This has been a good book to teach me what NOT to do to my children that may harm them in the future. Their father is in a smear campaign and trying his best to say every horrible thing about me possible, whether it is true or not. This book gives helpful information to try to take the power out of the parent who is alienating the children with positive responses and not jumping in the melee and slamming the offending party back, which, as humans, we tend to want to fight back. I am hoping to make better choices and while they won't all be perfect, I am trying! :-)

This is a great book to read, especially for those involved in a high conflict separation or divorce, and in the post-divorce conflicts.It's written for parents, mental health experts, attorneys and judges, and focuses on the best-interests of the child(ren).

It has very helpful, very insightful advice. This book clearly pinpoints the problems and then gives you examples of how to work around the problems. It isn't a fix all or miracle cure but it does have some really good advice for any parent who is at odds with their child(ren)'s other parent.

Eddy is excellent in discussing and helping determine the whole issue of high conflict personalities and how that affects family life. This kindle book had a few problems, though. From reading the Look INside section, I knew how the Intro was set up, yet when I got the book and started reading, there was a mysterious missing section on one of the personality types (narcissistic) that I knew had been addressed in Look Inside. If i toggled back and forth several times, it would appear, but then would go away again. If you didn't know it was there, you would not have been able to find it and it was important. Made me wonder about kindle books and how often this occurs. To my knowledge, have not run into it, but then again, I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen it elsewhere...

I absolutely loved the first book by Shevlin: “The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax.” I’ve actually read it several times and thoroughly enjoyed it each time, thus I thought I’d try the next book, “Jonathon Fairfax Must Be Destroyed.” Unfortunately, this one was a big disappointment. *Warning: Some spoilers ahead*The first major problem for me was: No Rachel! In Book 1, Rachel was the perfect girlfriend for Jonathon, but in this one she is shipped off to France and never heard from again. I suppose the author thought it’d be funny to free up Jonathon so he could bumble around falling for a new love of his life, but for me it simply didn’t work. It reminds me of the old soap opera trick where the couple has a child but later it gets inconvenient to the story so they have the child go upstairs in one episode and he never comes back down, gradually fading completely away from the story. Jonathon is not a James Bond, where he has to have a new love in every story.The first book was perfect, and in truth, my wife actually got so tired of me bursting out laughing as I read it that she stopped taking me out in public till I finished the book again. I’m sorry to say, that didn’t happen with book two. It was cute in places and I’ll admit there were several parts that I found amusing, but not once did I laugh out loud, let alone burst out in gales of laughter like I did in the first one.The bad guys in the first book were odd and vile, yet I could accept their characters as real. But the bad guys in this book were just too unbelievable. In the first book Shevlin has a true winner; unfortunately the formula just didn’t work in book two. Read it if you wish, as some really seem to like it, but I don’t really recommend it and don’t plan to ever read it again.

Hilarity ensued! I don't know how to begin describing how much I enjoyed reading this book. I was in tears and gasping( yes, gasping is real!) for breath because it was the only way I could keep from rolling on the floor! You can read the publisher's blurb to understand the premise and plot. But only by reading the book will will you get to roar with laughter as Jonathon winds his way through the labyrinth of working at a company which is not a company, producing a product that only exists as an illusion, loving a woman he only bumped into on a train, while living with a woman he only accidentally rescued. The funniest moments for me were the attempts at murder, and actual murders made by his power hungry boss. They left me in tears again and again. This is a great read. Extremely well written and plotted. There are even semi-spying, dare-devil escapes, and sawing off an ear attempts ... using a ruler! READ THIS!

First, the bad. Two plus years between novels is too long, period. Second, the wait is worthwhile. In Jonathon, Shevlin has created the perfect anti- hero. He is a nerd, a klutz, a social nobody and a lost person, who has trouble finding himself, let alone a significant other. Yet, Shevlin guides this nitwit through a hilarious adventure that will leave you laughing and happy. What else could an author do than that? It is too bad that a third book seems out of the question based on this one's ending.

I love this guy’s work. He creates an absurdist’s reality that is laugh out loud funny and thought provoking at the same time. His Jonathon Fairfax is an everyman locked inside his own insecurities where even the most innocuous social interaction becomes a traumatic event. How he deals with rapacious corporate monsters in his struggle to survive in a heartless, cruel work environment is a lesson in passive resistance. Looking forward to more from this author.

fun and funny - found myself laughing/chuckling quite a bit -- and I'm an old cynic so that says a lot for the humor and wit of this writer. Story is well done, characters well drawn and not entirely predictable -- I'll definitely read the other book about Jonathon Fairfax (the continual astonishment) -- look forward to more from Christopher Shevlin!

This book is an entertaining, satirical comedy filled with amusingly quirky characters. It may be a bit preachy concerning corporate greed, but that can be easily forgiven considering it humorous underpinnings. So in short, if you’re looking for a quirky, fun read, then this book is for you (unless you happen to be a Fortune 500 CEO).

I bought this book because a year ago ago I had read The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax, by the same author , which I foundhumorous and witty.Unfortunately, this one shows little umour and wit . It is needlessly outstretched , without any justification. It is a frankly boring book

Christopher Shevlin creates a character in Jonathon Fairfax that you just like. He is bumbling and awkward but also so genuine that you want good things to happen for him and yet he alway seems to end up in situations of pain and eminent death. I am dissappointed that his story is over as I really enjoy reading about his adventures; however, his story ended just as it should.Give Jonathon's story a try if you like that very English kind of story (if you like these kinds of stories, you'll know what I mean), but read the first book first titled The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax. Then buckle up for a bumbling kind of wild ride!

My 9 yr old daughter wants to raise goats.She has read this book cover to cover in a few days and absorbed it all.She continually reports to me how much protein goat meat hascompared to beef, how much more nitrogen we'll get on our garden withgoat manure vs steers. She is especially interested in the chapter aboutdiseases and cures so that she will have a good reference guide if the timecomes where she would have a sick goat. The book is thorough and informative.

See also review by H.E. King. As a newbie to the dairy goat world, I rely heavily on my books. This one is pretty helpful, til you try to make your first batch of soft cheese. Look elsewhere for your cheese making info, or you'll be heartbroke when you wonder if you just wasted your precious fresh milk.

Not a book I'd want to rely on alone. Opinions and wives tails need to be sorted through. Incomplete, lacking depth. It's hard to pull off writing a book for all types of goats and this one doesn't quite make the stretch. This book might be a good starting point, but is no goat Bible. Try Storey's guides for that. This one for light reading.

It's not the greatest book I have read, but doable. I wanted something that had a little more detail.

I read six books on software security recently, namely "Writing Secure Code, 2nd Ed" by Michael Howard and David LeBlanc; "19 Deadly Sins of Software Security" by Michael Howard, David LeBlanc, and John Viega; "Software Security" by Gary McGraw; "The Security Development Lifecycle" by Michael Howard and Steve Lipner; "High-Assurance Design" by Cliff Berg; and "Security Patterns" by Markus Schumacher, et al. Each book takes a different approach to the software security problem, although the first two focus on coding bugs and flaws; the second two examine development processes; and the last two discuss practices or patterns for improved design and implementation. My favorite of the six is Gary McGraw's, thanks to his clear thinking and logical analysis. The other five are still noteworthy books. All six will contribute to the production of more security software.It's important to recognize that "Security Patterns" (SP) is not as narrowly focused as a similar book, Cliff Berg's "High-Assurance Design." SP applies to code, but also to enterprise architecture, and even non-IT scenarios. A case study involving protecting a museum runs throughout much of the text, for example. SP introduces several helpful concepts as well, such as security "properties" (CIA), "services" (authentication, authorization, accounting, auditing, non-repudiation), "approaches" (planning, prevention, detection, response), and "mechanisms" (access control, etc.).The first part of SP explains the important of patterns, which I found useful as a non-professional programmer. I realized that patterns are significant not just because they help define a solution, but also because they can assist in properly scoping the problem (p 35). However, these patterns do not provide code samples. It's more conceptual than actionable.Similar to Microsoft's books on secure software development, I thought SP suffered from confusing terminology. For example, SP decides to include "accountability" as a security "property". I am not sure this qualifies as a property, since it's really only needed to know who violated one of the CIA properties. CIA violations should be labeled disclosure, corruption, and denial of service.SP stumbles when it discusses "threat assessment," defining terms like "threat source" (which should be just "threat"), "threat action" (i.e., "attack"), and "threat consequence" (really an "incident" or "violation"). In several places (pp 116. 118) SP ignores the fact that threats and vulnerabilities are independent aspects of security; they are not synonyms.Although SP's pattern approach is interesting, sometimes the execution is weak or incorrect. I found the hand-drawn stick figures in ch 9 to be laughable. I cringed when I read about "today's more popular remote shell, /usr/bin/rsh". The authors didn't know what they were talking about when discussing firewalls, either. Packet-filtering firewalls don't just work by inspecting "addresses," and the BSD Packet Filter is a stateful packet filter, not an address-inspecting packet filter. I thought the architecture diagrams were far too simplistic and in some cases poor, such as showing a mainframe and a public Web server in the same network segment.Overall, I think the idea of using security patterns to provide tools for developers and architects is powerful. Perhaps a second edition or later books will better execute on this idea. I still think SP deserves four stars for breaking fairly new ground with this approach, and using non-digital examples to emphasize concepts applicable to information security problems.

The format includes the Name (name of the pattern), Also Known As (alternative names in common use), Example (a real world example of the pattern's use), Context (when it may apply), Problem (what problem the pattern addresses), Solution (the solution principle), Structure (a detailed examination of the pattern), Dynamics (typical run-time behavior), Implementation (how the pattern is commonly implemented), Example Resolved (aspects not touched in prior sections), Variants (any customizations of the pattern), Known Uses (examples from real implementations), Consequences (benefits and liabilities), and See Also (references to other patterns that may apply). This consistent structure of each pattern makes it very easy to find the information you need in order to determine whether you should be considering the pattern for your own use. They also do a good job in laying the groundwork for why security is important, as well as what various factors come into play when building systems in today's internet-based environment.While this isn't a book you'd sit down and read from cover to cover, it is one that should stay close at hand. After reading the first five chapters, you'll have the foundation you need in order to start focusing on specific chapters that address your particular needs. But even an occasional browse through less-visited chapters could spur ideas that may address new problems that weren't present when you first read the material. Definitely a solid book with ample opportunities for benefits on the job...

I'm now just more than half way through with this book. So far I find the book with good concepts and patterns that addresses a list of issues for security development. I find the patterns described lack implementation advice and how to verify them in real-world deployment. The authors might know when it comes to security development the devil is in the details and this book lacks those details - just how to implement them. From my experience so far I liked the following books - Gary McGraw's "Software Security: Building Security In", for Microsoft security - Mike Howard's "Writing Secure code" and for Java/J2EE Security - "Core Security Patterns".Overall this book aims at people of academic interests than software projects.

The book is bundle of good theoretical material discusses in a very high level but not much help for use in real-world application development. Although the book claims to have 46 patterns for a variety of security problems, the authors completely forget to illustrate the pattern with appropriate architecture model or solution strategy. Unfortunately, every chapter forces me to question "how to make it work" or "show me the code" ! If you are a developer, you would not find any guidance for identifying a development strategy or an example driven solution using .NET or Java or even opensource. The IP Telephony case study is more of a high-level representation of patterns than a real-world implementation model. The book is also too expensive ! The book may help someone who wants high-level overview of security issues and solutions but I am not convinced how these patterns help a developer.

Patterns well documented and references are very rich. I suggest in a next book edition the inclusion of some diagrams to depict relationships among patterns.

We had been using another excellent math curriculum but found that this one is a bit better as you get into high school. For this reason, I am going to cut over to Saxon at the 7th grade with this book going forward. Results with Saxon for my older children are excellent. The curriculum is rigorous and prepares the student for SATs and university. We use the Art Reed AND the Saxon Dive CDs to help illuminate and give further examples. With Saxon, your student will be well taught. Having said that, if no one in your home is comfortable with math, it would be helpful if you had just one person that you could run a problem or two by if the solutions key doesn't suffice. Otherwise, there is also the Saxon Teacher CDs which are lengthier and may give further instruction. The Art Reed and Dive are usually 8-12 minutes a piece and are sufficient for most student. I love this curriculum and have total confidence that it will prepare my students for any major requiring math, or give them a high school exposure that has the depth and breadth to be the last math that they will have if they pursue something in the Humanities.

My daughter struggles with math. We bought the Dive Into Math instructional cd that correlates with this text/edition. Using the two combined, my daughter is understanding and retaining the material! I love how this curriculum reinforces learning by giving review questions from previous chapters in each lesson. The book gives little numbers beside each problem referencing from what chapter each question comes so that if the student can't remember, they know where to look for the answers.

We just started home schooling our 11 y/o and having seen what she's been doing in public school, we use the textbook for a guide line, the worksheets for practice occasionally and I am filling in the gaps left by public school. If you and your child are math-minded you could probably ger away with just getting the text book for a guide line but if math is not your thing then you can literally just follow the book. A little dry thay way but that's what I am going to have to do with History. Lol. Saxon is good, definitely recommend 👍

This curriculum has been such a major blessing for us and our son. He was struggling with ACE, which required a lot of help from my wife and I. We finally decided to try something different and went with Saxon. We bought this, along with the matching DIVE CD. Now, he has gotten caught up and is several weeks ahead in a little over 2 months! The lessons have problems that overlap with previous concepts, so that the student sees all the concepts multiple times to truly help them learn the material. My son actually enjoys math now, which is the biggest endorsement of all!

Saxon Math doesn't add in all the extra crap that Singapore math does. It breaks math down to basics, explains and demonstrates how you apply. I wish I had used this method with homeschooling from the start. It takes what has been learned, and builds upon it.

We are homeschoolers and have been using Saxon Math for four years. If you get this book, you will NOT need Algebra 1/2, as this book ends with all of the skill sets needed to go into Algebra 1. We never used the solutions manual, but everything else is necessary to teach and learn.

I homeschool my kids and have struggled to find a good math curriculum. This is it for me! I like how they lay everything out for me and the kids. We rarely have to search out another resource if there is confusion on a concept. Highly recommend for any level student.

My son's school uses this book. So helpful for me to have the set with the solutions that break down the steps. I then know how to approach the problems to help my son grasp the concepts needed to solve the math problems.

I really loved this book, and first read it cover to cover just for the info and the stories within it. But when I actually took it with me on an excursion to Brittany in April, it truly revealed its value to me. Because of the careful explanations, I was able to locate standing stones in the Carnac region that were located "in the wild" and could be explored and enjoyed at any time, without buying a ticket and worrying about closing hours. There are tons of little gems of wisdom and advice to help you get the maximum experience from your quest. Let me emphasize that this is not a traditional tourist book nor is it meant to be. It does not cover all of Brittany, and in fact misses much of the north. But the beauty is that it is focused on a specific region which the authors clearly know well, and the memories we have from using this book are priceless. I am very grateful to the authors for sharing their secret places so generously with the rest of us. Don't leave home without it!

Good book to read before visiting Brittany.

Elyn Aviva's writing is always clear, engaging and exciting. Her knowledge of and passion for mythology, iconography and history makes places and events come alive, and you are transported in time to the essence of place and people whose spirits continue to infuse and in-form. To not read "Powerful Places" guides when traveling to these locations is to miss out on a great deal of insight and connection. I highly recommend all her books!

While I had just quit reading Anthony Bourdain's Medium Raw — because it seemed to go no where except around his addictions, how he was treated by Food Network and his career choices — I was still interested in reading what he had to say about the woman found to carry typhoid even after surviving the illness. And in this, he proved more or less to be a talented and sympathetic writer. Yes, both of them were cooks and for poor, uneducated Mary, who probably never quite understood why her life became the way it did, this book has a gentle understanding quality to it. While we may never know her whole story — this book gives more depth to the woman who represented the turn-of-the-century poor, the immigrant classes, the uneducated who had to struggle daily to make a living. How harsh it must have been for her to be told she could have her freedom if she only disregarded her God-given talent of cooking because she would surely contaminate others. How sad to realize how quickly her life effectively ended.

I really enjoyed Anthony Bourdain's story of typhoid Mary. He presents a fascinating correlation between kitchen workers in the 1800's and today. Further he takes the history of cooks back to Roman times and the frustration of cooks being on the lowest end of the economic ladder while being the people who feed households. Doing an incredible amount of research, Bourdain combined the remnants he could find of Mary's story, which probably began in Ireland, the Irish potato famine, the background that provides plausible reasons for her recalcitrance with Doctors, medical history, the story of typhoid, modern sewage and more. Bourdain does not try to offer any answers. Instead, his curiosity leads us back to a different time, although not that long ago, the mindset and classicism of society, the Victorian age and the plight of the less than wealthy, particularly women. As a cook and a chef Bourdain provides an insight far different from the medical community or a standard biography. Bourdain ultimately paints a picture of Mary that is true to life, poignant, miserable, and sad. Mary's life was less than exemplary but Bourdain's description reveals a person named Mary, not the "typhoid Mary" she became. Bourdain concluded the story by finding Mary's grave and giving her a gift. Cook to cook.

Bordain dispelled the myth that Typhoid Mary infected thousands and killed hundreds in NYC around the turn of the 20th century. In fact, she may have infected less than 50 and of those only 3 died.Marry was a cook and a quite good one at that. She worked in fine homes for the newly wealthy families. She was also Irish, driven from her homeland by hunger in search of a better life. She was a hard worker and to be accused of infecting others was an affront to her pride. She was not sick!Bourdain explains what it means to be a cook and that some viewed others: customers, employers, the public with suspicion. So it was no small wonder that Mary resented all attempts to protect her and the public. She promised not to cook, but it was all she knew. She continued to cook and people continued to fall ill in her wake. Finally, the health department prevailed and hospitalized her for 23 years.Was this legal? In 1909, yes, now, I don't know. Typhoid is not a big problem in the U.S. in 2018.

Maybe I should give this book four stars, because while every single premise was developed extremely well, maybe a few were edited a little too much? I don't know. And maybe my respect for Anthony Bourdain not only as a Chef, but as a Writer makes it hard for me to give this book anything less than five stars. But I am confident in stating this: this take on Mary Mallon by Anthony Bourdain is as compelling as hell itself, and worth a read, even if in the end a decisive judgement of Mary Mallon remains tentatively open. Who among us is to judge? I enjoyed reading this from cover to cover. Period. It is interesting, fast, crisp, insightful, and relevant. Every single page. Great writing by a great writer.

I didn't care for the start. A lot of time was spent on how difficult it is to be a modern day cook: how tortured and unappreciated they all are. By the end, I got the point. There's not a wealth of information on Mary; it probably could have been surmised in a chapter or two. There are many flights of fancy and emotional flourishes, but by the end I'm convinced that the author sought to do Mary justice. It's a respectable work. I might not gift it, but I'll likely read it again.

A well researched historical narrative. Like most other people I thought Mary Mallon was responsible for infecting 1,000's of people, resulting in at least 100's of deaths. The truth was something different ~ 33 infected with 3 confirmed deaths. Certainly not enough for history to rename her Typhoid Mary. An excellent book by Anthony Bourdain adding yet another facet to this very talented man.

A non-fiction historical account about the life of Mary Mallon, Mr. Bourdain's perspective is unique in that it views Ms. Mallon's life not only from her perspective, somewhat, but also from the perspective of a professional cook. While his adherence to this perspective is not strict, his analysis is well researched and feels very complete.The story is engaging for the most part. The author's personal observations are entertaining and lively, however, a few of these side trips digress and detract. That said, I did come away educated not only about the life and circumstances of "Typhoid" Mary Mallon, but also about the times in which she lived.A brisk read, I recommend reading this at times of the day, or night, distant from meals, especially if you're dining out at unfamiliar establishments. As I read this account, I had in my mind a three star rating. Upon completing it, and in retrospect, I had learned a great deal of fascinating information and genuinely felt that I had gained something from the experience. Increasing one's knowledge is a worthy exercise and Mr. Bourdain's offering indeed accomplishes this.Well worth the short time it will take you to read.

I'd bet money this guy never got within 100 feet of any Alexa device. Most of these questions can't be answered by Alexa, a good chunk are pointless, disturbing, or just sad, and the bad English (or translation) makes for awkward reading. I got it for free but feel ripped off for what a waste of time it was.

The questions do not give insight into the potential of the tool. They seem trivia based and oriented to Parlor Tricks. In addition, the echo had no response to many of the questions. I was not impressed.

Basically a list of questions to ask Alexa , no explanation beyond sophomoric section titles like sad things to ask. Really. Full of graphical errors and misspellings. It looks like someone got a list of 1000 simple sentences, made some rudimentary punctuation and then added "Alexa" as the first word. How this increases efficiency is a mystery to me. Here is the 1001st thing to ask. Alexa, how can you call this a worthwhile?

If I could give this minus stars, I would. This is a list of questions you can ask Alexa, and most of them are replied to with "I'm sorry, I didn't understand the question I heard."Useless book, not worth the electrons streamed over the internet to download it.Scam for people who like their Alexa.

Brenden Fletcher and Babs Tarr's alternate future series remains a great read into its second volume. After the cliffhanger ending of the previous volume saw Domino speeding two years into the future (a la the Flash) the book picks up with her world turned upside down. The reigning champ of the motorcycling racing professional has denounced "crush" (the deadly drug that both superpowers cycles, but also mysteriously keeps Domino alive), her father has been roped into joining a drug busting gang of corrupt cyclist enforcers, and the love of her life has moved on with a new girlfriend. The series takes an intriguing turn with the time skip and thankfully we do get some great answers as to the nature of crush, Domino's origins, and the greater conspiracy going on within her world in this volume. As always the artwork by Tarr is one of the best aspects of the book; her character designs are tremendous and work wonderfully well with Fletcher's writing. So much more than a simple racing comic, Motor Crush is one of Image's best new indie titles and I'm excited for a third volume after this one's twist ending.

Tight story telling, art that really matches the futuristic racing tone, and a mystery that kept me very engaged. I was worried the cliff hanger in volume one wouldn't pay off but they've proved me wrong. If you liked Volume 1, you won't be disappointed

AHHHH SO GOOD. I adore the story, the art, the characters, the sapphic romance, the rush, the science fiction elements, the friendship... This series is fast paced, absorbing and delightful. I need more.

Awesome Series

In the last comic, Domino Swift, an up and coming motorcycle racer who was going up against Decimus Wexler during the day and racing illegal street races at night to win crush, this pink crystal that you put inside your motorcycle to make it run faster. When Dom loses her bike she turns to her old friend Lola for help and Lola reluctantly lets her use a bike she has and agrees to be her mechanic with Dom's dad. Lola has problems of her own. She owes lots of money to the producers who run things in Nova Honda. There's a mysterious man in black who knows more about Dom than she does like why she needs her inhaler and he wants to tell her more, but Dom wants nothing to do with him. When Dom is in an accident and her inhaler is empty she is desperate and decides to try the crush, which would kill a normal person, but with her, it heals her. Then Dom devises a plan to get them all out of the trouble they're in with the producers on race day but when someone forces a lot of crush down her throat during the race, she jumps up and runs off really fast and ends up far away.What Dom doesn't realize when she gets to where she is is that two years have passed and everyone believes she is dead. Decimus Wexler dropped out of that last race on moral grounds leaving a jerk named Clover to win it. When they came to collect on her wager they took over her dad's garage and turned it into a chop shop. The producers gave them a choice: Lola and her dad could work for them or they could die. Lola has moved on from Dom and has a girlfriend now named Bea who lives with her. Crush is now more illegal than ever and rigorously hunted down by enforcers who beat down anyone who has it. Dom's father is an enforcer. He blames the crush for his daughter's death.Dom needs crush desperately so she goes in search of Calex the head of the gang she used to race against for crush. He knew her as Cricket. There aren't many left of his gang but they're willing to break into the producer's facility that contains the crush because it will be worth it. Dom convinces Lola to help her. There is a surprise waiting inside for Dom. And the mysterious man in black reveals who he is and insists on having his say and showing her what he needs to whether she wants to know or not. This is such a fabulous series and the big reveal at the end of this volume will floor you. Dom is such a great character and I love Lola who's brilliant with anything mechanical and tells Dom what she really thinks. Calex is a fun character because he is always providing sarcastic comments. This book delves deeper into Dom's past and how it effects things today. I highly recommend this book.
