My son was looking at getting into the IT career field. Working in this demanding profession requires certification levels to demonstrate to any employer that you have the necessary knowledge and skills they are demanding. This book covers the material that is on the first tests towards getting CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certified.

I was using various methods of studying (IT University online videos, online guides, etc.) and some areas were just explained with little to no examples used. The cert guide is an awesome supplement while studying. It does help to watch some videos and purchase a lab to practice as well, but this is a must!

I am halfway into the book after 3 weeks of studying. I like the chapter layout and the authors methods of explaining the material for the CCNA INCD1 test. I am glad I made the purchase and are satisfied with my purchase. I would also recommend it to others trying to study and pass the CCNA. Good luck with your test!

This book is an excellent resource for preparing for the ICND1 exam - it covers all of the exam objectives thoroughly and is explained in a very clear but comprehensive way. The hardback version comes with a pretty cool Pearson test engine, which is a handy way of validating if you're ready for the exam, plus a network simulator "Lite" version. This is really just a demo to entice you to buy the full simulator, but its actually pretty good. It is like an ugly, slightly less polished version of Packet Tracer. Still, pretty nice as a little bonus feature with this book. Would definately recommend this book.

I purchased this book (kindle version) with very limited Cisco experience. I had a decent networking background (i have my MCSA, but no real world experience in network engineering or administration), but not a lot. This book was excellent. the author does a GREAT job at explaining the concepts of each chapter in detail. When showing configurations, he will talk about the principal of the configuration, show how it is done, with the output, then explain why you saw the output and why it works the way it does. I purchased this book, a lab book (something like 101 labs for CCNA) and got a copy of packet tracer. I probably averaged 60-90 minutes of study, 4-5 days most weeks. It took me about 5 weeks to get through the material of the book. After that, i went through and reviewed the questions at the beginning and end of each chapter and did some labs. I took the test another 3 weeks later and scored an 850 on my first try. I am going to purchase the ICND2 book by this author later tonight, and start on the material this week. This is an EXCELLENT book for someone with limited networking background that wants to learn the basics of Cisco Internetworking.There is also a LARGE emphasis on subnetting. This is because you NEED to know subnetting to pass any cisco test. Take your time to review the practice questions at the beginning and end of each subnetting chapter, as well as in the appendices. They are awesome, and explain the answers, and how to get there, in great detail.

Clear, concise information passed on by the author in a manner that is nowhere near as dry as most cert guides i have read iin the past.

I purchased this book because I am taking an online Cisco class and thought it would be great to have it up front instead of reading online. I have no Cisco experience what so ever. I have already read the first four chapters and I feel the author does a great job of explaining things. Very Very fast shipping. I loved Designing BSD Rootkits (DBR) by Joseph Kong, and I'm not even a kernel hacker. Rather, I'm an incident responder and FreeBSD administrator. This book is directly on target and does not waste the reader's time. If you understand C and want to learn how to manipulate the FreeBSD kernel, Designing BSD Rootkits is for you. Peer into the depths of a powerful operating system and bend it to your will!DBR covers much of the same sorts of material found in the earlier Rootkits: Subverting the Windows Kernel by Greg Hoglund and James Butler, except Kong's book is all about FreeBSD. I actually read the Windows text first, but found Kong's more direct language and examples easier than the Hoglund/Butler text. After reading DBR I have a stronger understanding of each of the main chapters' techniques, i.e., kernel modules, hooking, direct kernel object manipulation, kernel object hooking, run-time kernel memory patching, and detection mechanisms. I particularly liked the author showing his sample rootkit's effectiveness against Tripwire, simply to demonstrate his methods.DBR follows another tenet of great books: it credits previous work. Several times in the text Kong says where he learned a technique or what code he's modifying to do his bidding. This should serve as an example to other technical authors. Kong also does not treat his subject matter as a dark art practiced by people in long black coats at Def Con. He is professional and mentions where certain techniques like run-time kernel memory patching are used by commercial operating systems for "hot patching," as happens with Windows.I have nothing bad to say about this book, although to get the absolute full learning experience it helps to know C programming, some assembly, and FreeBSD kernel internals. The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System by McKusick and Neville-Neil (another excellent book) is helpful preparatory reading. The fact that Kong provided all of his source code for download is also very much appreciated. Bravo! I look forward to your next book.

Here is where all learned technics finally come all together.So the reader dabbles with the author from an initial "simple" idea of bypassing an HIDS from one issue to the next. First the system call is hooked, so technically its kind of working, but then we realize that in order to make it perfect we need to hide the just created file (which contains the execution redirection routine). So the next obvious step is to hide the file so we dont leave a footprint on the system, just to realize that we need to hide the KLD (Dynamic Kernel Linker). So now everything is hidden but we forgot about the change of the /sbin directories access/ modification and change time, so we have to go after that too...Its technically very interesting to learn how the author approaches the issues involved in order to avoid being detected by the HIDS or commands the user might use. That the author is technically on top of things is also shown f.e. by some info included in the book which is already referring to FreeBSD 7.To get the most out of the book you ideally have programming knowledge of C, assembly etc. and debugging software systems. So I think its most valuable to system administrators, developers and security consultants.

This would be a 5-star book, if not for the fact that it uses AT&T syntax for ASM. Now, I get that *nix uses AT&T by default, but it is, in my not so humble opinion, stupid. Pretty much any tool you would ever want to use has the option of using Intel syntax, which is much more readable, and easier to understand. Simply put, AT&T syntax is the thing that should not be. Honestly, I don't think I've ever met an ASM dev, reverse engineer, or anyone else who prefers AT&T, and the author's decision to use said syntax seems to me like some kind of twisted torture method, akin to waterboarding a man with orange juice, immediately after he brushes his teeth.@biebsmalwareguy

I teach a Bible Study class, most recently we have looked at selecting a scriptural passage pertinent to our petitions and creating a prayer of our own based on the scriptural passage. This particular Concordance is large enough to easily read, complete enough to be helpful and compact enough not to weigh heavily to tote around. I use several different reference books. This one appealed to all the individuals in my class and they purchased copies for themselves. They will use them. I think this is one you should consider buying and using. I also have different age groups in the class and they all liked this one.

I purchased this item for a prisoner in a local jail where I volunteer as a Eucharistic Minister. The prisoner was asking where could he get one so I decided to buy one from him. I did get to speak to him and he said it was exactly what he was looking for. I did not tell him where I purchased it however.

For those who may not know, a concordance is essentially an index for the bible. This is not an exhaustive concordance that lists every word of the bible and where it can be found. Rather it is concise. The decision making is highly competent, and I doubt anyone using this concordance would find it lacking. It is helpful for both scholars and lay people when reading the bible.This is the concordance for the NAB (New American Bible), the most common translation in use for Roman Catholics in the United States. There is also a concise concordance available for the NRSV by the same editor. I have them both. Both are excellent.I would love a good concordance for the RSV (my personal favorite translation), but thus far have been unable to find one. If anyone knows of one, please free to leave a comment letting me know where I can get a good concordance for the RSV.[Added in July 2007]To those who may be interested, I just found a concordance for the RSV that looks good: The Oxford Concise Concordance to the Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible

The print in this book is miniscule! One would have to use a magnifying glass to see the entries, and reading the explanations is impossible. They tried to cram too much into too few pages!

I purchased the hard cover version and upon opening the cover, I hear a somewhat distressing ripping sound - oh the book was pretty much brand new (despite being purchased as a used book) so I had to break it in! Scary, I was afraid I was tearing the book! :)It's very well done. Tight, crisp binding, large enough I don't need to squint at the printing, and appears to have everything I was looking for at the moment (although, as others have mentioned, it is a concise concordance, not an exhaustive.) Basically, like having an abridged dictionary versus having the entire Oxford English Dictionary (the one that's almost bigger than my bed :)Should be quite handy as I do research. BTW, although this book is keyed for NABRE,it can be used with other bible versions (more or less, unless they diverge significantly, such as the Douay-Rheims, perhaps.)Good value for a bible research tool.

Helpful for bible study. But watch out-VERY SMALL PRINT. If you have vision issues look elsewhere. Well made book and durable. Easily carried with standard sized bible.

Just got it in today. Already it helped me in what I was looking for. Being a Catholic edition makes all the difference in the world.

It's better than I expected and foresee using it in religious education program. I would definitely recommend it! Delivery was excellent!

WAAAAAAAAAYYY too longwinded. Gives you a history on every single person Bob Marley ever walked past on the street and then say "Bob toured Europe for 2 years", What??? How about a little more on that instead of the constant name-dropping? This is also the expanded version with more content, which is just worse in every way (I have read both versions). I suppose if you are a historian and not a music-lover you'll appreciate this more than I.

In the 1960's at the confluence of the streams of Jamaican independence and the messianic Rastafarian religion, there came a once in a lifetime musical genius who was born, if not in a stable, then in similarly unpromising surroundingss in the mountains of the Jamaican hinterland.This is a very detailed book that explains a great deal about Bob Marley's background and career. Now I can tell you what a "goverment yard in Trenchtown" (from the lyrics of No Woman, No Cry) means and I know what Duppy Conqueror means. I did not know these things before.This is certainly not a fan biography, or even a hagiography. In fact Marley does not even come across as a particularly likeable or admirable person. Perhaps there is a reason for this. I have a couple of CDs that have interviews with Bob Marley. It seems to me that Marley was not particularly articulate in person, and that what he had to say was all said in his songs. The author had many interviews with Marley in his lifetime, but none of them seem to have been very profound.There is something about the style of the author that I don't particularly like, a certain like of directness or reference points, if you like. In a way he admits this in appendixes in which he says that he really has no way of telling what parts of much of the material he was told in interviews is true--so he just quotes it all, and lets you decide for yourself.In the end it seems to me that White piles up lots and lots of data, but we don't learn much about Bob Marley the man. Maybe in the end the Natural Mystic eludes all attemps to pin him down. But the book does give tons of background information that helps to understand his music, and even the particular events in Marley's life that inspired the lyrics of certain songs.The book is definitely worth having, but the true essence of Bob Marley lies in his music, which, fortunately we can all still enjoy today.

as a fan of Bob Marley's I was interested in learning about his life and relationships; what inspired him to write certain songs, etc. Instead, I got a well documented look at the legal wrangling, the murders and exhaustive commentary on Jamaica's socio-economic standing. After I read it I didn't feel as though I knew the real Bob Marley -- but I got a hell of a history lesson!

I was so looking forward to reading Catch a Fire, the Life of Bob Marley by Timothy White, but truthfully it turned out to be a constant struggle. Timothy White is a font of information, rather than a good story-teller and that is a real shame.The beginning of the book we are given lengthy lessons in the origins of the Rastafari religion, historic background on the island of Jamaica, an explanation about reggae music and how it developed and a detailed account of how Haile Selassie came into power in Ethiopia which explained his relationship to King Solomon of Biblical fame. And then on page 60, we began to learn about Robert Nestor Marley's parentage and early life.Throughout the book there were many interesting stories and tidbits of Marley's life including some quite fantastical supernatural stories. We learn that Marley's white father took him and placed him with a stranger for a year in his early life and his mother couldn't find him. We learn about his maternal grandfather, Omeriah who was a leader in his rural community who was an herbalist and able to communicate with spirits as a"Myalman -a person who possessed the knowledge and the power to deflect the machination of 0beah and to heal with folk medicine."But throughout the book, the stories is interrupted with so much background information that the story of Marley's life fails to flow and unfurl in a fluent way and the facts themselves become irrelevant and confused in the readers mind.To make matters worse the end isn't the end, but another 100 pages have been added since the books publication in 1983. These pages in the rambling and random manner of the previous 300 detail the lives of Bob's loved ones and family after his death and the legal battles which have been fought over publishing and recording rights.I truthfully would have loved to read a concise and flowing account of Bob Marley's life, but this book did not provide that.

This book is more than just a biography of the late Bob Marley. It has a lot to offer the reader.Jamaican history and the history of the Rastafarian religion are covered in detail. It's also a ghost story, where as the author tells us how the believe in the supernatural, influences everyday Jamaican life.Marley, of course is the central character in the narrative. The other characters are highly interesting also. Bob's mother and father (the word father is used loosely) are central characters of the story, as are the member of the Wailers and his faithful wife, RitaI highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Marley, the Caribbean or Reggae music.RIP Bob

This is my 4th copy! Lost one! Gave two away! Keeping this one! The cover is new!

Delivery was very fast. It seemed as if I had just ordered it and bang, there it was! The book is great! It tells of the human touch behind that great music. I also had no clue as to the origins of Rastafarianism until I read the book. All in all, a well worth it purchase. Extremely interesting and enlightening!

Beautiful, well put together book. Larger than I expected, this is a coffee table book. I don't think anyone would be disappointed in this book either for themselves or received as a gift. It's very informative and absorbing to look at. Highly recommend.

Best book I have ever seen on the design of an extraordinarily wide range of works from 1850 to the present! Extraordinary photos, wonderful biographies of key designers, clear and intelligent grouping of works into eras and styles. Awesome diversity, including almost every aspect of items shaping our lives: furniture, lights, appliances, tableware, transportation, decorative pottery, cameras, clocks, fabrics, wallpaper, posters, typewriters, jewelry, radios, coffee/tea kettles, and on and on seemingly endlessly. All are clearly documented by time and designer, with a wonderful separate A to Z compendium of designer biographies at the very end of the book. If you like design of everyday objects, you will love this book.

The book is so well organized and pictures are delightful! Definitely a must for anyone interested in the history of design. Most enjoyable coffee table book.

If you love the styles of the 20th century, this book is an amazing visual trip!! Great pictures, so much color, interesting info!! I love it!

The dates on some of these movements are a bit off. Art Deco is a very French style - it originated in France around 1909 - yet much of the Art Deco section is dominated by the German inspired streamline design which was promoted heavily by American Designers. Also the dates 1919 - 1939 should be 1909 or 1910 - 1939. Alastair Duncan's book "Art Deco furniture" describe this perfectly - " The First World War is generally seen to be the dividing line between Art Nouveau and Art Deco furniture styles, but the latter was in fact conceived in the pre - war transitional years of 1905 to 1910. Many furniture pieces accepted as pure Art Deco - especially pieces by Gray, Ruhlmann, Iribe and Follot- were designed before the outbreak of the war (WW1).... The movement cannot therefore be rigidly defined within the years 1920 and 1930, as it usually is. Its inception was earlier as was its decline". Also 1880 is a bit too early for Art Nouveau - it wasn't a unified movement till the early 1890s . Better dates to describe mid century modern would be 1945 to 1965, ending it at 1960 is too early. I know it's not an in depth book , but I think these dates - especially for Art Deco - are very important in terms of understanding these movements or styles.

Gave this to my daughter-in-law for Hanukkah. She loved it!
