This book has a lot of good information in it, I have learned about the different ways cultures prepare foods and what influenced the way they eat.I wish there were more pictures and recipes in the book, but there is a lot of good reading.I would recommend this to any culinary or nutrition student and those interested in learning about different cultures.

My daughter needed this book for her college course. I was surprised that this book costs upwards of $90.00. There was no way I going to pay that. I was happy to find this book on the cheap. For a used book, it was in good condition when we received it.

While comprehensive, this is too broad, too general and very stereotypical. Each 'cultural' group represented in the United States has the same diet as their fellows, it seems. It can also be very bland: since coming to the U.S., X group's consumption of 'junk' food, milk, and such, has increased.There are also some serious mistakes. Scotch is the alcoholic drink while Scottish refers to the people. Yet, the authors insist on calling a particular people the "Scotch Irish" (a group not recognized in Europe).Should you want very general information, without consulting specialist sources, this might be adequate for your purposes, but if it is to be used in, say, a course introducing topics of food and culture, this is not the book to use.

I bought this book as I am studying to become a Nutrition Assistant, one of the possible job requirements is to educate people of various ethnicities re: their food and possible changes. Some of the sections on the history of the country and people were fairly dense to read. Some of the focus on food was somewhat repetitive, although I did find a few surprises. This book will probably be more useful for me if I do start counseling people.

The theoretical aspects are well accessible and the Python code is sufficiently clear. This is not an introduction to Python and readers should be relatively familiar with Python or other high level languages to make the most out of this book.The PDF for the book is freely available from Green Tea Press. If you are concerned about the lack of a table of contents in the mobi version, get the paper copy until this is resolved... I would highly recommend it.

All of them are excellent.In this book, he gives a clear introduction to Bayesian analysis using well through out examples and Python code. There is a small amount of math. He makes very effective use of probability density functions, cumulative distribution functions, and simulations.He provides multiple examples of model development, including design, testing, and analysis.The book is appropriate and effective for self study. Highly recommended.

What I did not like about the book is that the code is outdated so be prepared to be looking for fixes to the code

The author totally, in my view, gets lost in words like: Requirements, Services and Controls. He uses these words sometimes at random. Since these definitions are crucial to a good and understandable built-up of any ICT architecture, the reader might get lost.Under design guidelines he talks about the services offered by the a team: Authentication, Authorizaton...etc. etc. Part of those services are Logical Access Controls which he calls "these controls". Under Technical Security Requirements we focus on controls that....The main focus of technical security controls is to protect C.A.I, which are at the same time technical security requirements. At the same time: Controls are designed to gover the following actions: again we find confidentiality, integrity..etc.All are requirements, actions, controls and services. Not clear enough in my opinion.The technical part is good.

While this book didn't light a raging intellectual fire within my gray matter it certainly was a well-crafted and thorough explanation of various security techniques. And although I found some of the chapters a bit bloated and at times confusing the price of the volume was completely justified on the basis of Chapter 12 alone. "PKI: Components and Applications" was by far the most clear and concise treatise I have ever encountered during my months of research covering PKI -- a challenging and almost arcane security method. With envious ease the author managed to delineate complicated and intricate methodolgies using a common-sense approach that's a pleasurable derivation from standard computer book narrative.If you are interested in learning about PKI I suggest no better a place to start or end than "Security Architecture: Design, Deployment and Operations".

I have gotten sucked into reading more than one book that was supposedly comparable to the incomparable Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. I have decided, however, that a wacky heroine with crazy situations doesn't always make her an equal to Stephanie, who is one of my very favorite book characters. When I saw, though, that Queen Janet had written an endorsement of Gretchen Archer's Davis Way books, I decided that it was worthy of a read, and I'm so glad I did. Davis Way is a Southern girl and former cop who gets a job working security at the Belissimo casino in Biloxi. An offshoot of this job is being a body double for the casino owner's spoiled brat of a wife. Davis is surrounded with a great cast of supporting characters, who have made me laugh out loud. A lot. Which is my acid test for a comparison to Stephanie. I have read all the books in this series, and they get better & better. And you learn something as well about the gaming industry and cop stuff. Archer obviously has done her research. Looking forward to the next Davis book, and I think you will enjoy this series!

Gretchen Archer has become my favorite "cozy mystery" author, and I read a LOT. I've read her Davis Way Crime Caper series up through her 5th book Double Knot, and I'm anxiously awaiting Double Up, due out in March 2017. if you are looking for a series that will knock your socks off you are in the right place! Seriously, her books are like crack to me. Davis Way is a hilarious laugh-out-loud heroine who kicks ass and takes names. The witty dialogue is in a class by itself, the characters such unique individuals, and the mystery is not one that you will figure out during the first half of the book -- I promise! My sister and I were on vacation together and I loaned her my Kindle as I was going to bed early one night -- I heard her laughing well into the night and I knew another fan had been born... Long live Davis Way!

First it was Janet Evanovich, then Laura Levine. More recently Barbara Allan. And now Gretchen Archer has joined my very special list of authors to whom I owe an unpayable, incalculable debt of gratitude for being 100% GUARANTEED to make me laugh, whether times are dreadful, fabulous, or anywhere in between. Double Whammy is not only funny, but over-the-top clever, and a terrific plot. Charmed one minute, howling with laughter the next, and deeply touched the minute after that. Repeat!It's that good. Give it a try. Have some laughs and enjoy the cleverness. Fall in love with Davis Way.It's a fun ride.And hey, are those pineapple recipes?

I'm having a hard time rating this one, somewhere between a 3 1/2 and 4 star. What bothered me was the flashbacks and too many extra stories, it got a little overwhelming at times. Also when Davis was in the Pokey, I had a hard time with a few things there, I don't want to say what to avoid spoilers, but I found it a bit too much. Now what I did like was Davis is a jump in there kind of woman. She gets a job in security to figure out slot machines jackpotting too often. She is also sent to other areas to figure out problems (the extra stories that I mentioned). They were interesting and entertaining but a bit much with the main story going on. I will say that this book is non stop, and keeps you guessing to what is going to happen next, because a few things I just didn't see coming. I had quite a few laughs while reading, her father seems to be the most stable character, and I loved George the cab driver. I will continue on with this series and hope that it tones down just a little, to concentrate on the main story, this was a fun read and different from the usual cozies I read.

Davis Way has the most unbelieveable life. That being said, most of it was very believeable. This is a story that needs to be read by anyone who likes action and great characters. There are so many disguises and changes for Davis I had a hard time keeping up and loved trying to guess which character she would be next. Bradley was a surprise. I had a harder time with the reality of his reaction to everything from Davis, her predicament and her use of the apartment she leased from him. By the time he came in though, I was ready to see someone wearing a white hat.Great book. I'm on to getting the next book in the series!

I loved this book! Gretchen Archer has created a character I want to hang out with often. Davis Way is witty and smart, and while she's gotten herself into trouble rather spectacularly, Archer does an excellent job of showing us the layers of the character and what makes her tick.The casino setting is well drawn and interesting, and Archer weaves it into the story well so that the plot moves along at a fast clip.I'm eagerly awaiting the next Davis Way mystery

It was a disjointed story line in the beginning. And is often the case with mystery writers, the gun references and characteristics were off the mark. I just wish authors would consult gun people before eluding to a Glock safety not being on, when in fact they have no safeties as such. And no prison guard would be carrying a puny Sig P238 in .380 caliber. Just saying......

Excellent! Fast paced, a nicely twisting plot-line, and LOL fun! I promised myself I wasn't buying any more books until I get through some of my backlog, but by the time I'd reached the midway point of the third chapter from the sample, I'd bought not only this book but the entire series. (Sigh.) I just hope Gretchen doesn't come out with a new series for a while. (Kidding. If she does, I suspect I'll be buying them as fast as she can write them, too.)

My wife and I used the book to go on three hikes during our recent stay in Santa Fe. The book was informative and helped us make selection of the hikes we took.

We have already done almost half of the hikes in this book and they are all really nice and well described.

This is an extremely small book - about 4x7 inches, 97 pages To be honest, if I had seen it in a store (rather than on-line) I would have rejected it as overpriced. It describes 24 hikes. Since I am not native to the area, I don't know if they are the "best" in the area, but I'm sure many others were omitted in the interest of brevity.We purchased the book from Amazon in preparation for a week-long trip to the area in July. The contents are useful, but limited. Directions to trail heads, maps and text for finding your way along the trail vary in quality and are quite brief. The maps are small and do not have topo lines. One useful aspect of the book is seasonal and terrain advice, which seemed to be quite accurate. The geographical range of the book extends in a radius about 50 miles from Santa Fe, but does not cover Taos or ABQ.

Well-chosen hikes, great descriptions, and good maps!

Tje idea that evil is caused by a failure of self control is nuanced, actionable, and supported widely in studies on the subject (eg, such as the Stanford Prison study).I have had contact with evil in my life, and there is a scale as discussed in the book. The book is an effective look into the causes of evil actors in our world. If we betternunderstood these ideas, perhaps we could do a better job at identifying them to stop some of their harm. Instead of making metaphysical claims as to the causes of evil, Dr. Baumeister instead suggests that we know evil by the validity of the claims of victims, which he isn't shy of saying are designed to distort reality, for a variety of reasons, but still have merit as such. He highlights four Root Causes of evil, which any reader would recognize from a cursory glance of history or contemporary politics and the motivations of leaders and politicians who we imagine have wronged us in some way, or those idealistic ideologues who would if only their bad ideas were enacted as policy.

This book has helped me expand my understanding of how people commit and rationalize violent / harmful acts. The darker part is turning it in on my own misdeeds in life and figuring what my thought processes were at the time.

I liked the book so much I bought it again when someone borrowed it and didn't return. I first read the book several years ago, but is timely reading now.

I picked up this book thinking it would be a study of serial killers or something. I was happily surprised to find a well written book about the myth of evil. Baumiester does a good job of introducing difficult concepts that challenge our belief systems. One particularly interesting facet of his theory is the "perception gap" between the victims of evil and the perpetrators of evil. Baumiester uses both scientific research and real-life examples (O.J., Sadaam Hussien, Bosnia) to illustrate his points, making the information very accessible. As a writer, I found the information on what causes people to commit evil actions fascinating and helpful in creating fictional characters with dimension. As a someone who works in the prevention field, I applied his theory about egotism and violence to school bullies. This book is a must read for writers, teachers, law enforcement, prevention specialist, counselors and so forth. This book will definately make you think.

This remarkable book begins to give us a firm basis for hope, because it provides a deep and accurate understanding of evil. This well researched and well written book examines and discredits the "myth of pure evil", and instead rigorously examines the point of view of real perpetrators to understand the true causes of evil.After adopting the simple definition of "intentional harm to other people", the author identifies the four roots of evil as greed, egotism, idealism, and sadism, and explores each of these in depth. He dispels the popular misunderstanding that low self-esteem is a major contributor to violent behavior. Instead his careful analysis establishes that people who have high self-esteem, but lack a firm basis for that belief, are especially prone to be violent. He describes how an ordinary person crosses the line into evil, how evil spreads, and how perpetrators deal with guilt. After examining the provocative question of "why is there not more evil" he describes the central role of self-control in preventing evil. interesting material, I would recommend this book to everyone. however It is a little violent and I would keep it out of the hands of sensitive audiences.
