About the Author
Dr. Siddhartha Ghosh Dastidar (columbia.edu/~sgd2002) is an Associate Professor (adjunct) at Columbia University, and has taught at the Graduate School of Business and the Department of Industrial Engineering & Operations Research. He teaches courses on capital markets and investments to full-time graduate and undergraduate students, and also in the executive education program. Sid has nearly two decades of experience in the financial services industry, both buy-side and sell-side, across asset classes and regions. As part of the Quantitative Portfolio Strategy team at Lehman Brothers and Barclays Capital in New York, he has advised large institutional clients on portfolio construction, management and risk budgeting issues. He was also the chief US equity derivatives strategist at Newedge, part of Societe Generale. He is currently a risk manager in Brigade Capital, a USD17 billion credit alternatives asset manager, where he has been responsible for coming up with portfolio construction, risk and quantitative frameworks. He has also worked in emerging market private equity for three years. Sid received a Ph.D. in Finance & Economics from Columbia Business School in New York, a MBA from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and an undergraduate degree in economics from Presidency College Kolkata (both in India). He holds the CFA charter and has published in top journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Portfolio Management. Great combination of theory and application. Perfect for students and people who have no experience in finance. Go deep on how financial institutions operate and the market mechanism. Read it and you will find staff you think you master but you haven't.
Liked the simple language, don’t like that there are no problems.
Many pictures are blurred and impossible to read. After I requested the replacement, the new book still has the same problem. I want the refund now.
I wish I had this book when I was starting off in finance! My 2 cents on what to expect and what not to expect from this book: This book covers fundamentals of capital markets, investments, and typical traded products (equities, bonds, options, etc), and gives a good and thoughtful overview of these concepts. I remember when I first started off in finance (and coming from a non-finance educational background), I was searching for an all-in book that could provide the lay of the land, a good explanation of financial concepts and also practical information on how products are traded. I didn't find any at that time - either the books tended to be too much of a fluff piece, or too much of an in-depth and quantitative treatise on one particular topic. Having read this book, I think this book finally hits that sweet spot and will be of great use to future finance interns, capital market analysts/ associates and MBA students (who want to come into finance after having worked in other industries). To summarize: If you had to read one book to get acquainted with the financial industry, this is it!Full disclosure: I knew the author when he was working in the Fixed Income division at a large Wall Street firm.
This is a must read for any one in the financial services industry, new or experienced. Fantastic literature giving a very broad view on the capital markets from many perspectives. I especially enjoyed the insights on the sell side. Also gives a very good over view on different instruments, including derivatives, and how to evaluate them. Basic statistics are also covered. This book is essentially great for anyone that wants to have a running start when starting in financial services, especially in the hedge fund space. Also a great guide if you are taking the CFA or FRM.
This book is a must read for anyone starting a career in finance or is pivoting to a different sector. The author does a remarkable job explaining succinctly - but with sufficient detail - the core concepts needed to form a foundational knowledge of the financial industry. He does not waste time with superfluous alternative explanations and undesired tangents - an unpleasant characteristic of most modern textbooks. If you are a total beginning, you will not need any additional help material. If you are an intermediate or novice who feels their stomach churn as you begin reading yet another explanation of central bank monetary policy, fear not because this book moves on to the next topic momentarily and still manages to leave you with an enhanced understanding.
This book provides a full coverage of financial markets and how different participants fit into the business. It is particularly helpful for students/junior professionals to overview and understand the financial industry, and should tremendously help their careers. With the industry being so much specialized in numerous areas, it is also very helpful for experienced professionals to get to know other business lines and financial products. As an experienced research analyst in this industry, this is the handbook on my bookshelf.
A very well written book that covers a variety of topics that people in the industry expect young joiners interviewing in the industry to have familiarity with but which are generally not found in college textbooks. Reading the book is comparable to sitting in an introductory level weekly practitioner seminar where industry people come to provide an introduction to their specific market area. The book provides an excellent broad overview of the landscape of Wall Street before delving down into specific introductory to intermediate level topics that a young applicant to the industry might be expected to have familiarity with. I also appreciate that the author has made the book available for a very reasonable price so it might have be accessible to a lot of students as opposed to trying to price it at $100+. Well done.
