enjoyed this book. It described features of SQL Plus that I did not even know it had. I go to this book when there is something in SQL Plus that I was not sure about (setting or parm) and I am always able to find the answer.

A must have if you do any kind of queries with Oracle.

Oracle SQL Plus: The Defnitive GuideJonthan Gennick1-56592-578-5This book is great for those using the SQL Plus tool. I use SQL Plus for Oracle 8 and 9. This book covers up to 8i but I have not had any trouble using the commands in 9i. I have not tried the commands listed on 10g yet. The book is easy to use since the topics are split into reasonable chapters and the font is large enough to read with the book beside the keyboard. I also like the chapters that list commonly used items in tables. One example would be the chapter listing the user_ and all_ views. The chapter covering the SET command is one I use frequently. This book is fairly specific to the usage of SQL Plus itself and does not delve too deeply into the inner workings of the Oracle database, but it does have examples in SQL query language and PL/SQL stored procedures. If one is looking for a book on SQL itself, I recommend another title. If one needs a book on SQL Plus, get this one.

The glories of the command line. SQLPlus [I am not going to write that irritating asterix] is an acknowledgment of the reality that for many large computer programs and operating systems, a command line utility is vital. The book explains this for the specific instance of hooking to Oracle's database. It is meant as a definitive reference. Showing every command, often accompanied by example code.For an Oracle DBA, a good acquaintance with SQLPlus is probably mandatory. From the book, you can see how to quickly interrogate the database and get results in various useful paginated formats. Plus, and vitally, you can see how to build script files that can be run, where these files encode your experience in amassing customised sequences of commands specific to your needs. Exactly analogous to batch files in most operating systems, and just as useful.Along those lines, SQLPlus is conceptually not that hard. When using Oracle, it is often far more important, and harder, to design optimal tables for a given problem.

I had bought this text a few years ago to learn SQL. Little did I know then that SQL Plus is a "sand box" that contains SQL. Needless to say that I was disappointed and had to shelf this book.However, after reading an introductory book on SQL and writing lots of code, I revisited this text and found it to be quite useful.In summary, this should not be used by SQL novices. This book teaches "SQL Plus" and not SQL per se. Once, you have learnt the language, this book will come handy to1, execute sql queries (by scripting)2, format the report3, set up the development environment4, to discover the database5, and much much moreOne reason for not assigning five stars is the lack of ease when it comes to downloading the sample code and installing it on my machine.

Jonathan Gennick and co did a good job here. This "Oracle SQL Plus: The Definitive Guide" would be appreciated by most users, although that advanced SQL users who thirst for a unique guidance, having understood the elementary basics of SQL are its primary target. The medium-sized book boasts of updated and revised information whose accuracy are indisputable. Its methodology is as well, dynamic. The pattern of this book is such that tries to turn difficult issues into entertaining ones. It is worth its asking price.

Well written, plenty of examples, very easy to read and follow. As someone who is new to SQL*Plus, I appreciated that. Once I got things installed and running, it was easy to get right into iSQL*Plus (running SQL commands through a browser interface) - really cool. The chapter on Create HTML Reports was very nice as well.I found this book very helpful.
