Hamilton's edition is a masterpiece of scholarship and close reading. The entire work is revised, and the text of The Faerie Queene itself has been freshly edited, the first such edition since the 1930s. The text, itself a milestone in academic achievement, has been produced by Hiroshi Yamashita and Toshiyuki Suzuki and is now considered the new standard text of the poem. This edition continues the excellent scholarship of the first edition; Hamilton provides exceptionally full and careful annotation of the text, detailed guidance to critical comment, and a wealth of introductory material setting the poem in its historical and literary context. This edition also includes additional original material which includes a chronology, a letter to Raleigh, commendatory verses, and dedicatory sonnets. A list of characters and their appearances has also been compiled by Shohachi Fukuda, listing their place in the poem and commentary on the names. As a sign of its enduring appeal, this edition was, in 2005, awarded the Isobel MacAffery Award by the International Spenser Society for its outstanding contribution to Spenser studies.  A. C. Hamilton is the retired Cappon Professor Emeritus at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. He is the General Editor of Spenser Encyclopedia.

The Faerie Queene defies description and ought to be experienced by any 16th century poetry buff. Concerning the Longman paperback: it doesn't hold up so well with repeated readings and my current copy has pages pulling away from the spine. However, there are footnotes (as opposed to irritating endnotes) and the book itself will lie flat on a desk to allow for extended periods of study. Nothing like trying to write notes on FQ when you're holding your Penguin Classics edition open with one hand!If you are mainly interested in reading and enjoying the Faerie Queene without writing a paper on it, then you probably don't need the Longman. The Penguin version is fine, and there are other, older versions available as well. The only thing you might miss are the footnotes, but they also might not be worth $40 to you. For the serious student, however, this version is invaluable due to its extensive critical apparatus. If you can, try to secure a 1st edition hardback. Most of the additions to the 2nd edition were nominal at best, and you can always catch up on your bibliographic references by searching the Spenser bibliography online. Most importantly, the hardback holds up better than the paperback they are issuing now. Also, some of the notes in the 1st edition are quite funny (referring to Britomart as "bitchy," for instance); academic relics from the seventies are great. And if you're going to be studying the Faerie Queene long-term, you will need something to preserve your sense of humor.

Spenser's marvelous amalgamation of chivalric quest-romance, Ovidian mythology, phantasmagoric allegory, and classical-cum-Renaissance epic comes the closest yet to a definitive edition in this reissue of A. C. Hamilton's Second Edition of the poem. (Second Edition still, according to the splendid and majestic new cover; Revised Second Edition, according to the title page; Third Edition, according to the Acknowledgements!) When Hamilton was tapped some 35 years ago to edit the original Longman edition, I don't think I would have deemed him the best person for the job, but I must admit that by this time his combination of expertise, wisdom, balance, and lucidity would be hard to beat. His introduction and extensive footnotes make an invaluable guide for anyone embarking on a serious exploration of this vast, 400-year-old world of words and wonders. (In the Kindle edition, the notes are gathered at the end of each canto and hyperlinked to the stanzas to which they refer.) As to the text itself, prepared by Hiroshi Yamashita and Toshiyuki Suzuki, it is certainly high time for Spenser once again to have editors who understand that their readings for Books I-III should, generally, follow the 1590 first edition rather than the 1596 reprint. On the other hand, it is absolutely unfathomable to me how they can have rejected so many revisions, extending even to entire lines of verse, which can only have been made in the 1596 text by Spenser himself. Fortunately, Hamilton always give the later reading in his footnotes, so this is a RELATIVELY minor complaint. Still needed is a complete edition of the poem in modern spelling: despite what you may read elsewhere, Spenser's spelling is almost never more archaic or eccentric than that of Shakespeare or other contemporaries, provided that they, too, are read in authentic old-spelling editions--but they almost never are, making Spenser seem much more alien and difficult to read in comparison than he really is.

For those who are in search of a serious, scholarly edition of Spenser's seminal work, this text is a must. The editors have taken painstaking care and attention to running down obscure Classical (Greek, Latin and Italian) sources Spenser uses so liberally throughout his epic poem. Contemporary readers of FQ would have understood the references to Tasso and Dante; later readers need a sure guide to assist them through the thicket of references. Therefore, this volume serves a couple notable purposes for the true Spenserian (and English-language Renaissance) scholar: (1) It provides superlative context upon the historical (or historicist) period in which Spenser worked; and (2) It reinforces an appreciation of the wide learning incumbent of authors of high repute in Elizabethan England.

This is the second edition of the best version of The Faerie Queene available. It is a marked improvement over the first edition. For one thing, you can actually read the type. The first edition looked like it was mimeographed (for those of you who remember what that looked like). The layout is now much better, and the notes (on the same page and with the same size font as the text) and cross references remain indispensable for anyone not born in 1600.

A very, very hard read and pretty boring, but if you grit your teeth, the glorious narrative comes to life...again, it takes time and patience...there must be a good "translation" out there.

I had to use this book for a Medieval and Renaissance Studies class on Elizabeth I. This book contains extremely detailed footnotes to help beginning Medieval Studies majors sift their way through Spenser's rich prose. Even my professor said he had never seen a better resource for his students!

My son needed it for college.

What a guide. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's questioned/questioning/curious about their relationship with alcohol, whether it be in a sober moment realizing you can feel utterly grateful to be alive without outside influence or in the throes of a 48-72 hour hangover full of tears and existential crises (I didn't recognize I suffered that second part consciously until Ruby spelled it out). I found myself reflected throughout this book, sometimes in shocking and hilarious parallel, and it helps in recognizing just how connected and relatable we are to every other human in both triumph & joy and in our darker emotions and experiences. Ruby writes from compassionate place of common experience and comes across as a friend.Ruby thoughtfully explores and shares data woven into a nakedly honest narrative with gentle humor and lack of judgment. She carefully examines every aspect of the human existence, especially in how we socialize, and the possible differences in how we might experience each without alcohol, acknowledging the moments where we might use alcohol to assist or protect ourselves, and where we might not be realizing how it can contribute to greater harm, adverse results, and dulled clarity, both in our lives and in our collective consciousness. This book is full of guidance without being dogmatic, and while some of the subject matter can weigh heavy on the mind in prompting stark reflection, I find it balanced with plenty of opportunities for smiles and giggles.As a fellow privileged white, cis-gendered, able-bodied female, I appreciate her consistent acknowledgement of how our daily existence differs from the systemically oppressed and marginalized in our society and lacking the daily prejudices and violence BIPOC (black, indigenous, people of color) face. This is awareness I've committed to growing in myself, and she discusses how becoming sober curious can enable those interested in the same to step outside of ourselves and have more energy to act and uplift those who don't benefit from the privileges I know I possess without earning. Comfort and safety look difference from each perspective, but through incorporating insight from thought leaders and healers from all communities, she seeks to illustrate the benefits and provide guidance to free resources so that any human might benefit from this exploration, through better sleep, more balanced emotional responses/management, more energy, and beyond. I personally am experiencing an awakening to my own power and the control I do possess, however more easily I might be able to wield it than others.In previous attempts to moderate or take extended breaks from drinking, I found I was full of disbelief and an aching to return to my previous consumption patterns at the end of each stint. This time feels different, not only because I spent December examining and questioning my behaviors in the face of being laid off due to company financial troubles, returning to college, and the amount of hustle and clarity my life will require for survival, but because Sober Curious helps me take a softer approach and focus on what's being added to my life--not the deprivation mindset I used so many times before. I hope those who pick this book up find comfort and shared humor in the journey, even if that journey is just absorbing this knowledge before/without practically applying it to life. I know it's helping me in several ways, and for Ruby and her work, I'm forever grateful.

Thank you, Ruby Warrington, for writing what I was thinking in 2014/15 when I couldn't quite figure out what was "wrong" in my life - hello, it was booze. Although, I'm not curious about sobriety now at 936+ days (because for me, it's a better way to live), I am always curious about other people's paths and perspectives. Ruby's is relatable, relevant and a must read.

So much information, but not intimidating or lecturing. Choices abound here on how to handle your own alcohol profile. This seems to be a breakthrough concept. Don’t be afraid to be “curious.”

Coincidentally I purchased this book while starting "Dry January" and let's just say this book is motivating me to go way BEYOND dry January. So many outlooks and facts about alcohol I have never known. I have recommended this book to countless people and given many new outlooks to those who could use them. Oh, and I finished in three days. A must!!! What a great author - now seeing what else she might have in store.

I came to Ruby's work through Material Girl, Mystical World and the chapter in that book on being sober curious intrigued me. I was so excited to get this book in my hands and it did NOT disappoint! I finished it in 3 days-- I couldn't put it down. I especially loved the chapters on sobriety + spiritual practice, and sobriety + social justice. It was so refreshing to see some real honest discussion about privilege and to see Ruby quoting diverse folks and perspectives in the book. Would definitely recommend getting a copy!

This book was an impulse buy, and I can honestly say, it has changed my life! Ruby Warrington's writing is incredibly honest and she writes in a way that makes you feel as if you're a longtime friend. This book is not just about getting curious about living an alcohol-free life, it's about getting clarity on all the different parts of yourself that you may have ignored, backed away from, or shunned. Ruby displays incredible bravery by peeling back the layers of herself, while inviting readers to do the same.

I gravitated toward's Ruby's book in the midst of an experimental year-long break from alcohol, in an effort to better understand myself, and as a part of this journey to re-evaluate my relationship with alcohol for the betterment of my life. I was honestly surprised by the large amount of profound statements and aha's I took away from this book, as evidenced by the copious highlighted passages in my kindle version. It was challenging and encouraging in all the best ways, and I've been recommending it left and right to friends who are either on a similar journey or not, because I think it asks questions that many of us won't dare to ask ourselves, but that are so incredibly necessary and potentially life-saving. I couldn't recommend this book more if alcohol has impacted your life in any way. This book isn't about stripping away a delightful pleasure or ritual, it's about helping you question anything that is holding you back from living your most full, healthy, and present life possible. As a professional soccer coach, I am always looking for reliable and trusted sources that can help me to continue to develop and evolve my coaching abilities. As I have transitioned into the girl’s side of football (soccer) it was refreshing to find The Modern Soccer Coach 2014, the Author Gary Curneen does a fantastic job of providing a new approach and outlook to training and understanding the modern game. Since the author coaches a female college team, I knew that I could transition what he put in the book onto the pitch (field). The book is well written in a format that is very easy to follow and understand no matter what level of coaching you are at.The author sheds light on key elements such as the psychology aspect of football (soccer), the importance of health and provides alternative solutions for incorporating speed and agility with touch on the ball. He also provides useful and meaningful tactical drills, making them more interactive, moving away from the old school methodology many of us grew up on. His drills and diagrams are easy to follow, set up, and incorporate into your weekly practice routine. His focus on the non-negotiables is refreshing as it’s a great reminder as coaches, what we need to adhere to and look for in our training sessions.I have taken what I have learned from this book and incorporated them into my training sessions and I’ve seen an immediate improvement from my team. They are working together and enjoying training more and moving the ball as a unit. I look forward to reading his other books and seeing what else I am able to incorporate into my training regimen and continue to development my team.Any open minded coach, no matter what age level you train, can learn and incorporate lessons from this book.

After reading Chapter 1, I thought I'd wasted my money because there's a lot of obvious information and fluff about the evolution of soccer. While I understand the use of questioning as a coaching technique to encourage problem-solving, a coaching manual should provide a substantial answer one what I'm looking for as coach.As a previous reviewer mentioned, the most productive chapter is "The Non-Negotiables" that outline the environment you should provide for your players in training. Curneen provides very concrete, practical suggestions here.Finally, I should mention there a few typos that I found frustrating and distraction, but they don't detract from the author's message.

I am fully in agreement that we have to move away from the traditional style to training that is simply poor, boring and predictable and adapt a much more dynamic, high intensity, and ball focused approach. In order to ensure that we provide our players with the best environment to succeed we have to focus on maximizing what we do with the players when we are around them, both on and off the field, something this book does an excellent job to describe and explain.Gary Curneen shows us, with specific examples and proven methods, that we have to move away from the typical “we have always done it this way” approach, as the game will pass you by if you do not keep up with what is going on at the highest level. Regardless of the level you are working at, it is of utmost importance we continue to educate ourselves and understand the need to constantly modernize our working methods. The Modern Soccer Coach is an excellent book that, until now, has been missing from available soccer literature and I highly recommended it to any coach.

Miodownik after his successful book on solids (Stuff) wrote this on liquids. But it's not very deep (I would have liked more on non Newtonian liquids for example) and he goes off on tangents, notably on global warming and plate tectonics. Maybe there's not that much to say about liquids ? His gambit of using a London to San Francisco flight for his agenda is way overdone.He closes with a final irony (not noticed); he and his neighbor on the plane were both going to the same sustainable development conference in San Francisco. For two people (among many others) to fly 12 hours each way on an airplane for a one or two day conference doesn't seem very sustainable to me.

This is a delightfully quirky science book. No matter what your background you will learn something new, and the way he transitions is marvellous! He starts at A tranzits thorugh Q and ends up at B, C and D, in easy to read three page segments. The whole oddessy set up as ruminations during a single long flight, and with funny intereactions with his seat mate. It was my favorite Chistmas present for others. READ IT!

The author is very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. However, the conceit of a plane journey to tie chapters together felt trite and forced. It's possible that some of the science was distorted and/or some facts of interest left out in order to fit the science into the journey.

Simplistic and sweet holiday pictures that are perfect for children of all ages. I like the fact that you can print these out yourself and choose to use cardstock or regular paper. They come with lots of different pictures, and all are appropriate. Regarding one reviewers mention "Half naked" people, there is one photo where a Native American dies not have a top on. Which would make a great conversation to have about what everyone wore during the very first Thanksgiving ( it's not like they drew nipples on them or anything like that!). Love that despite the fact that this is a preview, there are plenty of different pictures to keep kids busy. I'm thinking of laminating and using as placemats at the children's table with dry erase markers to keep little hands busy before the big meal! And you can't do better than FREE!

a lot to learn about thanksgiving

The cover was more useful for me then whole book

Very stereotypical happy Pilgrims and half-naked Native Americans. I can't give this to kids. No bueno.
