Review

"Diane throws open the doors of the root cellar and shines a strong beam of light on this subterranean wonderland. From burdock and beets to rutabagas and radishes (and beyond), she works through this often overlooked realm with inspired recipes and illuminating reference material. The word that keeps coming to mind: finally! - a book that helps me understand the real potential of these culinary outliers." -- Heidi Swanson, author of Super Natural Every Day and 101Cookbooks.com"Diane Morgan's latest book illuminates the culinary underworld in the most marvelous way, allowing roots, rhizomes, tubers, and corms to bask in the limelight. Diane's kitchen prowess elevates lowly root vegetables to (well-deserved) exalted menu status. While lotus root, tubers, and yams are staples in my own Japanese kitchen, mostly for savory dishes, thanks to Diane, I discovered the sweet wonders of Lotus Root Upside-Down Cake and the piquant pleasures of purple potatoes with smoked trout. Kansha, appreciation, in equal measure for natures hidden underground treasures...and for Diane's insatiable curiosity and literary diligence that created this tasty tribute to the edible underworld." --Elizabeth Andoh, author of KIBO ("Brimming with Hope"): Recipes & Stories from Japan's Tohoku"Diane Morgan has written a masterful book about root vegetables."-- Deborah Madison, author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone"Diane Morgan has done the impossible. She has transformed the subject of root vegetables into an extraordinary reference book and brought them deliciously to life with irresistible recipes. This is a must for any cook who wants to expand their culinary horizons and navigate the fascinating world of root vegetables with confidence." -- Grace Young, author of Stir-Frying to the Sky's EdgeWinner, IACP Cookbook Award 2013 - Single SubjectWinner, James Beard Foundation Cookbook Award 2013 - Vegetable Focused and Vegetarian"Roots" also comes out at a time when there is an explosion of interest in vegetable cookery, including at the high end. David Kinch at Manresa in Los Gatos, Calif., is probably the first American fine-dining chef to make his reputation based on his vegetable cookery. Morgan, like Kinch, takes a kind of nose-to-tail approach to vegetables, using not just rarer varieties but parts of the vegetable that are often discarded: the tops of the carrot, beet stems, parsnip and turnip leaves. . . . Besides using little-known roots like salsify and parsley root, which Morgan points out was a staple of 19th-century cookbooks, "Roots" also brings back some other vanished elements of pre-modern foodways, such as the root cellar. . . . it occurred to me that widespread change in food quality doesn't come from restaurants but from educated, passionate and demanding home cooks. Diane Morgan and her remarkable cookbook are vital instruments of that change." - Chef John Broening, The Denver Post"In this vividly illustrated encyclopedia of, and paean to, everything from Andean tubers to wasabi, Diane Morgan makes a strong case for the delightful possibilities of this vastly underrated class of vegetables. Her lore is fascinating and her passion for her subject is nothing less than inspiring." -- Colman Andrews, editorial diretor of The Daily Meal.com and author of The Country Cooking of Italy" . . . that is what a cookbook should be: a guidebook, a resource.. The kind of thing you can go to again and again and again. Not because you loved one recipe, but because no matter how many times you read it, you'll always learn something new. That is what I discovered in Roots: The Definitive Compendium with more than 225 Recipes . . . it hit all of my cookbook expectations. It's a resource (and a good one at that), the photos are beautiful but the recipes aren't over dominated by them, the story is personal, and in reading it, you get a lesson in food. For example, I had no idea that carrots are believed to have originated in Afghanistan." - Anna Brones, Huffington Post"Diane Morgan demonstrates that looks aren't everything, especially when it comes to root vegetables. From burdock and crosne to salsify and yuca, Morgan's recipes curry favor with taste buds that are open to culinary adventures. Her dedication frees the way for a deeper appreciation of some of the most underappreciated ingredients we know. Thankfully, many of the starring vegetables can be found at the farmers' market, local grocery store, or ethnic markets." - Epicurious, The Best Cookbooks of 2012"Any cookbook with 11 recipes for radishes, and the same number for wasabi, has got to be pretty complete. How about Roasted Turnip Ghanoush? Three-layer Parsnip Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting? Microbrew-braised rutabagas? Or dishes made with unfamiliar roots like crosne, malanga or arrowhead? It makes us happy that autumn is finally here." - Shelf Awareness

Next to no photos in this Kindle version - so disappointed, as other reviews led me to believe there was a normal amount... And of the very few there are, half of those aren't even of finished dishes - merely still life photos of the raw root. This isn't to say there are probably many good recipes here - I'm just uninspired to sift through them all. In this day and age where there are so many fine cookbooks with tons of excellent photography of finished dishes, I would have passed on this had I known. Without great photography to impress upon my mind, I doubt I'll even remember I purchased this, when the time comes that I've purchased some amazing roots and I'm looking for ideas and inspiration. I wonder if the hardback version is different...

This is the most informative book about root vegetables. If you are going to buy only one book about root vegetables, this is the best one because it covers more root vegetables and has more information about each root. Other books on this topic are not quite as thorough as this book and they contain mostly recipes.

I love root vegetables! When I first saw this title, I had visions of vegetable casseroles, roasted roots, vegetable salads, and much much more! Can you believe it--there's a recipe for Brown Sugar-Ginger Ice Cream on page 142!!!! And Horseradish Gnocchi on page 154!Turnips! Wasabi! And, something called Scorzonera Fettuccine in Mushroom Cream Sauce! I'm going to have to try that one!And there's so much more!Celery Root! one of my favorites! I think I'm going to have to go shopping soon and bring home some Celery Root!I love this book--it's given me some ideas for things to try, and wonderful meals to eat!

Fabulous cookbook! Yummy, easy-to-make, inexpensive recipes. Now I cook with roots all the time. Try the homemade Ginger Ale. You will never go back to store bought. Impress your friends and serve them something out of the beet section.

Before this book, I'd look at a root and think "What the heck am I going to do with you?!" and always end up roasting it. Diane Morgan's book is beautiful and full of useful information and recipes. I'm much more adventurous now, when faced with a weird root at the farmers' market. I take it as a challenge! I love this book and am so glad I took a leap of faith and bought it!

This is a neat cookbook that covers many well-known root vegetables and some with which you may not be familiar. We hosted a dinner party based on root vegetables, and every recipe was from this book. It was a really fun night, and the wasabi encrusted beef was out of this world!

A while ago it occurred to me that my diet seemed to limited, especially as it related to vegetables. I remember my father loved rutabagas, but Mom cooked them with oodles of bacon grease--surely there's a better way! And what does one do with turnips? Or jicama (other than slicing matchstick pieces into salads)? This book goes into way more depth than I would have imagined possible. I've not worked through the entire thing yet, and I hope that not all the recipes call for ingredients that will be difficult to get, but I love thinking through some new to me foods.

No wonder this book won all those awards, made over half of the recipes so far and they are imaginatively wonderful. Unexpected combinations! A lot a fairly easy to prepare and so far all are delicious.

All I can Say is "WOW" - Honestly - A Huge Thank you to the author Eric Mitchell! His first book walked me through the steps of getting familiar with my Kamado and this follow up is just mind blowing! It is absolutely Beautiful!! The entire book is Magical and the photography is gorgeous! All of the recipes are Over-the-top Awesome! - P82 Tandoori Chicken!!! (I Just Knew it was going to be in there!!) I'm an avid BBQ enthusiast who came across the Big Green Egg two years ago for the first time. I am in Texas and have tried just about every type of outdoor cooking. I purchased an egg and a few cookbooks and started a passionate venture that really feels more like a calling. I haven't touched my barrel smoker, my weber, or my propane Viking grill since my discovery of the Egg. When I started to use this author's first book I immediately became a student. I first took notice to the fact that each recipe includes instructions from start to finish including how to set up the egg each and every time. His techniques are easy to follow and adapt to and he consistently makes it easy to check (and recheck) the entire process without having to reference anything other than the page you are working off of. I quickly went from being "Green" (Had to say it) - to becoming widely known as the best cook in my circle of friends and family. I have recently completed each and every recipe in the first book "Smoke It like a Pro" and this new book proves to be another amazing adventure. The techniques and instructions in this edition are very straight forward and are never hard to follow - I have never failed on a single recipe I have gone after and I feel like a pro each and every time. Seriously - I'm writing this review with pure gratitude. I purchased the first book six times over to give to friends as a gift and I have already purchased this one again ;)

I use both of Eric Mitchell’s books all year long. His recipes are easy to read and I’ve found all of the to work as described.

As popular as The Big Green Egg is with grillers everywhere, it is hard to find a good recipe book for it! This book is a "real person" cookbook with wonderful tips, tricks, and recipes that can be used for any ceramic griller like the BGE. So glad I found this!

This book is perfect for the new Egger because all the guess work is taken out of cooking your dish/meat. The entire book is recipes. It includes the basic meat smoking recipes to the more exotic. He directs you how to exactly set your lower vent and daisy opening for the desired temperature necessary to achieve the perfect results. The author instructs you how long the dish will take and has an accompanying photo of the completed dish. This is the perfect book for someone who does not have the fancy temperature probe where you set the temp and the controller achieves your desire temp. That has always been a tricky part for the new Egger. The author takes a lot of the guess work out of it for you. The other step that is hard for the new cook is just how long will the roast will take to cook. He gives you the time it should take to make the dish. His first book "Smoke It Like A Pro" is another great book for beginners, Eggheads having some technique questions, etc. Both books are great "go to" books and well worth their purchase price.

Just tried

Even though I own a Char-Griller Akorn, this recipe book doesn't know it. Folks actually believe that I know how to cook.

I have both of these books by Eric Mitchell, both great books. The first one for me is a must have, some super recipes. While this book also has some great recipes I just feel the first one was better, a much better read relating to the BGE. Many of the same details from the first book are also in here.

I was given the first of the two books by Eric Mitchell as a birthday gift, the first one impressed me so much that I bought the second of the two! Lots of great recipes for grilling outside the egg. Enables you to think outside of the box when preparing and grilling!

Maps are unlabeled and gray scale requiring students to access other maps to complete assignments. Random drawn black and white pictures are inserted instead of relevant maps. Lessons are laid out so students have to flip back and forth for maps and charts for each question. Geography should be fun, pique a students interest to see and experience the world. I've found I have to pull up a lot of side information to make these lessons remotely come to life.

Only disappointing because the cover makes it look all colorful and interesting, and every page is dull black and white, just facts and figures. But my son (11) is working through it and learning some interesting stuff, so it definitely has value.Must be used along with an atlas.

Content is decent but presentation is awful. I bought this book based on the high ratings and was very disappointed. The facts in the book are fine but they are delivered in such a dry manner that my child is beginning to hate geography. When I first looked at the opening pages it seemed okay, but the first few pages are deceptive as to the overall quality of the book. We are going to stop using it and search for something better.

When purchasing an item I always search for great quality, great reviews, without putting a dent in my wallet. Item arrived promptly with Prime. I purchased this item based on the good reviews. Everyone's homeschooling style is different, and I would have to say for me, the book is way too busy. I am less concerned with my child knowing the population of each country, and more concerned with her knowing where it is located. I just cross out what I feel is just busy work, however I would not buy this book again. You also need to purchase an atlas with this book. I purchased the answer atlas, as was recommended by other reviewers, and it still does not have all the information you need to complete this book. My child finds half of it online, and half in the answer atlas.

AN ATLAS IS NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENTS!!!!!!! IT IS NOT ALL-INCLUSIVE!As an educator, I bought this book to be used in my Middle School Classrooms. It appears to have thorough content however, BEWARE...... for successful completion of the assignments an ATLAS IS NEEDED for almost every page of the book. As my students do not all have immediate access to an Atlas, this book has become useless in my everyday routine.

I bought this for my child, but I ended up using it as well. I have always loved geography myself, but the one thing that is constant is change, so it's good to keep up with new borders and nations. It was a great learning tool and refresher.

Amazing book of wonderful quality!! We youe it everyday. Would recommend.

It's good and fun for my child, but yes, you need an Atlas in addition to complete this book. The The Maps and assignments aren't up to date!

This was a gift for my son and mother. My mom loves it. She loves that the Spanish word is under a picture that then can be found in the larger picture as a search and find. She also loves the index in the back for English translation and Spanish pronunciation. Another plus is the online games and native speaker recordings! It will be so fun to use with my son when he is older. For now it helps us so we can use the words around him.Next I'm getting usborns 1000 English and German words. I'm hunting for a MS Arabic book like this but it seems that does not even exist or at least not what I'm looking for in particular.

Well, the book was smaller than expected, but that was my own fault for not paying attention. It appears to be the same as the hardbound version, just smaller. Actually, its a nice compact size.

My friend is working on Spanish with her grandson. I liked the internet support available with this book.

My children are using this book this year to learn vocabulary for their Spanish class. The illustrations are a colorful and helpful way to help with the memorization, so they enjoy using it. My only disappointment is that this particular paperback is a smaller scale version of the hardcover book, which I didn't realize when I made the purchase. But we are using it and it works. I would recommend the orange hardcover version, which is larger, and nicer for reading.

It's a fun and engaging picture book that helps you learn Spanish vocabulary (or any other language it comes in.) It's also fun to try to find the duck on every page.

Six year old and three year old are learning Spanish for their summer vacation.

Excellent for basic vocabulary & convenient using with a computer for the correct pronunciations.

I probably bought this book more for myself than my 1 year old, but it's great to see so many pictures and have all the words righf there! I'm super visual so it's an ideal way to learn. It's a large book but we love to look at the pages. He's learning many of the words in English while I also get to stimulate my mind and try to learn Spanish.

Persuasion (Penguin Clothbound Classics), by Jane Austen

Review

“Critics, especially [recently], value Persuasion highly, as the author’s ‘most deeply felt fiction,’ ‘the novel which in the end the experienced reader of Jane Austen puts at the head of the list.’ . . . Anne wins back Wentworth and wins over the reader; we may, like him, end up thinking Anne’s character ‘perfection itself.’” –from the Introduction by Judith Terry

About the Author

Jane Austen was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction set among the gentry have earned her a place as one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature. She was born in Steventon rectory on 16th December 1775. Her family later moved to Bath and then to Chawton in Hampshire. She wrote from a young age and Pride and Prejudice was begun when she was twenty-two years old. It was initially rejected by the publisher she submitted it to and eventually published in 1813 after much revision. All four of her novels - Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815) published in her lifetime were published anonymously. Jane Austen died on 18th July 1817. Northanger Abbey and Persuasion (both 1817) were published posthumously.

Just so you know, I love Jane Austen. And I so looked forward to listening to Persuasion while I headed toward sleep. It's definitely my bad because I did not listen to the sample before I purchased the Audible edition. Now, when it comes to intonation, there are two ends of the spectrum: At one end, the intonation is a flat line. In other words, there is no intonation. At the other end of the spectrum is the Audible reading of Persuasion. Never have I heard so much intonation crammed into such a small amount of text. But an excess of intonation was not sufficient to cause the listener (me) to want to stab herself with a fork. It was the combination of intonation on steroids with excessive pauses (pauses before every phrase including two-word prepositional phrases) that finally caused me to leap out of bed and terminate the narration. I've learned my lesson. From now on I will listen to the sample.

EUREKA! I have found it. I have found the key word. The key word is “ENJOY.” I ENJOY being alive. I ENJOY breathing the air. I ENJOY being able to sleep, to dream, to think, to write. I ENJOY reading books. And I especially ENJOY writing personally-revealing reviews of personally-revealing books that ignite the imagination and send the mind flying!OK. OK. Enough about me. What about you? Why might you want read Jane Austen's "Persuasion"? Why, to ENJOY the book of course! To ENJOY reading Ms. Austen's writing!! But why stop there? Why not launch ourselves beyond the ENJOYMENT of reading the book? Why not keep going until we arrive at the ECSTASY of seeing, hearing, experiencing something imaginary, something ideal, something unreal, as if it were really happening right here, right now, in real life. Sounds great! But how? By bringing the book to life in one's mind. Yes. Yes. Yes. But how? How?? By seeing/hearing the 2007 movie “Persuasion,” starring Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones, BEFORE reading the book. That's how.I did see/hear the movie BEFORE I read the book. And I'm glad I did. As I was reading the book, the movie kept coming back to life in my mind. In addition, the book supplemented and expanded the movie by revealing, in depth and in detail, all those thoughts, feelings, incidents, and other little things that did not make their way into the movie.By means of the written word, a book can open a character's heart and mind to the reader. By means of voice-over, a movie can do the same kind of thing. But not to the EXTENT that a book can do. Point granted. But still! Whatever the movie may lack in such EXTENT is made up for, many times over, by the movie's astounding EFFECT.Indeed, as far as EFFECT goes, there is something in the movie that surpasses anything and everything in the book; in any other book I have ever read; in any other movie I have ever seen; and in any experience I have ever had in my entire life. That extraordinary "something" that I am raving about is the kiss scene. Not to mention the love letter -- and the race against time -- leading up to the kiss scene. Not just the kiss, mind you. The scene! There, in the kiss scene, a moment of time becomes an eternity of bliss. The infinity of space shrinks to nothing. Nothing except! Nothing except a small warm pocket of space wherein there is room enough for only two human beings, two people, a man and a woman, this man and this woman. Each is the whole world of the other. What will become a kiss evolves and revolves between the two of them, binary stars, paired, gradually encircling one another, beyond the reach of all the universe that is not their own. It is just the two of them. Nothing more. Nothing less.Try as I may, I cannot tell you in words. The book cannot tell you in words. You have to see the movie to believe it. Seeing it, hearing it, you will believe it, even though it is nothing but make-believe."Nothing but make-believe"?? What a thing to say! As if make-believe were of little or no value. A next to nothing sort of thing. A waste of time! of money!! of life itself!!! Ah, but think. Just stop for a moment and think. What would thinking be like without the make-believe of imagination? What would life be without the make-believe of dreaming? Such questions answer themselves. We cannot think without imagining. Nor can we live without dreaming. Nor can we make the most of life without make-believe. Gotta have it. Can't do without it. So, no more down-talking make-believe.OK. Agreed. Now that's settled, I can turn my back on things that do not interest me, and return to what does -- i.e., "Persuasion" -- the book and the movie (both of which, by the way, are "nothing but make-believe").Much as I much prefer books to movies, the 2007 movie of "Persuasion" is exceptional. So exceptional that, if I had to choose one over the other, either the book or the movie, I would choose the movie. By the grace of good fortune, however, I don't have to choose between the two. For, I have both: the movie and the book. Each is excellent. Both are superb. And the two together are scintillatingly synergistic. When push comes to shove, however, my mind must admit, and my heart must confess, that, to my way of thinking and feeling, the movie is even better than the book, simply because of the kiss scene. That kiss scene is so good, so well done, so realistic, so believable, that I believe it to be real, even though it is "nothing but make-believe." Is believing in make-believe such a bad thing? I think not. Speaking of thinking, consider this:Once you have seen/heard the love letter, the race against time, the kiss scene, and the other scenes in the movie, you can replay them in your mind by conducting "search and enjoy" missions: just pick up the book; flip to the juiciest pages; and read to your heart's content. What could be easier? What could be more enjoyable?? Certainly not the realities of everyday life. Ugh! Why get into that when you can get into this: a good book.

Since the reviews here seem to be of various editions I want to be clear I am reviewing the Audible version of Austen's Persuasion. This book was read by Sinead Dixon and while her narration is lovely the production value is very low. Dixon can be heard clearing her throat swallowing, and sniffling upon occasion, which undoubtedly will disturb folks with auditory issues. Additionally, papers can be heard shuffling in the background and in one chapter a horn is honking in the background. Finally, it is hard to hear at the highest volume setting on my devices. I have come to expect excellence from Audible and have a hard time believing this book has a cost associated with it as it is.I enjoy Austen's work and it was nice having it read aloud to me, I just expected more than I got. If you can find another narrator I suggest you purchase that version.

Jane Austen finished "Persuasion" in 1816, less than a year before her death. "Persuasion" is shorter than her other novels. It is however the polished work of a mature author, and easily holds its own with her other finished novels. As the story opens, Sir Walter Elliot, a vain and foppish baronet facing bankruptcy, is persuaded to rent his home and move his family to Bath to economize on expenses. The unmarried middle daughter, Anne, is assigned responsibility for closing up the house and turning it over to the prospsective renters. Anne is shocked to learn that the renters are an Admiral Croft and his wife, whose brother is her former fiancee Frederick Wentworth, once a young naval officer, now a wealthy captain. Their first encounter will be awkward and painful for Anne, who regrets not having married Wentworth. Wentworth himself is still in search of a wife. Thus begins a delicate dance. Can Wentworth pass up younger and more attractive women to take a second look at Anne? Is Anne herself clear in what she wants? Will the two former lovers find a way to a second chance to make the right choice? In this final novel, Anne wrestles with a dilemma common to Austen heroines, whether to marry for love or money and security. There is much humor and more than a little suspense in Austen's story, and an exploration of the dilemma. "Persuasion" is a well-written and moving story, filled with the usual well-developed characters and often biting social commentary of a Jane Austen novel. It is very highly recommended to her fans and to those readers looking for an excellent period romance.

Review

“One of the finest books written about Boston. . . . Walsh weaves the stories of luminaries who had crucial experiences in Boston—Morrison, Lou Reed, Timothy Leary, James Brown—around the forgotten and often astonishing history of the city when it was old, weird, and grimy.”—Boston Magazine  “Astral Weeks unearths the time and place behind the music. . . . A book full of discoveries. . . . A fantastic chronicle.”—Rolling Stone“Many a writer has aimed to unlock the mystery of Van Morrison’s abstract, early masterpiece, Astral Weeks. But no one before Ryan Walsh thought to center the investigation in the time and place of the album’s inspiration: Boston’s teeming music scene in 1968. . . . The result must be read to be believed.”—Billboard“Ryan H. Walsh’s new book, Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968, takes up Morrison’s sui-generis masterpiece and unearths the largely forgotten context from which it emerged. . . . In documenting the milieu out of which the album came, Walsh also argues for Boston as an underappreciated hub of late-sixties radicalism, artistic invention, and social experimentation. The result is a complex, inquisitive, and satisfying book that illuminates and explicates the origins of Astral Weeks without diminishing the album’s otherworldly aura.”—Jon Michaud, NewYorker.com“Wonderfully oddball.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times Book Review “Astral Weeks is a brilliant, beautiful tribute to a long-lost era of free-form radio, communal living, underground newspapers, burgeoning musical scenes in their pristine form before being captured by the ‘star making machinery,’ and the birth of a visionary album by a 22-year-old Irish singer/songwriter that remains terrifying in its untouched beauty. . . . This book is a masterful end result of research, patience, and love for a time and sensibility sorely missing today.”—PopMatters“Walsh describes Boston as ‘the true birthplace of American hallucinogenic culture.’ By the end of his colorful, highly illuminating history of the city's late-60s freak scene, it’s hard to argue. . . . Astral Weeks is a book worthy of the name.”—Uncut“A ‘secret history’ of a proud old city caught in the throes of cultural hysteria. . . . Walsh’s book recreates a time and place that attracted an impressive array of characters.”—The San Francisco Chronicle “The secret history unspools like an endless bar yarn, an almost-impossible tale in which obscure and famous figures are tethered in conspiracy and coincidence. Walsh’s voice is casual, his prose accessible, and his humor occasionally eviscerating. . . . Astral Weeks is another right-on-time reminder of how crucial participation is in keeping art and music alive.”—Jessica Hopper, Bookforum“The book is rich with details on what was then an incredible fertile time for the arts. . . . Walsh was drawn to write this book because he was so moved, as is anyone with a soul, by what became Morrison’s masterpiece. He honors that art with his own.”—Charles P. Pierce, Esquire   “Walsh’s book recaptures much that might otherwise fade away. . . . The mini-histories embedded throughout are often entertaining.”—The New York Times Book Review “Walsh does a strong job of dramatizing the interpersonal tensions informing the album’s creation, adding grit and depth to a story often transmitted with a more facile investment in the notion of individual genius. . . . Walsh is a chatty and engaging writer, and his research is impressive. . . . The most compelling reason to read Astral Weeks is not to learn about Van Morrison or his vaunted record. This is a book about the hub of a very weird universe.”—Los Angeles Review of Books“The story Walsh has unearthed is so mind-boggling, so full of extraordinary detail and coincidence, and strange, now impossible ambitions, that one can only share in his delight at the sheer improbability of it all. . . . Possibly if you were to spend years investigating a crucial period in the life of your city, you would find stories as good and as rich as these, but even then you would have to have an eye as keen as Walsh’s, a nose as sharp, an ear as sensitive and as attuned to the frequency of the times. This is a wonderful book, I think, funny and interesting and completely absorbing, if you have any interest in just about anything this magazine holds dear—art, politics, fun, music, chaos.”—Nick Hornby, The Believer“A rich evocation of the momentous year when Van Morrison, feeling from the breakup of his R&B band Them, found himself in Boston. . . . The music book of the moment.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer"You don’t have to be a fan of Van Morrison’s staggeringly unique, near-perfect album to appreciate Walsh’s strange, engaging history of a time and place in America (Boston, 1968), and what it reveals about the forces (political, cultural) altering the fabric of the entire nation. (If you do happen to like Astral Weeks, this book is definitely for you.)"—Jonny Diamond, Lit Hub“That Walsh has taken on the milieu surrounding a beloved album is impressive—and his holistic approach, encompassing a host of countercultural figures and groups in late-1960s Boston, offers a bold blend of the familiar and the unknown.”—Vol. 1 Brooklyn  “Walsh writes with the enthusiasm of a fan and the precision and depth of an expert. A first-rate book about a piece of music and the time in which it was created.”—Booklist “An energetic history. . . . A fine-grained and wide-ranging portrait of the album’s gestation. . . and of life in the city’s counterculture in that raucous year. . . . Offers deep insight into the creative process of this mysterious work. . . . The late ‘60s counterculture in New York in San Francisco is a well-known story. What happened in Boston ‘has gone largely unremarked.’ Astral Weeks fills that void with gusto.”—Shelf Awareness"Astral Weeks is many things: a deeply-reported illumination of the Boston underground of the late '60s; an investigation of a mysterious cult leader; the skeleton key to a canonical album by Van Morrison. But at its heart is a journalist's quest to understand the very air that was breathed in a single moment in time, a personal reading of the poetry of history, and a yearning to trace the invisible byways of inspiration itself."— Joe Hagan, author of Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine“The lost story behind a timeless album—a wandering Irish songwriter named Van Morrison, stuck in a strange town called Boston in 1968. Ryan H. Walsh digs deep into all the moment’s cultural and spiritual chaos, with a bizarre cast of characters—making the music sound even weirder and more beautiful than it already did. There’s no rock and roll story quite like Astral Weeks.”—Rob Sheffield, author of Dreaming the Beatles and Love is a Mix Tape“Astral Weeks is a veritable time machine to the folly and ferment of 1968 Boston—a time when James Brown could stop a riot, a movie star could get mixed up in bank robbery, and a high school kid could find himself backing one of rock’s great bands.”—Paul Collins, author of The Murder of the Century“In this incredible new book, Ryan H. Walsh takes us through late ‘60s Boston in all its splendid morning glory. The forgotten hippie band Ultimate Spinach. The psychedelic TV show What’s Happening, Mr. Silver? The story of how Don Rickles’s mafia connections helped Van Morrison break a contract. Astral Weeks is filled with fascinating new information and page after page of mind-blowing, psychedelic revelations.”—Kliph Nesteroff, author of The Comedians“A magical mystery tour into an untold chapter of countercultural history—the ivy-walled, lace-curtained city of Boston, it turns out, concealed an underground scene as offbeat as anything found on the Haight or the Lower East Side. Ryan H. Walsh takes us down all of its rabbit holes in this lushly told historical portrait.”—Mitch Horowitz, PEN Award-winning author of Occult America

Disclaimer: Ryan Walsh is a former high school media/film studies student of mine (early 90’s). We have remained friends despite his genius. Seriously, all that culminates in Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968 (AWASH1968) are the particulars of a restless mind that divided up all the realities of his life even back then—the personal, social, creative, political, and the beatings of a wild heart. For him life is project after project. From solid, off kilter scholarship and classroom sci-fi doodles, to staging frighteningly focused stage recreations of his favorite pop records, to his efforts in film study at BU, his pursuit of an original pop music voice in his bands “The Stairs” and the still popular “Hallelujah the Hills,” his exploration of the paper collage form, and the writing he perfected with great wit regarding the stray-dog stories of his life—all these projects, each leapfrogging to arrive upon a specific insight, informs AWASH1968 with genre twisting effect. And the specific insight is that time and space and people and events and meaning and intentions and everything else is a collage. I dare say he may be at the glorious precipice of falling into his own invention: the narrative collage. After reading AWASH1968 I realized how easy it is to live on the periphery of events, even when living through them. I was 18 years old in 1968 and Walsh’s cataloguing of this amazing year in a series or interwoven ‘happenings’ and people, some tragic, some deranged, some cryptic, some menacing, many joyous, makes for a year of edited and fractured experience. I participated in, or was familiar with, a lot of what he writes about, but was hardly privy to the context of what was happening. I don’t know why, but it may be the burden of retreating to a bloodless suburb just when things got too interesting. I guess this is what happens in an asylum, another term for a big American city. AWASH1968 is, of course, his love letter to Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks—a record whose magnificence is still lost on me to this day; it’s also an attempt to understand Morrison as an artist and hothead. But both are minor features of this book, serving to stitch, or rather, cut and paste together a dozen other stories that, to me, are far more interesting: The chronicling of the Mel Lyman—Fort Hill—Avatar Magazine phenomena takes center stage, and then is quickly upstaged by PBS’s pre-Frank Zappa Uncle Meat psychedelicatessen, What’s Happening, Mr. Silver—a chapter that can stand by itself as the greatest evocation of Boston as the asylum I previously mentioned. Forays into the chilling tale of the Boston Strangler, the cathartic James Brown concert at the Boston Garden in the service of peace that eluded most of the country after the assassination of Martin Luther King; the devotion of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground to Boston as a the place to find its footing; and the investigation into Boston for its proclivity for Puritan spirituality and psychedelic mysticism conjure the notion that maybe meaning escapes us because we do not embrace life as the fractured mess it is. Nothing fits, but everything works. Not unlike a puzzle consisting of a dozen different puzzles, Walsh somehow does fit them all together, pursuing an anecdotal path to a larger meaning. And he does this through obsessive research, a personal search for an elusive spiritual connection between events and individuals, and a wild appreciation for the ebb and flow of eccentricity. His use of film theory’s cardinal belief in the suspension of disbelief serves him well, as he never shorts circuits his story through the cool skepticism of hindsight. He may actually be asking: What is a year? Is it just a period of time that has corners and can be packaged handily into something that can be understood? Of course not. Does a year—every year—begin with promise, but knowing itself as a replication of a formidable past, quickly dissolve into the chaos of an unknown future. At every turn, the characters in AWASH1968 walk time’s tightrope, challenging the norms of behavior, intent, consequence, jubilation, regret, and endurance. Just as the Fort Hill Community thrived on conflict, as Walsh states, the entire cast of characters and events mobilize conflict into some kind of larger pastiche of understanding time and space, which is where we wind up with the author’s loving tribute to an album that makes whole the fracturing of a broken heart. Ryan invokes space at the end of his impressive effort. Soon, in another year, we would be walking on the moon and we’d be forever dazzled by what the astronauts saw as a world under the sun, under the clouds, glorious dust, a shimmering blue globe surrounding by brown firmament—a reflection of the grand collisions of the universe.

This book feels like a real detective story, full of twists and turns, as the author follows all the threads that connect Van Morrison and the scene in Boston in 1968. Walsh has managed to track down almost every significant person who played a part in the making of Astral Weeks and/or the building of Van's music career. With the exception of Van the Man himself. Given that Van's past interviews are curmudgeonly and usually contradictory, I'm not sure that an interview with Van himself would have revealed much.As a musician who loves the album and knows quite a bit about Boston, I found lots of surprises and revelatory details unearthed here. A great read - enjoy!

In some ways, this book was very much like the year 1968; fascinating but disjointed. I really enjoyed the information, but it was hard to say what the book was about. It was about Van Morrison and Astral Weeks, it was about Mel Lyman and the Fort Hill Community, it was about the Boston Music scene, it was about 1968, yet it jumped back and forth through time. It read as though someone took three or four magazine articles, shuffled the pages, and called it a book. Again, it was informative and fascinating, but could have been better organized, in my opinion.

This is a hard to put down tome of information, full of dizzying stories and wild anecdotes, which never fails to intrigue. Part detective story, part celebration of all things Bostonian, part wild ride through a wild time in America's history. For those other "reviewers" who say this book is meandering, or unfocused, they're missing the point. This book is a fun, informative read, full of incredible characters and stories.

Wow....this book is amazing. It might freak you out a little. It might leave you second guessing time, space, the universe....all that good stuff. The idea that we are all connected in this world (to strangers, to our "other selves") is not new, but when we actually read a book detailing how synchronicity actually might work, it will truly blow your mind.Sure, this is not just about one of the greatest albums ever. But that is not a bad thing. I read this entire book today and it will probably be sticking in my brain for the next week or so. There is so much to digest after reading. I highly recommend this to anyone who has felt like something/someone "else" is guiding them to make art, or guiding you to make a life changing decision. The universe is a strange place. Or maybe it is us who are so caught up in the monotony of daily life, to not pay attention to the guides within us. It is a beautiful thing when we open ourselves to these guides....well maybe not if it causes us to think we are a god. Read the book to find out more on this....It is captivating, thought provoking and will leave you wanting more. The tales surrounding 1968 Boston and the overall history of spiritualism in Boston were so well researched and written. It took you to those amazingly important moments in American history, like you were witnessing it yourself....or maybe your past self did in fact witness it....yeah....I got too much Astral Travel on the brain right now....But, believe me, this is truly unique. It is full of high energy. There are no slow parts at all. If you love Astral Weeks (the album), then you must have this book, to fully realize the depth of that album and how it came to be in the mind of a genius. Or maybe geniuses?
