I try to be very fair to business books, but I didn't even finish reading this one because it was so elementary and ridiculous. I almost vomited after reading the words "execute" and "execution" a hundred times in the first chapter.This is one of many books written by formerly successful business people who feel the need (for posterity and/or outright arrogance) to take a five-page concept and spread it out over a few hundred pages.If you can master this simple principle, you don't need to read this book: Once you have a great plan or idea, you need to implement it effectively. To not effectively implement your great plan or idea, is a waste of a good plan or idea.That's it folks. The rest of this book is double-talk and business "war stories". The rest of the book is so pointless, you'd be better off spending the time with your family, or reading a different book.

This is severely dated at this point, and their knowledge of how IBM was run under Sam Palmisano is woefully incorrect. If you can ignore the first 3rd of the book, the other two thirds focusing on strategy and people processes are great. They all have to be in sync to move forward, but gone are the days of the line manager being pushed down from above to make all the decisions, instead it is up to the players to make the decisions.

For the Christmas Holidays, as we were packing the ski stuff from the basement before we left to VT, I chanced upon some books lying there, and noticed the one titled 'Execution,' by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan which I had bought almost 8 years ago but never got around to reading it. On a whim, I decided to take it with me and ended up reading it through these holidays.A quick caveat to put aside. I do wish folks would not use company names as examples in books. The original one of these, "In Search of Excellence" by Tom Peters did that. So did Jim Collins in "Good to Great". And this book does it too. What happens is that the authors use some company as an example to cite either a good or a bad practice. And a decade has passed and things have changed (perhaps 180 degrees). And that induces a chuckle in addition to both dating the book and casting doubt on the claim.However, at least for this book, 'Execution', the above is only a caveat, since I found the book quite meaningful. The reason I perhaps did not read it when I first bought it many years ago is that it felt genuinely elementary. I was at the peak of my strategy work and when you are working on projects that are either reshaping a company or positioning oneself in new markets, the discipline of execution seems not only boring, but downright waste of time (not the importance of it mind you, but rather spending time thinking or reading about it).However, now that I have moved on from the strategy function myself and am in a line management role with accountability for business results and accountability for a team and partner-relationships to deliver those results, I view this book in an entirely new light!To share a personal reaction as I read this book ( a feeling I have not had since when I sat for my twelfth grade board examination!) - when I thought about implementing the ideas that Larry and Ram were talking about in their book on Tuesday morning Jan 2nd when I return to work, my stomach tightens into a knot! The level of sustained focus, discipline, follow through, attention to detail they expect in execution is non-trivial to say the least. Again, conceptually easy to grasp; but quite daunting if one thinks about putting them into real practice on a sustained basis throughout an organization!Very briefly, they touch upon the strategic, people and operational processes as three core processes that are building blocks for execution and show how the three are related to each other. And through their experience and examples demonstrate how to implement each of these effectively. One particular insight that I liked that Larry made in particular was, 'just because an executive is good in her current job, does not mean she is ready or capable for the next'. Which is similar to what our Chairman says, "do the job you have been assigned, not your previous one."Of course with a background in engineering (and manufacturing to boot), this whole notion of execution and organizing to execute is not alien to me at all. And in reality, my immersion for a long time in strategic work was what I needed to be more lithe in my thinking. However executing by one self or with a small team in a localized way on a specific deterministic engineering problem is one challenge. But to do the same with large revenues and large teams at stake and working through your teams through other teams with high week-to-week dependence on market conditions is another challenge.This timely book was very worthwhile spending time with. Dated examples notwithstanding, one of the more immediately useful and relevant books in the business genre that I have read in a long time.

Bossidy and Charan dive into the critical gap of getting things done in this management classic. Focused on execution, the authors discuss the critical components for leadership within an execution/get stuff done environment. Pointing out the failures of hands off management, ivory tower thinking and micromanagement, the emphasis is on those critical elements that combine the what needs to be done and who needs to do it to execute on a business strategy or operational plan.The critical linking of strategy, operations and people is the role of the business leader, and in order to accomplish that critical mission, the leader must be meaningfully involved in those three elements - not micromanaging them, but leading them to efficient execution. The leader's most important job is the selection and appraising of the people in the organization, and this element should consume the bulk of their efforts and should never be delegated. The leader must embrace this role and thrive in it to ensure proper execution of the strategy and operations.The combination of people and strategy lead to an operating plan, in which the execution takes place. This plan needs to be realistic, ambitious, resourced, specific and accountable. The authors note that this piece is often the art that falls short - where the operating plan is divorced from the strategy and people - and the execution suffers.The book has critical questions and suggestions for the leader, and provides a platform for thought that is focused on getting things done rather than just the what and who theory of planning. An important read.

I loved this book so much I arranged to visit Maria's pastry shop when visiting Sicily. It was an amazing experience to be able to be in the area, the shop and also to meet Maria while I was there. I actually learned to make the Frutta Martorana while in Palermo and am now recreating these gorgeous fruits and vegetables here at home. This was as a direct result of reading this book!

I am half Siciliana so I loved reading all about the goodies in this book. I have tried a few of the recipes and they are quite good. She didn't really nail the cannoli for me, but then my memories of cannoli are the Brooklyn-bakery kind, not the authentic Sicilian kind probably.The styory of her trip through Sicily is very entertaining. The pictures make your mouth water!!

I have many Italian dessert cookbooks, but this is fast becoming a favorite. The recipes are wonderful and not typical "run of the mill" found in other dessert books. Molto gusto!

I can tell you from experience that this cookbook is much more than just a cookbook. It's a manual for creating authentic Sicilian pastries and desserts. I learned many guarded secrets working for an Italian Bakery in my youth, and can say that this book should have never been published. Now all the secrets are out.Some reviewers have complained of typos in the book. If there are any typos, I believe contacting the publisher and author could easily clear the air and correct any mistakes. The author went through a lot of trouble flattering her interviewers and humbling herself before others to obtain these recipes, I'm sure she would want purchasers of her book to be successful creating these masterpieces. She even went so far as to list suppliers for hard to find items. Personally, I've noticed NO TYPOS!Buy this book, you'll never put it down.

I borrowed this book from our local library 3x and had to pay late fees each time because I didn't want to give it up. Finally ordered it from Amazon and am very much enjoying all the recipes and am able to give it the time and attention it deserves. Love, love, love all the recipes and never knew that candied orange peel was so easy and versitile.

This reminds me of when I went to sicily in 2011 when we ate all the food there yummy... true to the island itself... want to go back but this next time NO tours... want to eat and live the sicilan way on my own time. wonderful country if you never been you gotta go

I love this book. It gives so much info about Sicily where my grandparents are from. The recipes are great and remind me of my childhood growing up and we would always have the sesame cookies and St. Josephs pastries. It really brought back good memories and happy times with my family.

Whether it be books, Cd's, DVD's, audio programs or training in any form, he is an acknowledged master who has "been there and done that." From a nobody with nothing, to a multi, multi-millionaire, he teaches you what really works, not just theory or conjecture as so many others do. He has changed more lives for the better than you can possibly imagine. I know...he changed mine!

We mankind learn from story. If you are a military story fan, this book might worth a causal read. However, I doubt the stories really add value to Tracy's long time (and repetitive) core content. For it is just another compilation.And there's argument on the word "Proven". Ch.3 talks about the principle of the mass, "proved" by the battles such as Isandhlwana, Austerlitz, .... However in Ch. 9, the battle of Chancellorsville counter-prove that principle! So just take the word as a marketing buzz.

I have heard so many say that Brian Tracy is the best. This was my first of his books, and I haven't gotten thru it yet as I am finding it pretty tedious. He takes a basic, simple technique and takes a full chapter to weave it in with military ideas. My opinion, he could have, and should have, done it in a few paragraphs. Sorry Mr Tracy.

Brian Tracy has conquered this genre with a compact book featuring twelve successful military strategies along with the application of those strategies to the business world AND your personal life.Tracy has written a bazillion books, and I found that the best of his best is crystalized in this 300 page book tied to fascinating military histories. Want to know more about strategic planning? Read this book. Productivity? Read this book. Motivating your team? Read this book. Streamline and simplify your life? Read this book. Be more financially secure? Read this book. Make better decisions? Read this book. Accelerate your success? Read this book. Provide exceptional customer service? Read this book. Okay, so if you want to be more successful, not only read this book, but APPLY the concepts and you will be successful!

In the personal improvement genre, I recently finished Victory! by Brian Tracy. Not a bad read, and it has some pretty good ideas to improve your effectiveness in life.The book consists of a number of "principles" that are pulled from military commanders and strategy. There are titles such as "The Principle of the Objective - Clarity Is Essential" and "The Principle of the Mass - Concentrate Your Power". The first part of each chapter starts with an illustration from a famous war or battle, and shows how a leader's decision based on that principle made a difference. An explanation of the principle is followed by how it relates to company effectiveness, and finally the principle is applied to your personal life. Since the book relies on military strategy, there are numerous examples and philosophies scattered throughout that tie back to generals and wars.I've always liked Brian Tracy's writings. He is able to distill down ideas and concepts into practical steps you can take to become more effective. If you've read any number of personal improvement books, you'll see many ideas here that you've seen in other places. You may not have viewed them in light of military strategy, so that could lead to some additional insights. If this is your first exposure to self-improvement literature, you'll come away with a number of ideas that, once implemented, will cause you to become more successful in your personal life. And the book isn't written such that you have to do everything here or it doesn't work. Even the successful implementation of a single idea, like simplification of your personal life, can yield tremendous benefits.If you're looking to break out of a rut or try some new ideas to become more successful, this book will definitely help you get there...

There are many business books and many self help books. Even the author had written many of the same kind himself. However, this one is truly outstanding and fascinating. The combination of war/battle histories with business/self development concepts bring life and glamour into the book. The ancedotes really help readers like me to better understand and bear in mind the twelve principles (in twelve chapters) the author elaborates. In short, a must buy for frequent business/self help book readers. I assure you that you can re-read it several times in the future with the same passionate interest.p.s. Tracy's "nuts and bolts" approach, using military (involving the ultimate "real world," life-or-death situations) metaphors, examples and case studies gives the information in the book a hands-on feel with little tolerance for Pollyanna "pie-in-the-sky" nonsense. If I had to chose just one self-help book as a reference guide, "Victory" by Brian Tracy would be my choice, hands down.

Oh my gosh!!! I criminalize with Lily and Hyde! wow it has me crying and telling at the book 😂 . I was a mess... But loved how they conquered all those lies and love was stronger than all of it t! I loved their banter and their moments of reflection. Cami always leaves me wanting more of her books!💗

It's nice to actually like both lead characters. I loved the banter between them and how Hyde took to her family. I WOULD like to see a different conflict than the automatically believing the worst about each other, though.Well written, clean, finished in a day, Cami is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers.

Getting your big chance to finally br in the right place at the right time came for these two beautiful characters who just wanted to love and be loved. Excellent story of how our everyday life entangle our everyday wants and desires. This book does that.

Lily and Hyde seem perfect for each other, but life can disagree in very painful ways. Another book to keep you awake all night. I love this series.

I was moved by the theme of forgiveness that was required by a number of characters in this book in order to overcome the obstacles that were faced. Yes, I need the large print edition. The pew copies are just too hard to read with the standing, kneeling and sitting. Most important though, is the page numbers match, so it's easy to use this book during services.

This is a large print paperback version which makes it easy to read, though not very portable. It is good for home use though not for travel. Of course the text is the traditional pre1979 version which I prefer.

I love reading the lovely words. I think I will have to buy the book also. Need it to be with n my hands.

I bought this for my mother who has MD. She reads her prayer book every night. She had been reading the same prayer book she had as a child, a palm size leather-bound book with print so small she had to read with a magnifying glass. This large print edition was perfect and, to the best of my ability to compare, exactly like the smaller 70 year old version. She no longer needs the magnifying glass.

It's all there, but hard to find. This was one of the first books I bought with my Kindle, but I found that reference books that are not meant to be read pages in sequence cover to cover, do not lend themselves to this format. I would like to have had a searchable index in order to key into specific rites and prayers. Even a page reference from the paper version would have been good.

Well, I can't rate the BCP anything but positive. My only concern was I failed to read the size of the book and it was smaller then I would have liked, the pages are thin, but at the same time feel very "strong." It has the Daily Office and the complete Psalter. If only I had read the dimensions, I am sure I would have opted for a larger addition. If you don't have problems with smaller print, then by all means purchase this copy, you can't be the price. Also the binding it very good, the book while small, lays flat, whch is a really nice in a hardcover book of this size.

I am an inquirer in the Anglican Church, and thrilled to at last own a copy of the Book of Common Prayer. I was initially attracted to this version by its vivid cover. Upon delivery, the book was in pristine condition and much bigger than I anticipated. I admittedly ordered this book on impulse, and had not looked closely enough to notice that it is the 1912 edition, and contains ceremonies and liturgy pertaining to the Church of England as well as the Scottish Episcopal Church.The language is eloquent and graceful, and I was especially moved by the Catechism. I would recommend this for anyone within or interested in the Anglican Church, or any Christian for that matter.
